Seeing With A Climate Lens, Jane Ganion

Year on Climate Change: Events

Join Jana Ganion from the Blue Lake Rancheria and Kit Batten, an independent climate change consultant previously at Pacific Gas & Electric to talk about a zero-emission future and your role in it. We will discuss insights and lessons learned from the clean energy and sustainability field through our work to shape a grid of the future. If you don’t yet know exactly what you want to do or you are have been working in these fields for decades, join us to talk about sustainability, electrical grids, climate, international diplomacy, the future, and you.

Tio2/S-Doped Carbons Hybrids: Analysis Of Their Interfacial And Surface Features, Teresa Bandosz, Alfonso Policicchio, Marc Florent, Po S. Poon, Juan Matos

Publications and Research

Hybrids containing approximately equal amounts of P25 TiO2 and S-doped porous carbons were prepared using a water-based slurry mixing method. The materials were extensively characterized by adsorption of nitrogen, potentiometric titration, thermal analysis in air and in helium, XRD, XPS and SEM. The collected results showed the significant blockage of carbon micropores by TiO2 particles deposited on their outer surface. The formation of a new interface, especially for the S-rich samples, might also contribute to the porosity alteration. Analysis of surface chemistry suggested the presence of Ti-S bonds with an involvement of sulfur from thiophenic species in the carbon phase. …

Using Slow-Fast Dynamical Systems To Understand Regime Shifts In Ecology, Ting-Hao Hsu Oct 2019

Using Slow-Fast Dynamical Systems To Understand Regime Shifts In Ecology, Ting-Hao Hsu

Mathematics Colloquium Series

In ecology, regime shifts are continual rapid change between different long-lasting dynamics. For instance, rapid evolutionary changes have been observed in a wide variety of organisms, both in predators and in prey. Another example is disease outbreak, where a system exhibits qualitative changes after long periods of apparent quiescence. Using the theory of slow-fast dynamics, for systems of differential equations with sufficiently large separation of time scales we derive conditions under which regime shifts occur. This is joint work with Shigui Ruan and Gail Wolkowicz.

Statistical Modeling And Characterization Of Induced Seismicity Within The Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, Sid Kothari Oct 2019

Statistical Modeling And Characterization Of Induced Seismicity Within The Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, Sid Kothari

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In western Canada, there has been an increase in seismic activity linked to anthropogenic energy-related operations including conventional hydrocarbon production, wastewater fluid injection and more recently hydraulic fracturing (HF). Statistical modeling and characterization of the space, time and magnitude distributions of the seismicity clusters is vital for a better understanding of induced earthquake processes and development of predictive models. In this work, a statistical analysis of the seismicity in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin was performed across past and present time periods by utilizing a compiled earthquake catalogue for Alberta and eastern British Columbia. Specifically, the frequency-magnitude statistics were analyzed …

Study Group On Climate Change Recommendations Progress Report, Dano Weisbord

Year on Climate Change: Other Materials

Climate change is an urgent, complex problem. Human activities are pushing the climate beyond the range of conditions experienced over the last few million years and toward abrupt, unpredictable, highly damaging and potentially irreversible impacts. Effective responses will require ambitious, multifaceted plans of action.

Potential Liability For Physicians Using Artificial Intelligence, Nicholson W. Price Ii, Glenn Cohen, Sara Gerke Oct 2019

Potential Liability For Physicians Using Artificial Intelligence, Nicholson W. Price Ii, Glenn Cohen, Sara Gerke

Articles

Artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly making inroads into medical practice, especially in forms that rely on machine learning, with a mix of hope and hype. Multiple AI-based products have now been approved or cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration(FDA), and health systems and hospitals are increasingly deploying AI-based systems. For example, medical AI can support clinical decisions, such as recommending drugs or dosages or interpreting radiological images. One key difference from most traditional clinical decision support software is that some medical AI may communicate results or recommendations to the care team without being able to communicate the underlying …
