Long-Term Stability Of Ion-Beam Treated Space Polymers In Geo-Simulated Environment, J Kleiman, Z Iskanderova, C Best, Jr Dennison, Brian Wood

Presentations

It is a real challenge to reproduce various space environment conditions in ground-based facilities for testing of external space system materials and elements. This is due to the variety and complexity of the space environment conditions and their effects on materials and structures. The reliability of test results depends on accurate simulation of the critical factors and effects of the space environment for a particular mission. The main objectives of the simulation testing are to get the test results that are adequate to the material durability and functional behavior in a space environment.

As part of a large, multi-year program, …

Wood Waste And Race: The Industrialization Of Biomass Energy Technologies And Environmental Justice, Sarah Mittlefehldt Oct 2018

Wood Waste And Race: The Industrialization Of Biomass Energy Technologies And Environmental Justice, Sarah Mittlefehldt

Journal Articles

In the 1980s, engineers developed new ways to use one of humanity’s oldest fuel sources—wood—to create electrical power. This article uses envirotechnical analysis to examine the development of a wood-burning power plant in Flint, Michigan, and argues that when public officials began working with major energy corporations to build industrial biomass facilities in the 1980s and 1990s, new energy technologies designed to run on renewable fuels became part of an entrenched fossil fuel–based power structure that maintained deep historical inequalities. Like other examples of environmental injustice, the burdens of industrial-scale biomass power systems tended to fall on poor, nonwhite communities. …

The Code Mini-Map Visualisation: Encoding Conceptual Structures Within Source Code, Ivan Bacher, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher Oct 2018

The Code Mini-Map Visualisation: Encoding Conceptual Structures Within Source Code, Ivan Bacher, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher

Conference papers

Modern source code editors typically include a code mini-map visualisation, which provides programmers with an overview of the currently open source code document. This paper proposes to add a layering mechanism to the code mini- map visualisation in order to provide programmers with visual answers to questions related to conceptual structures that are not manifested directly in the code. Details regarding the design and implementation of this scope information layer, which displays additional encodings that correspond to the scope chain and information related to the scope chain within a source code document, is presented. The scope information layer can be …

Psychological Behavior Of English Learners Utilizing A Cognitive Tutor In An Online Pre-Calculus, Julian Viera Jr., Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The educational landscape is becoming a digital learning environment. Students in today's digital world draw from multiple sources of information; from hypertext, videos, social media, to video games and internet searches. English Learners, individuals learning two languages at once, who use software written in English have a passive relationship with the computer when software is not in their native language. They feel that this educational software belongs to another culture. This paper will present findings from a study with English Learners' engagement in a fully online pre-calculus course. The authors utilized Cultural-Historical Activity Theory to describe how English Learners' created …

All Maximally Complex Problems Allow Simplifying Divide-And-Conquer Approach: Intuitive Explanation Of A Somewhat Counterintuitive Ladner's Result, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 2018

All Maximally Complex Problems Allow Simplifying Divide-And-Conquer Approach: Intuitive Explanation Of A Somewhat Counterintuitive Ladner's Result, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Ladner's 1975 result says that any NP-complete problem -- i.e., in effect, any maximally complex problem -- can be reduced to solving two easier problems. This result sounds counter-intuitive: if a problem is maximally complex, how can it be reduced to simpler ones? In this paper, we provide an intuitive explanation for this result. Our main argument is that since complexity and easiness-to-divide are not perfectly correlated, it is natural to expect that maximally complex problem is not maximally difficult to divide. Our related argument is that -- as this result shows -- NP-completeness is a sufficient but not a …

Current research shows that digital games can significantly enhance children’s learning. The purpose of this study was to examine how design features in 12 digital math games influenced children’s learning. The participants in this study were 193 children in Grades 2 through 6 (ages 8-12). During clinical interviews, children in the study completed pre-tests, interacted with digital math games, responded to questions about the digital math games, and completed post-tests. We recorded the interactions using two video perspectives that recorded children’s gameplay and responses to interviewers. We employed mixed methods to analyze the data and identify salient patterns in children’s …

