Over the past few years, deep learning, e.g., Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), have shown promise on facial expression recog- nition. However, the performance degrades dramatically especially in close-to-real-world settings due to high intra-class variations and high inter-class similarities introduced by subtle facial appearance changes, head pose variations, illumination changes, occlusions, and identity-related attributes, e.g., age, race, and gender. The chemistry of the reaction of Os3(CO)10(NCCH3)2 with representatives of unsaturated amides and esters, RCOCHCH2 (R=(CH3)2N, CH3O) has been investigated. In these reactions, it has been observed that a CH bond on the β-carbon atom is readily activated by triosmium carbonyl clusters. The activation of β-carbon C-H bond in unsaturated amides and esters provides a robust platform for studying multicenter C-H bond transformations and for C-C bond formation via hydrogen shift and CO insertion processes. Multiple population-period transient spectroscopy (MUPPETS) is a two dimensional ultrafast time resolved spectroscopy technique. MUPPETS uses three pairs of optical pulses over two time periods to separate homogeneous and heterogeneous causes of rate dispersion. This dissertation details improvements to the MUPPETS optical assembly enabling measurements on systems that previously fell outside of the MUPPETS 2-ns time window. In addition, the theoretical groundwork is laid to unveil the hidden coordinate controlling rate exchange using 2D and 3D correlation functions.

Malicious insiders increasingly affect organizations by leaking classified data to unautho- rized entities. Detecting insiders’ misuses in computer systems is a challenging problem. In this dissertation, we propose two approaches to detect such threats: a probabilistic graph- ical model-based approach and a deep learning-based approach. We investigate the logs of computer-based activities to discover patterns of misuse. We model user’s behaviors as sequences of computer-based events.

Each study contains a device based on an N-phenylimide framework, which has restricted rotation about the N-C (imide-phenyl) single bond due to a steric clash from the imide carbonyl and the phenyl rings ortho substituent. In general, two ground states are observed by 1H NMR, which are separated by a single transition state (TS). The detection of blood on fabrics for forensic purposes is a widely studied topic in forensic science, and to that end, effort in this laboratory has been devoted to developing a thermal imaging method called steam thermography. Steam thermography is a method used to enhance chemical contrast in thermographic images by exposing a surface to water vapor during imaging. The exposure of water vapor to the surface generates heat, and can differentially increase the thermographically measured apparent temperature of imaged surfaces. Sex determining region Y-box 2 (Sox2) is a transcription factor essential for maintaining self-renewal and pluripotency of undifferentiated embryonic stem cells. Sox2 is involved in multiple processes of cancer cells, however, regulation of Sox2 expression and the consequences of that regulation in cancer remains elusive. Reproducibility crises have arisen in psychology and other behavioral sciences, spurring efforts to ensure research findings are credible and replicable. Although reforms are occurring at professional levels in terms of new publication parameters and open science initiatives, the credibility and reproducibility of undergraduate research deserves attention. Undergraduate behavioral science research projects that rely on small convenience samples of participants, overuse hypothesis testing for drawing meaning from data, and engage in opaque statistical computing are vulnerable to producing nonreproducible findings. These vulnerabilities are reviewed, and practical recommendations for improving the credibility and reproducibility of undergraduate behavioral science research are offered.

An often overlooked connection between karst groundwater systems and surface water is spring flow reversal, the flow of river water into karst springs caused by changes in hydraulic gradient. Karst aquifers are subject to the intrusion of river water when the hydraulic head of a base level river is higher than the hydraulic head of a base level spring. When this occurs, the flow out of the spring reverses, allowing river water to enter base level conduits. To study neutrino oscillations, the knowledge of the initial neutrino energy is required. This energy cannot be determined directly because neutrino beams have a broad energy distribution. Instead, the initial energy for each event is estimated from the final state particles of a neutrino-nucleus interaction using two main approaches. The feedback interconnection of two systems written in terms of Chen-Fliess series can be described explicitly in terms of the antipode of the output feedback Hopf algebra. At present, there are three known computational approaches to calculating this antipode: the left coproduct method, the right coproduct method, and the derivation method. Each of these algorithms is defined recursively, and thus becomes computationally expensive quite quickly.
