Small molecule modulators of SH2-containing inositol 5’-phosphatase (SHIP) have recently become a hotly pursued area in medicinal chemistry. Pharmaceutical targeting of SHIP with small molecules has been identified as a new method to directly influence the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) cell signaling pathway. Modulation of this pathway may be utilized in the development of interesting new therapeutics. A better understanding of the role that SHIP phosphatase activity plays in a number of disease states ranging from cancer to autoimmune disease to obesity may be ascertained by use of small molecule inhibitors. The first part of this dissertation pertains to the fringe analysis of a hydration layer that forms spontaneously when biofilms dry. This layer at optical thickness ˂ 20 µm is approximately 1-2 orders of magnitude thinner than the biofilm thickness as measured by confocal Raman microscopy and confocal fluorescent microscopy. Drying/rehydration experiments performed on films withstood multiple cycles, returning to the same optical thickness proving their robust nature. The strength of a distinct water peak (1451 nm) in addition to others, reflects the thickness of the hydration layer. This research addresses the aerosol characteristics and variability over Cairo and the Greater Delta region over the last 20 years using an integrative multi-sensor approach of remotely sensed and PM10 ground data. The accuracy of these satellite aerosol products is also evaluated and compared through cross-validation against ground observations from the AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) project measured at local stations. Minerals chosen for provenance studies are typically those that are resistant to resetting during low-moderate temperature metamorphic events and thus preserve information about their source region. However, minerals that are extremely resistant to weathering (e.g. quartz, zircon) can be recycled, often multiple times, and thus can cause confusion about the amount of material derived from immediate sources versus those from the original source region. Resistant minerals, such as zircon, that generally only form under very high temperature events (i.e. magmatic events) often miss recording orogenic events that are dominated by moderate temperature, magma-poor, metamorphic events. The Plavecká jaskyňa Cave on the western fault edge of the Malé Karpaty Mountains (western Slovakia) is a result of multi-phased hypogene speleogenesis. It formed in fractured Triassic carbonates by waters ascending along the Vienna Basin Transform Fault between Malé Karpaty Mountains and Záhorská nížina Lowland (the north-eastern part of the Vienna Basin) and/or the N–S-trending faults that intersect it in the cave vicinity. Morphologically, the cave is featured by (1) phreatic chimneys, cupolas, ceiling pockets, enlarged fissures with spongework cavities, upward wall channels and upward oriented large scallops, (2) epiphreatic flat corrosion bedrock floors, feeding fissures and wall water-table …

In this paper, we evaluate the self-declared industry classifications and industry relationships between companies listed on either the Nasdaq or the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) markets. Large corporations typically operate in multiple industries simultaneously; however, for investment purposes they are classified as belonging to a single industry. This simple classification obscures the actual industries within which a company operates, and, therefore, the investment risks of that company.

Using time-series data and turbine blade inspection assessments, we present a classification model in order to predict remaining turbine blade life in wind turbines. Capturing the kinetic energy of wind requires complex mechanical systems, which require sophisticated maintenance and planning strategies. There are many traditional approaches to monitoring the internal gearbox and generator, but the condition of turbine blades can be difficult to measure and access. Accurate and cost- effective estimates of turbine blade life cycles will drive optimal investments in repairs and improve overall performance. Harvesting fertilized rye (Secale cereale L.) cover crop has been suggested as a method to increase producer revenue and biofuel feedstock production, but drainage N loss impacts are currently unknown. Using the tested Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM) across several N rates, spring application of 120 kg N ha-1 prior to winter rye harvest reduced drainage N loss by 54% compared with no cover crop and by 18% compared with planted rye that was neither fertilized nor harvested. Estimates of producer revenue and net energy were also positive, with 8.3 Mg ha-1 of harvested rye biomass. …

Biochar, a co-product of thermochemical conversion of lignocellulosic materials into advanced biofuels, may be used as a soil amendment to enhance the sustainability of biomass harvesting. We investigated the impact of biochar amendments (0, 5, 10, and 20 g-biochar kg− 1 soil) on the quality of a Clarion soil (Mesic Typic Hapludolls), collected (0–15 cm) in Boone County, Iowa. Repacked soil columns were incubated for 500 days at 25 °C and 80% relative humidity. The Midwestern U.S. landscape is one of the most highly altered and intensively managed ecosystems in the country. The predominant crops grown are maize (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Ethanol production from corn grain has increased signifi cantly during the past ten years in the US. This increase was driven by government policy guided by the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and embodied in the Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax Credit and other legislation created to promote a biofuels industry. One of the most prevalent environmental issues throughout the Midwest is nitrate (N03) contamination of surface waters. Non-point source pollution resulting from nitrogen (N) fertilizer use on artificially drained agricultural land has been identified as a major contributor to this problem. High levels of nitratenitrogen (N03-N) in water supplies pose risks to humans and livestock (Tyson et. al., 1992), and has cost some communities millions of dollars for N03 removal. Application of biochar to highly weathered tropical soils has been shown to enhance soil quality and decrease leaching of nutrients. Little, however, is known about the effects of biochar applications on temperate region soils. Our objective was to quantify the impact of biochar on leaching of plant nutrients following application of swine manure to a typical Midwestern agricultural soil. Repacked soil columns containing 0, 5, 10, and 20 g-biochar kg− 1-soil, with and without 5 g kg− 1 of dried swine manure were leached weekly for 45 weeks. In this thesis, we look at a novel way of finding roots of a scalar polynomial using eigenvalue techniques. We extended this novel method to the polynomial eigenvalue problem (PEP). PEP have been used in many science and engineering applications such vibrations of structures, computer-aided geometric design, robotics, and machine learning. This thesis explains this idea in the order of which we discovered it.

I use instrumental and ice core records to examine drivers of observed isotope variability in the Upper Kaskawulsh-Donjek (UKD) region of the St. Elias Mountains, Yukon, Canada over the time frame of instrument-proxy overlap (mid-1900s to present). One of the drivers of post-depositional isotope signal alteration is the vertical percolation of meltwater from the glacier surface through shallow layers of snow, which causes a reduction in the amplitude of the isotope signal recorded in ice cores. Mo nitrogenase (N2ase) utilizes a two-component protein system, the catalytic MoFe and its electron-transfer partner FeP, to reduce atmospheric dinitrogen (N2) to ammonia (NH3). The FeMo cofactor contained in the MoFe protein serves as the catalytic center for this reaction and has long inspired model chemistry oriented toward activating N2. This field of chemistry has relied heavily on the detailed characterization of how Mo N2ase accomplishes this feat.
