It goes without saying that the schools in the consortium are used to dealing with gifted and talented students. However with such high-caliber students, we also have high expectations. What resources do we offer to the students who struggle at our institutions? This presentation will detail the setup and results of EXCEL2 - a summer bridge program offered at the Illinois Mathematics & Science Academy to help students who were unable to meet course expectations. The program operated through a hybrid online/in-person model - with instruction primarily given through video conferencing but coupled with an on-campus experience.

CONTEXT: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of incident blindness among working-age adults in the United States. Federally designated safety-net clinics (FDSC) often serve as point-of-contact for patients least likely to receive recommended DR screenings, creating opportunity for targeted interventions to increase screening access and compliance.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: With such a goal, we implemented and assessed the longitudinal performance of an FDSC-based telemedicine DR screening (TDRS) network of 22 clinical sites providing nonmydriatic fundus photography with remote interpretation and reporting. Retrospective analysis of patient encounters between February 2014 and January 2019 was performed to assess rates of …

Despite significant improvement in computational and observational capabilities, predicting intensity and intensification of major tropical cyclones remains a challenge. In 2017 Hurricane Maria intensified to a Category 5 storm within 24 h, devastating Puerto Rico. In 2019 Hurricane Dorian, predicted to remain tropical storm, unexpectedly intensified into a Category 5 storm and destroyed the Bahamas. The official forecast and computer models were unable to predict rapid intensification of these storms. One possible reason for this is that key physics, including microscale processes at the air-sea interface, are poorly understood and parameterized in existing forecast models. Here we show that surfactants …

Coevolution, Dynamics And Allostery Conspire In Shaping Cooperative Binding And Signal Transmission Of The Sars-Cov-2 Spike Protein With Human Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2, Gennady M. Verkhivker
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Binding to the host receptor is a critical initial step for the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to enter into target cells and trigger virus transmission. A detailed dynamic and energetic view of the binding mechanisms underlying virus entry is not fully understood and the consensus around the molecular origins behind binding preferences of SARS-CoV-2 for binding with the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) host receptor is yet to be established. In this work, we performed a comprehensive computational investigation in which sequence analysis and modeling of coevolutionary networks are combined with atomistic molecular simulations and comparative binding free energy analysis of …
Unifying Security Policy Enforcement: Theory And Practice, Shamaria Engram
Unifying Security Policy Enforcement: Theory And Practice, Shamaria Engram
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Security policies stipulate restrictions on the behaviors of systems to prevent themfrom behaving in harmful ways. One way to ensure that systems satisfy the constraints of a security policy is through the use of security enforcement mechanisms. To understand the fundamental limitations of such mechanisms, formal methods are employed to prove properties and reason about their behaviors. The particular formalism employed, however, typically depends on the time at which a mechanism operates.
Mechanisms operating before a program's execution are static mechanisms, and mechanisms operating during a program's execution are dynamic mechanisms. Static mechanisms are fundamentally limited in the types of …

Organic-Inorganic Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals And Solar Cells, Rui Guo
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A great challenge facing humanity in the 21st century is finding inexhaustible and inexpensive energy sources to power the planet. Renewable energies are the best solutions because of their abundance, diversity, and pollution-free emission. Solar energy is the cleanest and most abundant renewable energy source available. In the continuing quest for efficient and low-cost solar cells, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as a potential replacement for silicon solar cells. Since 2009, the record efficiencies of PSCs have been skyrocketing from 3.8 % to 25.2 % and are now approaching the theoretical limit. Along with the three-dimensional perovskites used …

Multifunctional Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mofs) For Applications In Sustainability, Gaurav Verma
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Climate change, affordable and clean energy, and responsible consumption and production are some of the important goals to be achieved for sustainable development. The current technologies used to address these challenges are energy and resource intensive. Furthermore, there are various limitations related to cost, storage, scalability and safety.Adsorbent materials are seen as a promising alternative remediation system due to their low energy consumption and minimal chemical waste production. However, most of the traditional adsorbents, such as activated carbon and zeolites lack the structural tunability to have long-term effectiveness and their use is limited. As discussed in Chapter 1, metal organic-frameworks …