Superresolution Mapping Of Energy Landscape For Single Charge Carriers In Plastic Semiconductors, Yifei Jiang, Jason Mcneill Oct 2018

Superresolution Mapping Of Energy Landscape For Single Charge Carriers In Plastic Semiconductors, Yifei Jiang, Jason Mcneill

Publications

The performance of conjugated polymer devices is largely dictated by charge transport processes. However, it is difficult to obtain a clear relationship between conjugated polymer structures and charge transport properties, due to the complexity of the structure and the dispersive nature of charge transport in conjugated polymers. Here, we develop a method to map the energy landscape for charge transport in conjugated polymers based on simultaneous, correlated charge carrier tracking and single-particle fluorescence spectroscopy. In nanoparticles of the conjugated polymer poly[9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-1,4-benzo-{2,1′-3}-thiadiazole)], two dominant chain conformations were observed, a blue-emitting phase (λmax = 550 nm) and a …

Visualizing Extreme Precipitation For Climate Storytelling, Rachel Phinney Oct 2018

Visualizing Extreme Precipitation For Climate Storytelling, Rachel Phinney

Honors Theses

Precipitation can have adverse effects in the climate ecosystem. Too much can impose concerns such as flooding and landslides, resulting in damaged property, agricultural losses, and loss of life. Too little, and drought becomes an issue, inducing wildfires, poor air quality, agricultural losses, and health degradation. The contiguous United States has experienced an increase in precipitation since 1900, and much of this has occurred in the most recent decades. By the end of the 21st Century, it is expected that more winter and spring precipitation will occur over the northern portion of the U.S., and less in the southwest. While …

Imaging Spectroscopic Analysis Of Biochemical Traits For Shrub Species In Great Basin, Usa, Yi Qi, Susan L. Ustin, Nancy F. Glenn

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The biochemical traits of plant canopies are important predictors of photosynthetic capacity and nutrient cycling. However, remote sensing of biochemical traits in shrub species in dryland ecosystems has been limited mainly due to the sparse vegetation cover, manifold shrub structures, and complex light interaction between the land surface and canopy. In order to examine the performance of airborne imaging spectroscopy for retrieving biochemical traits in shrub species, we collected Airborne Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer—Next Generation (AVIRIS-NG) images and surveyed four foliar biochemical traits (leaf mass per area, water content, nitrogen content and carbon) of sagebrush (Artemesia tridentata) and …

Submarine Deep-Water Lava Flows At The Base Of The Western Galápagos Platform, Molly Anderson, V. Dorsey Wanless, Darin M. Schwartz, Emma Mccully, Daniel J. Fornari, Meghan R. Jones, S. Adam Soule

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

To investigate the initial phases of magmatism at the leading edge of the upwelling mantle plume, we mapped, photographed, and collected samples from two long, deep-water lava flows located at the western base of the Galápagos Platform using the remotely operated vehicle Hercules. Lavas were recovered from four areas on the seafloor west of Fernandina volcano, including the western flow fronts of two deep-water flows, heavily sedimented terrain between the two flows, and the eastern, shallower end of one flow. The sediment cover and morphologies are distinct between the western flow fronts and the eastern region based on seafloor …

Nested Scales Of Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Soil Water Content Across A Semiarid Montane Catchment, Kendra E. Kaiser, Brian L. Mcglynn Oct 2018

Nested Scales Of Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Soil Water Content Across A Semiarid Montane Catchment, Kendra E. Kaiser, Brian L. Mcglynn

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Topographic redistribution of water has been represented by various terrain metrics (e.g., topographic wetness index, slope, and upslope accumulated area). This type of landscape characterization has promoted the use of terrain metrics to inform how spatial patterns of soil volumetric water content (VWC) influence streamflow, ecological processes, and associated nutrient fluxes. However, evaluation of what these static terrain metrics reflect has only been accomplished in a few catchments. Additionally, previous research suggests that relationships between topographic metrics and VWC could be different across catchments through time. Here we measured VWC from snowmelt through summer drydown across a semiarid montane catchment. …

Strategic Players For Identifying Optimal Social Network Intervention Subjects, Miles Q. Ott, John M. Light, Melissa A. Clark, Nancy P. Barnett

