Chaos Firefly Algorithm With Self-Adaptation Mutation Mechanism For Solving Large-Scale Economic Dispatch With Valve-Point Effects And Multiple Fuel Options, Yude Yang, Bori Wei, Hui Liu, Yiyi Zhang, Junhui Zhao, Emad Manla

Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

This paper presents a new metaheuristic optimization algorithm, the firefly algorithm (FA), and an enhanced version of it, called chaos mutation FA (CMFA), for solving power economic dispatch problems while considering various power constraints, such as valve-point effects, ramp rate limits, prohibited operating zones, and multiple generator fuel options. The algorithm is enhanced by adding a new mutation strategy using self-adaptation parameter selection while replacing the parameters with fixed values. The proposed algorithm is also enhanced by a self-adaptation mechanism that avoids challenges associated with tuning the algorithm parameters directed against characteristics of the optimization problem to be solved. The …

Nitrogen Cycling During A Period Of Environmental Change, Kaizad Patel Aug 2018

Nitrogen Cycling During A Period Of Environmental Change, Kaizad Patel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Natural and anthropogenic disturbances have altered the N cycle on the regional to global scale. Although numerous studies have examined the effects of chronic atmospheric N deposition on ecosystem processes, less is known about intra-annual variability of these processes, or how these responses might be altered under conditions of changing climate. The work described in this dissertation focuses on the effects of a changing chemical and physical climate, particularly terrestrial N processes (a) during Maine’s changing winters, and (b) in response to chronic elevated N additions.

Subnivean winter soil processes were examined at the Dwight B. DeMerritt Forest (DBDF) and …

Retreat Of The Antarctic Ice Sheet In The Southern Ross Embayment From Records At Amundsen And Liv Glaciers, Southern Transantarctic Mountains, Jillian Pelto Aug 2018

Retreat Of The Antarctic Ice Sheet In The Southern Ross Embayment From Records At Amundsen And Liv Glaciers, Southern Transantarctic Mountains, Jillian Pelto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Antarctic Ice Sheet contains ~58 m of global sea-level equivalent and thus its future behavior under global warming is of pressing concern. Examination of past ice-sheet behavior during periods of warming climate can afford insight useful for predicting future sea-level rise. This study focuses on a major unanswered question - namely, the cause of Antarctic Ice Sheet retreat following the last glaciation. Documenting the timing and nature of this deglaciation is crucial to understand the mechanisms behind ice-sheet behavior. Here, I examine how the marine portions of the ice sheet responded to the major warming that occurred at the …

Towards An Efficient, Scalable Stream Query Operator Framework For Representing And Analyzing Continuous Fields, John Whittier Aug 2018

Towards An Efficient, Scalable Stream Query Operator Framework For Representing And Analyzing Continuous Fields, John Whittier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Advancements in sensor technology have made it less expensive to deploy massive numbers of sensors to observe continuous geographic phenomena at high sample rates and stream live sensor observations. This fact has raised new challenges since sensor streams have pushed the limits of traditional geo-sensor data management technology. Data Stream Engines (DSEs) provide facilities for near real-time processing of streams, however, algorithms supporting representing and analyzing Spatio-Temporal (ST) phenomena are limited.

This dissertation investigates near real-time representation and analysis of continuous ST phenomena, observed by large numbers of mobile, asynchronously sampling sensors, using a DSE and proposes two novel stream …

Three-Dimensional Hybrid Simulation Of Viscous-Like Processes At Saturn's Magnetosphere Boundary, P. A. Delamere, B. Burkholder, X. Ma Aug 2018

Three-Dimensional Hybrid Simulation Of Viscous-Like Processes At Saturn's Magnetosphere Boundary, P. A. Delamere, B. Burkholder, X. Ma

Publications

Saturn's magnetosheath flows exhibit significant dawn/dusk asymmetry. The dawnside flows are reduced from expectation, suggesting significant momentum transport through the magnetopause boundary where the flow shear is maximized. It has been suggested that the solar wind interaction with the giant magnetospheres is, in fact, dominated by a viscous‐like interaction governed by the Kelvin‐Helmholtz instability. In three dimensions, the Kelvin‐Helmholtz instability can generate small‐scale and intermittent magnetic reconnection due, in part, to a twisted magnetic field topology. The net result is a field line threading of the magnetopause boundary and the generation of Maxwell shear stresses. Here we present three‐dimensional hybrid …

Remarks On Legendrian Self-Linking, Chris Beasley, Brendan Mclellan, Ruoran Zhang Aug 2018

Remarks On Legendrian Self-Linking, Chris Beasley, Brendan Mclellan, Ruoran Zhang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The Thurston-Bennequin invariant provides one notion of self-linking for any homologically-trivial Legendrian curve in a contact three-manifold. Here we discuss related analytic notions of self-linking for Legendrian knots in R3. Our definition is based upon reformulation of the elementary Gauss linking integral and is motivated by ideas from supersymmetric gauge theory. We recover the Thurston-Bennequin invariant as a special case.

