Multi-Sensor Data Fusion With Network Delays And Correlated Noises, Shankai Zhang, Zhu Cui, Su Zhong, Dai Juan

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: This paper focuses on the state estimation for multi-sensor system with network delays and correlated noises. An orthogonal transformation method is applied to remove the correlations between different noises. For the problem of packet delays due to the unreliable network, a buffer with certain length is introduced to store the measurements, and the measurements are reordered using a timestamp in the buffer. Based on that, a novel sequential data fusion algorithm is proposed, by which the influence of the noise correlation and packet delays can be weakened effectively. Compared with the traditional sequential fusion method, the proposed algorithm has …

An Application Of Deep Learning Models To Automate Food Waste Classification, Alejandro Zachary Espinoza Dec 2019

An Application Of Deep Learning Models To Automate Food Waste Classification, Alejandro Zachary Espinoza

Dissertations and Theses

Food wastage is a problem that affects all demographics and regions of the world. Each year, approximately one-third of food produced for human consumption is thrown away. In an effort to track and reduce food waste in the commercial sector, some companies utilize third party devices which collect data to analyze individual contributions to the global problem. These devices track the type of food wasted (such as vegetables, fruit, boneless chicken, pasta) along with the weight. Some devices also allow the user to leave the food in a kitchen container while it is weighed, so the container weight must also …

Schrödinger Evolution Of Superoscillations With Δ - And Δ′ -Potentials, Yakir Aharonov, Jussi Behrndt, Fabrizio Colombo, Peter Schlosser

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper, we study the time persistence of superoscillations as the initial data of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation with δ- and δ′-potentials. It is shown that the sequence of solutions converges uniformly on compact sets, whenever the initial data converge in the topology of the entire function space A1(C). Convolution operators acting in this space are our main tool. In particular, a general result about the existence of such operators is proven. Moreover, we provide an explicit formula as well as the large time asymptotics for the time evolution of a plane wave under δ- and δ′-potentials.

Albert Forms, Quaternions, Schubert Varieties & Embeddability, Jasmin Omanovic Dec 2019

Albert Forms, Quaternions, Schubert Varieties & Embeddability, Jasmin Omanovic

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The origin of embedding problems can be understood as an effort to find some minimal datum which describes certain algebraic or geometric objects. In the algebraic theory of quadratic forms, Pfister forms are studied for a litany of powerful properties and representations which make them particularly interesting to study in terms of embeddability. A generalization of these properties is captured by the study of central simple algebras carrying involutions, where we may characterize the involution by the existence of particular elements in the algebra. Extending this idea even further, embeddings are just flags in the Grassmannian, meaning that their study …

X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction And Optical Luminescence Studies Of Phase Transition Of Titania Nanotubes, Lu Yao Dec 2019

X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction And Optical Luminescence Studies Of Phase Transition Of Titania Nanotubes, Lu Yao

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The one-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) and their derivatives have been extensively studied due to their wide applications, such as photocatalysts, solar cell, paints and so on. Since TiO2 has a wide band gap (~3.0 eV), its photo-absorption as the photocatalyst only occurs in the UV region that wastes mostly solar energy. Therefore, the solution to higher photocatalytic efficiency has been sought for some time. This thesis presents a study of the size-dependent phase transitions of TiO2 NTs using synchrotron-based X-ray techniques. The chemical environment including local symmetry and the luminescence origin of the TiO2 NTs …

Don’T Give Up On Nuclear Energy, Daniel Gertner Dec 2019

Don’T Give Up On Nuclear Energy, Daniel Gertner

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies

The nuclear power plant failures at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl in the late 1970s and 1980s split Americans into two passionate camps. For some, nuclear plants posed serious threats to both environmental and national security, and, for others, nuclear energy remained the most viable path to clean, reliable power in the United States. But following the fervent debates of the late 20th century, the national conversation around nuclear power stagnated. A few ardent advocates and opponents notwithstanding, nuclear power left the public eye. Popular energy debates—especially among young people—now center around flashier topics like the Green New Deal, electric …

The Dirty Clean Fuel, Sawyer Krivanek Dec 2019

The Dirty Clean Fuel, Sawyer Krivanek

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies

Hydraulic fracking began nearly 80 years ago and was initially headlined as a brand new, fuel efficient alternative to coal and oil. Natural gas has been disguised as a clean fuel, when in reality it is just another dirty, polluting, environmentally harmful fossil fuel. The detriments of fracking heavily outweigh the benefits, and it needs to be banned on public and private lands. Natural gas has been viewed as a cleaner alternative to coal and oil, so immediately fossil fuel industries took advantage of that narrative. Consumers, eager for cleaner alternatives, have been tricked into buying into the fracking fad. …

Implications Of The Modifiable Areal Unit Problem For Wildfire Analyses, Timothy P. Nagle-Mcnaughton, Xi Gong, Jose A. Constantine Dec 2019

Implications Of The Modifiable Areal Unit Problem For Wildfire Analyses, Timothy P. Nagle-Mcnaughton, Xi Gong, Jose A. Constantine

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Wildfires pose a danger to both ecologies and communities. To this end, many large-scale analyses of wildfire patterns and behavior rely on the aggregation of point data to polygons, typically those based on distinct disparate ecological areas. However, the sizes, shapes, andorientations of the polygons to which data are aggregated are not neutral factors in the resulting analysis. The influence of the aggregation polygons on calculated results is known as the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP), which is well-documented in the spatial statistics literature. Despite the documentation of the MAUP, relatively few wildfire studies consider the effects of the MAUP …

Simulation Study On Aerodynamic Characteristics Of Flapping-Wing Aircraft With Multi-Stage Wing And Multiple Degree Of Freedom, Yonggang Yang, Xindong Gu

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In the traditonal flapping-wing aircraft model, most of the wings are two-dimensional rigid wings, and the upswing and downwing processes are completely symmetrical. In order to further improve the aerodynamic characteristics of the flapping-wing aircraft, this paper uses the idea of approximate flexibility to establish the multi-stage wing to achieve the approximate flexibility effect. At the same time, the rapid return characteristic is added to prolong the down-flapping time. And a three-dimensional model of “flutter-twist-bend folding” is proposed by adding the bending-folding motion on the basis of the original movement and twisting motion. The model is imported into Xflow …