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

We present a method whereby social network ties are used to identify behavioral leaders who are situated in the network such that these individuals are: 1) able to influence other individuals who are in need of and most receptive to intervention, thereby optimizing the impact of the intervention; and 2) not embedded with ties to individuals that are likely to be behaviorally antagonistic to the intervention or that would compromise the optimal impact of intervention. In this study we developed a method that we call Strategic Players, which is a solution for identifying a set of players who are close …

Small Shelly Fossil Preservation And The Role Of Early Diagenetic Redox In The Early Triassic, Sara B. Pruss, Nicholas J. Tosca, Courcelle Stark

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Minute fossils from a variety of different metazoan clades, collectively referred to as small shelly fossils, represent a distinctive taphonomic mode that is most commonly reported from the Cambrian Period. Lower Triassic successions of the western United States, deposited in the aftermath of the end-Permian mass extinction, provide an example of small shelly style preservation that significantly post-dates Cambrian occurrences. Glauconitized and phosphatized echinoderms and gastropods are preserved in the insoluble residues of carbonates from the Virgin Limestone Member of the Moenkopi Formation. Echinoderm plates, spines and other skeletal elements are preserved as stereomic molds; gastropods are preserved as steinkerns. …

Categorizing The Content Of Github Readme Files, Gede Artha Azriadi Prana, Christoph Treude, Ferdian Thung, Thushari Atapattu, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

README files play an essential role in shaping a developer’s first impression of a software repository and in documenting the software project that the repository hosts. Yet, we lack a systematic understanding of the content of a typical README file as well as tools that can process these files automatically. To close this gap, we conduct a qualitative study involving the manual annotation of 4,226 README file sections from 393 randomly sampled GitHub repositories and we design and evaluate a classifier and a set of features that can categorize these sections automatically. We find that information discussing the ‘What’ and …

Simknn: A Scalable Method For In-Memory Knn Search Over Moving Objects In Road Networks, Bin Cao, Chenyu Hou, Suifei Li, Jing Fan, Jianwei Yin, Baihua Zheng, Jie Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Nowadays, many location-based applications require the ability of querying k-nearest neighbors over a very large scale of5 moving objects in road networks, e.g., taxi-calling and ride-sharing services. Traditional grid index with equal-sized cells can not adapt6 to the skewed distribution of moving objects in real scenarios. Thus, to obtain the fast querying response time, the grid needs to be split7 into more smaller cells which introduces the side-effect of higher memory cost, i.e., maintaining such a large volume of cells requires a8 much larger memory space at the server side. In this paper, we present SIMkNN, a scalable and in-memory …

A Quantitative Study Of The Deployment Of The Sender Policy Framework, Eunice Zsu Tan Oct 2018

A Quantitative Study Of The Deployment Of The Sender Policy Framework, Eunice Zsu Tan

Theses and Dissertations

Email has become a standard form of communication between businesses. With the prevalent use of email as a form of communication between businesses and customers, phishing emails have emerged as a popular social engineering approach. With phishing, attackers trick users into divulging their personal information through email spoofing. Thus, it is imperative to verify the sender of an email. Anti-spoofing mechanisms such as the Sender Policy Framework (SPF) have been developed as the first line of defense against spoofing by validating the source of an email as well as the presenting options of how to handle emails that fail to …

Nonlinearities In The Real Exchange Rates: New Evidence From Developed And Developing Countries, Yamin S. Ahmad, Ming Chien Lo, Olena M. Staveley-O'Carroll

Economics Department Working Papers

This paper investigates nonlinearities in the dynamics of real exchange rates. We use Monte Carlo simulations to establish the size properties of the Teräsvirta-Anderson (1992) and the Teräsvirta (1994) test, when the dynamics of the real exchange rate is influenced by an exogenous process. In addition, we examine the modification proposed by Ahmad, Lo and Mykhaylova (2013; Journal of International Economics) to show that the modified nonlinearity test performs much better than the original in both Monte Carlo exercises and in the actual data on 1431 bilateral real exchange rate series. Finally, we investigate the dynamics of the real exchange …
