Real-Time Video Processing Of Arcing Events To Determine Coincidence, Jr Dennison, Gregory Wilson, Jonh Mojica Decena, Brian Wood

Posters

A system has been developed and tested for real-time monitoring of environmentally-induced electrostatic discharge events to test spacecraft component and material survivability. Simultaneous detection by several parallel methods in coincidence, enhances event detection, minimizes false signals, and collects complementary information to determine arc location, intensity, and timing. This research focuses on four computer-interfaced video cameras which provide spatial and temporal detection of visual arcing from the surface of various elements. A real time processing solution was developed which can calculate integrated intensities, sensitively detect intensity threshold events, and store relevant video frames from these threshold events. Post processing of this …

Reflection On Evolutionary Decision Making With Goal Modeling Via Empirical Studies, Alicia M. Grubb Oct 2018

Reflection On Evolutionary Decision Making With Goal Modeling Via Empirical Studies, Alicia M. Grubb

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Goal models have long been used in academia without wide spread adoption in industry. If the fundamental purpose of goal models is to allow stakeholders to generate scenarios and ask 'what if' questions, then which parts of the process of model construction, analysis, and evolution benefit from and which are hindered by manual activities? The recent expansion of goal modelling to ask time-based questions further amplifies this issue because significant additional information is required from stakeholders. Through a series of empirical studies, we aim to isolate the processes of model construction, analysis, and evolution for the purpose of studying the …

Application Of Image Recognition Technology To Foraminiferal Assemblage Analyses, Christian Helmut Gfatter Oct 2018

Application Of Image Recognition Technology To Foraminiferal Assemblage Analyses, Christian Helmut Gfatter

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Analyses of foraminiferal assemblages involve time consuming microscopic assessment of sediment samples. Image recognition software, which systematically matches features within sample images against an image library, is widely used in contexts ranging from law enforcement to medical research. At present, scientific applications such as identification of specimens in plankton samples utilize flow through systems in which samples are suspended in liquid and pass through a beam of light where the images are captured using transmitted light. Identification of foraminifers generally utilizes reflected light, because most shells are relatively opaque.

My goal was to design and test a protocol to directly …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

Rigorously quantifying the information in high-contrast imaging data is important for informing follow-up strategies to confirm the substellar nature of a point source, constraining theoretical models of planet–disk interactions, and deriving planet occurrence rates. However, within the exoplanet direct imaging community, non-detections have almost exclusively been defined using a frequentist detection threshold (i.e., contrast curve) and associated completeness. This can lead to conceptual inconsistencies when included in a Bayesian framework. A Bayesian upper limit is such that the true value of a parameter lies below this limit with a certain probability. The associated probability is the integral of the posterior …

Streaming Instability Of Multiple Particle Species In Protoplanetary Disks, Noemi Schaffer, Chao-Chin Yang, Anders Johansen Oct 2018

Streaming Instability Of Multiple Particle Species In Protoplanetary Disks, Noemi Schaffer, Chao-Chin Yang, Anders Johansen

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

The radial drift and diffusion of dust particles in protoplanetary disks affect both the opacity and temperature of such disks, as well as the location and timing of planetesimal formation. In this paper, we present results of numerical simulations of particle-gas dynamics in protoplanetary disks that include dust grains with various size distributions. We have considered three scenarios in terms of particle size ranges, one where the Stokes number τs = 10−1−100, one where τs = 10−4−10−1, and finally one where τs= 10−3−100. Moreover, we considered both discrete and continuous distributions in particle size. In accordance with previous works we …

Effects Of Usnic Acid On Hyperglycemia And Renal Function In Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats, Ripal P. Amin, Sanket N. Patel, Sunil Kumar, William S. Zito, Michael A. Barletta Oct 2018

Effects Of Usnic Acid On Hyperglycemia And Renal Function In Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats, Ripal P. Amin, Sanket N. Patel, Sunil Kumar, William S. Zito, Michael A. Barletta

Faculty Works: BCES (1999-2023)

Background: Diabetic hyperglycemia and glomerular hyper filtration play a causative role in the progression of chronic kidney disease. Renal glucose handling via Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter (SGLT)-2 is a targetable approach and SGLT-2 inhibitors have proven therapeutic benefits in diabetic kidney disease. Usnic Acid (UA) is an active constituent of lichen species and symbiotic organism of algae and fungi, which is variously studied in folk medicine. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the beneficial effects of UA on glucose homeostasis and renal function in streptozotocin-induced diabetic Sprague-Dawley rats and to determine whether UA has an effect on regulation of SGLT …

Cartan Triples, Allan P. Donsig, Adam H. Fuller, David R. Pitts Oct 2018

Cartan Triples, Allan P. Donsig, Adam H. Fuller, David R. Pitts

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We introduce the class of Cartan triples as a generalization of the notion of a Car- tan MASA in a von Neumann algebra. We obtain a one-to-one correspondence between Cartan triples and certain Clifford extensions of inverse semigroups. Moreover, there is a spectral theorem describing bimodules in terms of their support sets in the fundamental inverse semigroup and, as a corollary, an extension of Aoi’s theorem to this setting. This context contains that of Fulman’s generalization of Cartan MASAs and we discuss his generalization in an appendix.