Invasive-Plant-Removal Frequency—Its Impact On Species Spread And Implications For Further Integration Of Forest-Management Practices, Bernabas Wolde, Pankaj Lal Aug 2018

Invasive-Plant-Removal Frequency—Its Impact On Species Spread And Implications For Further Integration Of Forest-Management Practices, Bernabas Wolde, Pankaj Lal

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

For a given invasive plant species and control method, effective invasive plant eradication requires regular monitoring and management. While most previous studies characterize invasive plant species, develop appropriate control methods, or prioritize species for management using aggressiveness and other considerations, few study why some forestland owners are less likely than others to regularly remove invasive plant species. Such information is useful in prioritizing and targeting forestland owners who are at greater risk for invasion, with the stands threatening adjacent forestlands. Towards this end, we surveyed 1800 forestland owners in Virginia and Texas. We use data on forestland owners’ socioeconomics and …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

(‒)-Sparteine (1) and (–)-(α)-isosparteine (2) are members of the lupine alkaloid family.[1-2] Sparteine has found extensive use in asymmetric organic transformations, including lithiations[3] and Pd-catalyzed oxidations.[4-7] (α)-Isosparteine, which can be made from sparteine, has been utilized as a chiral ligand for a limited number of stereoselective reactions.[8-9] The two compounds differ in that 1 displays an exo-endo arrangement of the bridgehead hydrogens at C-11 and C-6, respectively, while 2 retains an exo-exo arrangement of these atoms (Figure 1). This study is focused on assigning 1H chemical shifts and coupling constants and 13C chemical shifts for N-methyl …

Three Examples Of Mondoromy Groups, Alice A. Wise

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis illustrates the notion of the Monodromy group of a global analytic function through three examples. One is a relatively simple finite example; the others are more complicated infinite cases, one abelian and one non-abelian, which show connections to other parts of mathematics.

Principles And Guidelines For Advancement Of Touchscreen-Based Non-Visual Access To 2d Spatial Information, Hari Prasath Palani Aug 2018

Principles And Guidelines For Advancement Of Touchscreen-Based Non-Visual Access To 2d Spatial Information, Hari Prasath Palani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Graphical materials such as graphs and maps are often inaccessible to millions of blind and visually-impaired (BVI) people, which negatively impacts their educational prospects, ability to travel, and vocational opportunities. To address this longstanding issue, a three-phase research program was conducted that builds on and extends previous work establishing touchscreen-based haptic cuing as a viable alternative for conveying digital graphics to BVI users. Although promising, this approach poses unique challenges that can only be addressed by schematizing the underlying graphical information based on perceptual and spatio-cognitive characteristics pertinent to touchscreen-based haptic access. Towards this end, this dissertation empirically identified a …

Semi-Transparent Energy-Harvesting Solar Concentrator Windows Employing Infrared Transmission-Enhanced Glass And Large-Area Microstructured Diffractive Elements, Mikhail Vasiliev, Kamal Alameh, Mohsin Ali Badshah, Seok-Min Kim, Mohammad Nur-E-Alam

Mikhail Vasiliev

We report on the study of energy-harvesting performance in medium-size (400 cm2)
glass-based semitransparent solar concentrators employing edge-mounted photovoltaic modules.
Systems using several different types of glazing system architecture and containing embedded
diffractive structures are prepared and characterized. The technological approaches to the rapid
manufacture of large-area diffractive elements suitable for use in solar window-type concentrators
are described. These elements enable the internal deflection and partial trapping of light inside
glass-based concentrator windows. We focus on uncovering the potential of pattern-transfer
polymer-based soft lithography for enabling both the improved photon collection probability at solar
cell surfaces, and the up-scaling of …

Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of Novel Protease-Activated Receptor 2 (Par2)-Targeting Imaging Agents For Cancer, Jordan C. Lesarge Aug 2018

Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of Novel Protease-Activated Receptor 2 (Par2)-Targeting Imaging Agents For Cancer, Jordan C. Lesarge

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Aberrant function and over-expression of protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR2), a GPCR, is associated with various cancers and inflammatory diseases. PAR2-targeting ligands have been developed with therapeutic applications but the development of imaging probes is lacking. A series of PAR2-targeted fluorescent and 18F-PET imaging agents were synthesized and assessed for PAR2-binding. A novel dye-conjugated peptide, Isox-Cha-Chg-ARK(Sulfo-Cy5)-NH2 (EC50=16nM, KD=38nM), showed >10-fold increase in potency and binding affinity for PAR2 compared to the leading known fluorescent probe. A novel PET imaging 18F-labeled peptide, Isox-Cha-Chg-AR-Dpr([18F]4-FB)-NH2, is the first PAR2-targeted in vivo imaging agent. …

Ureilite Meteorite Record Of Shock Metamorphism And Parent Body Processes, Yaozhu Li Aug 2018

Ureilite Meteorite Record Of Shock Metamorphism And Parent Body Processes, Yaozhu Li

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Ureilites are an abundant non-chondritic meteorite class that are petrographically similar to terrestrial ultramafic rocks, consisting mostly of coarse-grained olivine and pyroxene, with remarkably low occurrence of plagioclase feldspar. This work examines a suite of ureilites (six monomict ureilites and one polymict ureilite), primarily focusing on the mineral olivine as a recorder of shock damage. Optical petrography and Raman spectroscopy provide context information, and in-situmicro-X-ray diffraction (𝜇XRD) is used to obtain quantitative measurements of diffraction peak Full-Width-Half Maxima upon integration along the chi direction on 2D XRD patterns. Ureilites show an increasing streak length of FWHMχ and asterism (discrete …

Rigid Linkages And Partial Zero Forcing, Daniella Ferrero, Mary Flagg, H. Tracy Hall, Leslie Hogben, Jephian C.-H. Lin, Seth A. Meyer, Shahla Nasserasr, Bryan Shader

Mathematics Faculty Articles

Connections between vital linkages and zero forcing are established. Specifically, the notion of a rigid linkage is introduced as a special kind of unique linkage and it is shown that spanning forcing paths of a zero forcing process form a spanning rigid linkage and thus a vital linkage. A related generalization of zero forcing that produces a rigid linkage via a coloring process is developed. One of the motivations for introducing zero forcing is to provide an upper bound on the maximum multiplicity of an eigenvalue among the real symmetric matrices described by a graph. Rigid linkages and a related …
