The Effects Of Density Gradients On The Distribution And Behavior Of Copepods, Connor Cayson
The Effects Of Density Gradients On The Distribution And Behavior Of Copepods, Connor Cayson
Theses
Observations of fine-scale behavioral dynamics of zooplankton may shed insight into much larger-scale ecosystem patterns and phenomena. Some zooplankton, such as copepods, are known to aggregate near density gradients; however, it is not clear the extent to which density gradients alone affect copepod distribution and behavior, since these gradients are often associated with phytoplankton layers. In this study, we investigated the behavior of Calanus pacificus in response to salinity gradients through laboratory experiments observed with high-resolution video and analyzed using computational techniques. Image data were collected using two cameras recording continuously for a duration of 30 minutes or more, allowing …

It is increasingly common for experiments in biology and medicine to involve large numbers of hypothesis tests. A natural graphical method for visualizing these tests is to construct a histogram from the p-values of these tests. In this article, we examine the shapes, both regular and irregular, that these histograms can take on, as well as present simple inferential procedures that help to interpret the shapes in terms of diagnosing potential problems with the experiment. We examine potential causes of these problems in detail, and discuss potential remedies. Throughout, examples of irregular-looking p-value histograms are provided and based …

On The Normalized Frb Luminosity Function, Rui Luo, Kejia Lee, Duncan R. Lorimer, Bing Zhang
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research
33 fast radio bursts (FRBs) had been detected by 2018 March. Although the sample size is still limited, meaningful statistical studies can already be carried out. The normalized luminosity function places important constraints on the intrinsic power output, sheds light on the origin(s) of FRBs, and can guide future observations. In this paper, we measure the normalized luminosity function of FRBs. Using Bayesian statistics, we can naturally account for a variety of factors such as receiver noise temperature, bandwidth, and source selection criteria. We can also include astronomical systematics, such as host galaxy dispersion measure, FRB local dispersion measure, galaxy …

Environmental Controls On Depositional Patterns Of Isolated Carbonate Platforms, Jeremy M. Kerr
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the influence of the environment on the lateral spatial patterning of facies in modern isolated carbonate platforms through six studies. The first study describes the creation of a database of benthic habitat and bathymetric maps derived from multispectral satellite imagery and the field data used calibrate and validate the mapping algorithms. The second study develops and assesses a new approach for remotely-deriving water depth from multispectral satellite imagery without the need for ground-truth information. The third study identifies a criterion for distinguishing between facies belts and mosaics and deploys the criterion to investigate the co-occurrence of these …

A variety of biological networks can bemodeled as logical or Boolean networks. However, a simplification of the reality to binary states of the nodes does not ease the difficulty of analyzing the dynamics of large, complex networks, such as signal transduction networks, due to the exponential dependence of the state space on the number of nodes. This paper considers a recently introduced method for finding a fairly small subnetwork, representing a collection of nodes that determine the states of most other nodes with a reasonable level of entropy. The subnetwork contains the most determinative nodes that yield the highest information …

Potable Water Reuse In Albuquerque, Nm: A Large Scale Community Survey To Understand Public Perceptions And The Impact Of Educational Materials On Acceptance, Lauren Nicole Distler
Architecture and Planning ETDs
In New Mexico and much of the American Southwest, ensuring clean, reliable, and sustainable drinking water supplies is one of the most significant planning challenges. One option to create more diverse and reliable water supplies is potable water reuse. There are two types of potable water reuse: indirect and direct potable reuse (IPR and DPR). Planned potable water reuse has not been widely implemented, largely due to negative public perceptions. This research involves the design and implementation of a large-scale survey administered to a sample of 4,000 water utility customers in Albuquerque, NM, to examine public acceptance of potable water …

