Astromimetics: The Dawn Of A New Era For (Bio)Materials Science?, Vuk Uskoković, Victoria M. Wu

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Composite, multifunctional fine particles are likely to be at the frontier of materials science in the foreseeable future. Here we present a submicron composite particle that mimics the stratified structure of the Earth by having a zero-valent iron core, a silicate/silicide mantle, and a thin carbonaceous crust resembling the biosphere and its biotic deposits. Particles were formulated in a stable colloidal form and made to interact with various types of healthy and cancer cells in vitro. A selective anticancer activity was observed, promising from the point of view of the intended use of the particles for tumor targeting across the …

Burning Man’S Mathematical Underbelly, Seth S. Cottrell

Publications and Research

A math degree can take you to a lot of places, both physically and figuratively, and if you play your cards right, you too can argue counterfactual definiteness with a shaman. First in 2008, and several times since, a fellow math PhD and I traveled to the Burning Man art festival to sit in the desert and talk with the locals about whatever they happened to be curious about.

The decay τ−→K−KSντ has been studied using 430 × 106 e+e− → τ+τ events produced at a center-of-mass energy around 10.6 GeV at the PEP-II collider and studied with the BABAR detector. The mass spectrum of the K−KS system has been measured and the spectral function has been obtained. The measured branching fraction B(τ− → K−KSντ) =(0.739 ± 0.011(stat) ± 0.020(syst)) × 10−3 is found to be in agreement with earlier measurements.

Discrete Information Object Analysis Of Primary Flight Display Clutter, Kenneth Ward Aug 2018

Discrete Information Object Analysis Of Primary Flight Display Clutter, Kenneth Ward

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Modern aircraft utilize digital display screens to provide critical flight and system status information to pilots. As computing power has increased, the number of data sources and information presented has also increased, with the goal of increasing situational awareness. However, the display can become cluttered with extraneous or irrelevant information, to the detriment of pilot cognitive workload. Pilot perceptions of clutter vary with flight experience, introducing unique considerations in the flight training environment, given the experience difference between instructors and students. Researchers have studied the problem, identifying both the number of visual objects and information density as predictors of perception …

Observation Of A Link Between Energy Dissipation Rate And Oscillation Frequency Of The Large-Scale Circulation In Dry And Moist Rayleigh-Bénard Turbulence, Dennis Niedermeier, Kelken Chang, Will Cantrell, Kamal Kant Chandrakar, David Ciochetto, Raymond Shaw Aug 2018

Observation Of A Link Between Energy Dissipation Rate And Oscillation Frequency Of The Large-Scale Circulation In Dry And Moist Rayleigh-Bénard Turbulence, Dennis Niedermeier, Kelken Chang, Will Cantrell, Kamal Kant Chandrakar, David Ciochetto, Raymond Shaw

Department of Physics Publications

In this study both the small- and large-scale flow properties of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection are investigated. Experiments are carried out using the Π chamber (aspect ratio Γ=2) for Rayleigh number range Ra∼108–109 and Prandtl number Pr≈0.7. Furthermore, experiments are run for dry and wet conditions, i.e., top and bottom surfaces of the chamber are dry and wet, respectively. For wet conditions we further distinguish between conditions with and without the presence of sodium chloride aerosol particles which, if supersaturated conditions are achieved, lead to cloud droplet formation. We therefore refer to these conditions as moist and cloudy, …

Dualities, Topological Properties, And Degeneracies Of Classical And Quantum Lattice Models, Seyyed Mohammad Sadegh Vaezi Aug 2018

Dualities, Topological Properties, And Degeneracies Of Classical And Quantum Lattice Models, Seyyed Mohammad Sadegh Vaezi

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We study various nontrivial facets of Ҥegeneracyӭ a concept of paramount importance in numerous physical systems.

In the first part of this thesis, we challenge the folklore that if the ground state degeneracy of a physical system depends on topology then this system must necessarily realize an unconventional, so-called Ҵopological quantumӬ order. To this end, we introduce a classical rendition of the Toric Code model that displays such a topological degeneracy yet exhibits conventional Landau order. As the ground states of this classical system may be distinguished by local measurements, this example illustrates that, on its own, topological degeneracy is …

Spectral And Stratigraphic Mapping Of Layered Sulfate Deposits On Mars Using Advanced Crism Data Processing Techniques, Kathryn Elizabeth Powell Aug 2018

Spectral And Stratigraphic Mapping Of Layered Sulfate Deposits On Mars Using Advanced Crism Data Processing Techniques, Kathryn Elizabeth Powell

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We apply orbital remote sensing of Mars to analyze the mineralogy and geologic setting of two areas near rover landing sites. We use the Compact Reconnaissance Orbiter for Mars (CRISM) observations, modeled to single scattering albedo, to identify and map hydrated sulfates in layered sedimentary sequences in these two locations. In Meridiani Planum, the Opportunity rover has characterized a ~10 m section of sulfate-bearing deposits known as the Burns formation. At our study area in ~20 km to the south at Iazu Crater, we found that the crater walls have strong spectral signatures of polyhydrated sulfate, strongly correlated with a …

