Triplett Creek is a tributary of the Licking River. It runs through Morehead, KY, where we are conducting our research.

The creek was modified in the 1970s but construction was halted before the project was complete. Unfortunately, the result was an increase in overflow and subsequent riverbank erosion. The city installed sediment trap rocks in hopes of slowing down the water and decreasing erosion. We are using drones and photogrammetric software to map the area and compare images of the river to determine erosion rates. The downtown center of Lafayette, Indiana is situated in a food desert where access to healthy, nutritious food can be limited. Urban gardens are an effective way to increase access to healthy alternatives while also providing a number of benefits to the surrounding area, including opportunities for community growth, education, and physical activity. In summer 2016, researchers from Purdue University collaborated with Lafayette’s GrowLocal Urban Gardens Network (GrowLocal) to perform a baseline analysis of the current community gardening initiatives, and explore the possibilities for expansion, development, and future community involvement through urban gardening.

Purdue provides many activities in service-learning each year, and though they are varied experiences, many of the same lessons can be learned. I had the opportunity to participate in two service-learning study abroad trips while at Purdue- the first to Spain and Morocco, and the second to Haiti. While on these trips, I was involved in projects that seemed very different. In Morocco, my group taught high school students about the history of mathematics during the Islamic Golden Age and how mathematics is utilized in Purdue research. In this article, the author discusses his experiences in service-oriented engineering developing an interactive weather station for DCES students. Day details this process and the lessons learned over the course of the project development, as well as the project’s influence on his aspirations for a career in civil and environmental engineering. To provide substantive takeaways from the project, he concludes by reviewing the benefits of interactive STEM learning spaces in the instructional environment and links them to the impacts of the weather station project on the community.

We present new CCD photometric light curves about two eclipsing binaries of V582 Lyr and V1016 Oph. Our observations were carried out by the SARA 91.4 cm telescope of America in 2016 and the 60 cm telescope of Chile in 2018. V582 Lyr’s spectra type was classified as K5, and its radial velocity was determined using the LAMOST spectral survey. There are absorptions in the observed Hα line and excess emissions in the subtracted Hα line, which show weak chromospheric activity. We obtained the updated ephemeris information for V582 Lr and V1016 Oph, and found that their orbital periods are …

Historically, Rio Grande wild turkeys in south central Texas have been at lower densities than other portions of the state. Within the Oak-Prairie Wildlife District of Texas, Rio Grande wild turkey regulatory restrictions are different for counties in the eastern and western portions of the ecoregion. Due to perceived increases in turkey density in the eastern portion of the ecoregion (hereafter 1-bird zone), Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) considered increasing the bag limit to match counties in the western portion of the district (hereafter 4-bird zone) in order to increase hunting opportunities.   1. Reef fishes are an important component of marine biodiversity, and changes in the composition of the assemblage structure may indicate ecological, climatic, or anthropogenic disturbances. To examine spatial differences in the reef fish assemblage structure around Easter Island, eight sites were sampled during autumn and summer 2016–2017 with baited remote underwater video systems.

Ultrafast and nonlinear spectroscopies are used to study excited-state dynamics and monitor real-time growth dynamics of different types of nanomaterials. In the first study, the growth dynamics of colloidal gold-silver core-shell nanoparticles are studied using in situ second harmonic generation and extinction spectroscopy. The growth lifetimes are studied under different reaction conditions, resulting in different silver shell thicknesses, with spectral comparisons to finite-difference time-domain calculations. The results are consistent with a three-step growth process. During the first step of the nanoparticle growth reaction, rough and uneven surfaces are formed rapidly giving rise to plasmonic hot spots with corresponding broad, red-shifted …

The Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey has morphologically identified a class of 'Little Blue Spheroid' (LBS) galaxies whose relationship to other classes of galaxies we now examine in detail. Considering a sample of 868 LBSs, we find that such galaxies display similar but not identical colours, specific star formation rates, stellar population ages, massto- light ratios, and metallicities to Sd-Irr galaxies. We also find that LBSs typically occupy environments of even lower density than those of Sd-Irr galaxies, where ∼65 per cent of LBS galaxies live in isolation. We report on the development of several di#11;erent thin-film functional material systems
prepared by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering at Edith Cowan University nanofabrication
labs. While focusing on the RF sputtering process optimizations for new or the previously
underexplored material compositions and multilayer structures, we disclose several unforeseen
material properties and behaviours. Among these are an unconventional magnetic hysteresis loop
with an intermediate saturation state observed in garnet trilayers, and an ultrasensitive magnetic
switching behaviour in garnet-oxide composites (GOC).We also report on the unusually high thermal