We report a simple, rapid, and scalable strategy to fabricate surfaces exhibiting in-air superoleophobic/superhydrophilic wetting via sequential spray deposition and photopolymerization of nanoparticle-laden thiol–acrylate resins comprising both hydrophilic and oleophobic chemical constituents. The combination of spray deposition with nanoparticles provides hierarchical surface morphologies with both micro- and nanoscale roughness. Mapping the wetting behavior as a function of resin composition using high- and low-surface-tension liquid probes enabled facile identification of coatings that exhibit a range of wetting behavior, including superhydrophilic/superoleophilic, superhydrophobic/superoleophobic, and in-air superhydrophilic/superoleophobic wetting. In-air superhydrophilic/superoleophobic wetting was realized by a dynamic rearrangement of the interface to expose a greater …

The infrared dust emission from the white dwarf GD 56 is found to rise and fall by 20 per cent peak-to-peak over 11.2 yr, and is consistent with ongoing dust production and depletion. It is hypothesized that the dust is produced via collisions associated with an evolving dust disc, temporarily increasing the emitting surface of warm debris, and is subsequently destroyed or assimilated within a few years. The variations are consistent with debris that does not change temperature, indicating that dust is produced and depleted within a fixed range of orbital radii. Gas produced in collisions may rapidly re-condense onto …

Exploring The Chemistry Of Asymmetric Phosphines & Phosphinidene Sulfides, Taylor E. Pritchard
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The field of low-coordinate main group chemistry has seen huge development in the last 30 years, with novel compounds that demonstrate unique structures and reactivity. Isolation of these species has relied on thoughtfully designed substituents normally containing substructure steric bulk. The area of phosphinidene chalcogenide isolation and transfer remains poorly understood by comparison. In this context, the major focus of thesis was on the development of a room-temperature method for the transfer of RP=S moieties with and without sterically demanding substituents. The preparation and complete characterization of new asymmetric phosphines with m-terphenyl ligands was also reported. In Chapter 2, …

On The Convergence Of A Heuristic Parameter Choice Rule For Tikhonov Regularization, Mark Gockenbach, Elaheh Gorgin

Multiplicative regularization solves a linear inverse problem by minimizing the product of the norm of the data misfit and the norm of the solution. This technique is related to Tikhonov regularization with the parameter chosen to make the data misfit and regularization terms (of the Tikhonov objective function) equal. This suggests a heuristic parameter choice method, equivalent to the rule previously proposed by Reginska. Reginska's rule is well defined provided the data is sufficiently close to exact data and does not lie in the range of the operator. If a sufficiently large portion of the data error lies outside the …

Messenger RNA polyadenylation is a universal aspect of gene expression in eukaryotes. In well-established model organisms, this process is mediated by a conserved complex of 15–20 subunits. To better understand this process in apicomplexans, a group of unicellular parasites that causes serious disease in humans and livestock, a computational and high throughput sequencing study of the polyadenylation complex and poly(A) sites in several species was conducted. BLAST-based searches for orthologs of the human polyadenylation complex yielded clear matches to only two—poly(A) polymerase and CPSF73—of the 19 proteins used as queries in this analysis. As the human subunits that recognize the …

We recently inferred that the galaxy NGC 1052–DF2 has little or no dark matter and a rich system of unusual globular clusters. We assumed that the galaxy is a satellite of the luminous elliptical galaxy NGC 1052 at ≈20 Mpc, on the basis of its surface brightness fluctuations (SBFs) distance of 19.0 ± 1.7 Mpc, its radial velocity of ≈1800 km s−1, and its projected position. Here we analyze the color–magnitude diagram (CMD) of NGC 1052–DF2, following the suggestion by Trujillo et al. that the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) can be detected in currently available Hubble Space …

The atomic nucleus is one of the densest and most complex quantum-mechanical systems in nature. Nuclei account for nearly all the mass of the visible Universe. The properties of individual nucleons (protons and neutrons) in nuclei can be probed by scattering a high-energy particle from the nucleus and detecting this particle after it scatters, often also detecting an additional knocked-out proton. Analysis of electron- and proton-scattering experiments suggests that some nucleons in nuclei form close-proximity neutron–proton pairs with high nucleon momentum, greater than the nuclear Fermi momentum. However, how excess neutrons in neutron-rich nuclei form such close-proximity pairs remains unclear. …