Global Dynamics Of A Mutualism–Competition Model With One Resource And Multiple Consumers, Yuanshi Wang, Hong Wu, Donald L. Deangelis Aug 2018

Global Dynamics Of A Mutualism–Competition Model With One Resource And Multiple Consumers, Yuanshi Wang, Hong Wu, Donald L. Deangelis

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Recent simulation modeling has shown that species can coevolve toward clusters of coexisting consumers exploiting the same limiting resource or resources, with nearly identical ratios of coefficients related to growth and mortality. This paper provides a mathematical basis for such as situation; a full analysis of the global dynamics of a new model for such a class of n-dimensional consumer–resource system, in which a set of consumers with identical growth to mortality ratios compete for the same resource and in which each consumer is mutualistic with the resource. First, we study the system of one resource and two consumers. …

Enthymemathical Proofs And Canonical Proofs In Euclid’S Plane Geometry, Abel Lassalle, Marco Panza

MPP Published Research

Since the application of Postulate I.2 in Euclid’s Elements is not uniform, one could wonder in what way should it be applied in Euclid’s plane geometry. Besides legitimizing questions like this from the perspective of a philosophy of mathematical practice, we sketch a general perspective of conceptual analysis of mathematical texts, which involves an extended notion of mathematical theory as system of authorizations, and an audience-dependent notion of proof.

A Harmonic Solution For Two-Dimensional Adjoint Qcd, Uwe Trittmann Aug 2018

A Harmonic Solution For Two-Dimensional Adjoint Qcd, Uwe Trittmann

Physics Faculty Scholarship

Two-dimensional QCD with adjoint fermions has many attractive features, yet its single-particle content remains largely unknown. To lay the foundation for a crucially improved approximation of the theory’s spectrum, we developed a method to find the basis of eigenstates using the symmetry structure of the asymptotic theory where pair production is disallowed. This method produces complete sets of multidimensional harmonic functions for the massless and the massive theory. Previously only part of such a basis was known. The method presented here should be applicable to other theories and has the promise of factoring out the long-range Coulomb-type part of interactions. …

Preventing Extinction Of At-Risk Plant Species In A Complex World, Holly Lee Bernardo Aug 2018

Preventing Extinction Of At-Risk Plant Species In A Complex World, Holly Lee Bernardo

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Earthճ current biodiversity crisis is now considered a true mass extinction event, with species level extinction rates well above background rates and population level extinction rates orders of magnitude more common that species extinctions. There are many threats driving this loss of biodiversity. How each threat impacts the viability of a species is highly context dependent, but all are anthropogenic in origin and so as the human population continues to increase, so too will the pressure of these threats on our natural systems. Ultimately, how much a threat decreases the viability of a species depends on how that threat influences …

A Distributed Semi-Supervised Platform For Dnase-Seq Data Analytics Using Deep Generative Convolutional Networks, Shayan Shams, Richard Platania, Joohyun Kim, Jian Zhang, Kisung Lee, Seungwon Yang, Seung Jong Park

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

A deep learning approach for analyzing DNase-seq datasets is presented, which has promising potentials for unraveling biological underpinnings on transcription regulation mechanisms. Further understanding of these mechanisms can lead to important advances in life sciences in general and drug, biomarker discovery, and cancer research in particular. Motivated by recent remarkable advances in the field of deep learning, we developed a platform, Deep Semi-Supervised DNase-seq Analytics (DSSDA). Primarily empowered by deep generative Convolutional Networks (ConvNets), the most notable aspect is the capability of semi-supervised learning, which is highly beneficial for common biological settings often plagued with a less sufficient number of …

Development And Application Of Hybrid Wray-Agarwal Turbulence Model And Large-Eddy Simulation, Xu Han Aug 2018

Development And Application Of Hybrid Wray-Agarwal Turbulence Model And Large-Eddy Simulation, Xu Han

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Rapid development in computing power in past five decades along with the development and progress in building blocks of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technology has made CFD an indispensable tool for modern engineering analysis and design of fluid-based products and systems. For CFD analysis, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are currently the most widely used fluid equations in the industry. RANS methods require modeling of turbulence effect (i.e. turbulence modeling) based on empirical relations and therefore often produce low accuracy results for many flows. In recent years, the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) approach has been developed which has shown promise of …

Robust Engineering Of Dynamic Structures In Complex Networks, Walter Botongo Bomela Aug 2018

Robust Engineering Of Dynamic Structures In Complex Networks, Walter Botongo Bomela

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Populations of nearly identical dynamical systems are ubiquitous in natural and engineered systems, in which each unit plays a crucial role in determining the functioning of the ensemble. Robust and optimal control of such large collections of dynamical units remains a grand challenge, especially, when these units interact and form a complex network. Motivated by compelling practical problems in power systems, neural engineering and quantum control, where individual units often have to work in tandem to achieve a desired dynamic behavior, e.g., maintaining synchronization of generators in a power grid or conveying information in a neuronal network; in this dissertation, …