When deciding about surgical treatment options, an important aspect of the decision-making process is the potential risk of complications. A risk assessment performed by a spinal surgeon is based on their knowledge of the best available evidence and on their own clinical experience. The objective of this work is to demonstrate the differences in the way spine surgeons perceive the importance of attributes used to calculate risk of post-operative and quantify the differences by building individual formal models of risk perceptions. Overly conservative estimates of breakdown strength can increase the mass and cost of spacecraft electrostatic discharge (ESD) mitigation methods. Improved estimates of ESD likelihood in the space environment require better models of ESD distributions. The purpose of this work is to evaluate our previously proposed dual-defect model of voltage step-up-to-breakdown tests with a case study across four dielectric materials. We predicted that materials best fit by mixed Weibull distributions would exhibit better fits with the dual-defect model compared to a mean field single defect theory. Environmental contamination can negatively impact fish populations. In addition to acute toxicity leading to death, toxicants can reduce fish growth and lower reproduction. The potential for adverse population level effects of environmental contaminants are estimated to conduct risk assessments from laboratory toxicity tests that most often measure apical endpoints related to growth, survival and reproduction. The relationships between these effect endpoints are being evaluated to predict shifts in fish population demography better after exposure to environmental toxicants. The work disclosed in this dissertation outlines novel reactions involving indoles and their applications towards the total synthesis of natural products, tronocarpine and dippinine B.

Showcased in Chapter 2 is a novel mode of activation for donor-acceptor cyclopropanes via an external hydrogen bond. The hydrogen bond increases the cyclopropane’s electrophilicity permitting indole nucleophiles to open the ring. The result is 3-postion functionalized indoles.

An external hydrogen-bond donor, HFIP (1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropanol), is used as a solvent to provide the medium necessary for favourable hydrogen-bond interaction with donor-acceptor cyclopropanes. Our undergraduate research group has long focused on the preparation and investigation of electron-deficient analogs of the perimidinespirohexadienone (PSHD) family of photochromic molecular switches for potential application as "photochromic photooxidants" for gating sensitivity to photoinduced charge transfer. We previously reported the photochemistry of two closely related and more reducible quinazolinespirohexadienones (QSHDs), wherein the naphthalene of the PSHD is replaced with a quinoline. In the present work, we report our investigation of the electrochemistry of these asymmetric QSHDs. The Nebraska odonate list has 109 species in two suborders, damselflies (Zygoptera) with 47 species and dragonflies (Anisoptera) with 62 species. Nebraska had been very poorly surveyed prior to 2005 and 63 counties had fewer than 10 records. By 2017 the number of county records had nearly quadrupled, to over 3000 records, the average county total had increased from 9 to 33 and all counties had at least 21 records. Nineteenth-century students of Charles Bessey at the University of Nebraska, Frederic Clements and Edith Schwartz received doctorates in botany, married, and went on to become founders of the discipline of plant ecology. They tested and taught their theory of plant succession, known as Clementsian ecology, for nearly four decades at their Alpine laboratory in Colorado. Their leadership and influence at the Carnegie Institution was world-wide and attracted followers from several other disciplines. We attempted to disentangle the interacting factors of life history phase (five categories) and rate of desiccation (time allotted for induction of desiccation tolerance) for 13 ecotypes of B. argenteum. Using chlorophyll fluorescence as a stress index, we determined how these parameters influenced desiccation tolerance. Rate of drying and life phase significantly affected desiccation tolerance. Sediment transport and deposition in marginal seas is jointly controlled by many factors including hydrodynamics, fluvial inputs, and the characteristics of sediment particles. This dissertation study employs the coupled ocean-atmosphere-wave-and-sediment transport modeling system (COAWST) to investigate the mechanism of sediment transport in the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGoM) on different temporal scales, as well as its interaction with biogeochemical processes.

First of all, a three-way coupled (atmosphere-wave-ocean) hurricane model reproduced the hydro- and sediment dynamics during hurricane Gustav (2008).