Always-On Quantum Error Tracking With Continuous Parity Measurements, Razieh Mohseninia, Jing Yang, Irfan Siddiqi, Andrew N. Jordan, Justin Dressel
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We investigate quantum error correction using continuous parity measurements to correct bit-flip errors with the three-qubit code. Continuous monitoring of errors brings the benefit of a continuous stream of information, which facilitates passive error tracking in real time. It reduces overhead from the standard gate-based approach that periodically entangles and measures additional ancilla qubits. However, the noisy analog signals from continuous parity measurements mandate more complicated signal processing to interpret syndromes accurately. We analyze the performance of several practical filtering methods for continuous error correction and demonstrate that they are viable alternatives to the standard ancilla-based approach. As an optimal …

A Modelling Study For Smart Pigging Technique For Pipeline Leak Detection, Caitlyn Judith Thiberville
LSU Master's Theses
Although leak incidents continue, a pipeline remains the most reliable mode of transportation within the oil and gas industry. It becomes even more important today because the projection for new pipelines is expected to increase by 1 billion BOE through 2035. In addition, increasing number and length of subsea tiebacks face new challenges in term of data acquisition, monitoring, analysis, and remedial actions. Passive leak-detection methods commonly used in the industry have been successful with some limitations in that they often cannot detect small leaks and seeps. In addition to a thorough review of related topics, this study investigates how …
The Optimum Maximum Allowed Displacement In Monte Carlo Simulation Of One-Component Plasma, Iyad Suwan
The Optimum Maximum Allowed Displacement In Monte Carlo Simulation Of One-Component Plasma, Iyad Suwan
Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
In this paper, a periodic One-Component Plasma (OCP) system of N-point particles is simulated by Monte Carlo (MC) technique in three dimensions. Because of the long range nature of the Coulomb potential, no cut-off distance is considered in calculations (i.e, for each particle i, the effect of the other N-1 particles on i, is taken into account). The maximum allowed displacement "dmax" used in MC simulation controls the convergence to the equilibrium state of the system. An optimum maximum allowed displacement, O-dmax, is found and is given by a function of the temperature and the density of the system. Obtaining …
Negative Magnetoresistivity In Tl4se3s Crystals, Atef Fayez Qasrawi
Negative Magnetoresistivity In Tl4se3s Crystals, Atef Fayez Qasrawi
Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
The temperature and magnetic field dependencies of the magnetoresistivity of Tl4Se3S crystals have been measured in the temperature region of 195-310 K at magnetic fields up to 1.4 T. The magnetoresistivity is observed to exhibit negative values at all measured temperatures. Increasing the magnetic field intensity leads to larger values of negative magnetoresistivity. The magnetoresistivity as a function of applied field was described by the Khosla-Fischer model for spin scattering of carriers in an impurity band. The temperature dependence of magnetoresistivity has revealed the existence of paramagnetic–ferromagnetic and ferromagnetic–paramagnetic phase transitions at 270 and 220 K, respectively. The existence of …

In general, the bathrooms and stores were found to have a …
Effect Of Sodium Based Transparent Binders On The Optical Properties Of Gase Thin Films, Ahmad Omar
Effect Of Sodium Based Transparent Binders On The Optical Properties Of Gase Thin Films, Ahmad Omar
Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
The effect of sodium based transparent binders on the optical properties of vacuum evaporated GaSe thin films are explored by means of optical reflectivity and transmittance of the binder, GaSe and GaSe/binder interfaces in the incident light wavelength range of 300-1100 nm. The analysis of the absorption coefficient spectra for the three samples revealed a pronounced red shift in the direct allowed electron transition's energy band gap of the GaSe. In addition, the band tail states of GaSe, which was observed at ~ 0.25 eV, disappeared upon binder coating. The binder coated GaSe films screen the energy band gap of …
The Optimum Maximum Allowed Displacement In Monte Carlo Simulation Of Lennard-Jones Potential Point Particles, Iyad Suwan
Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
In this paper, periodic systems of N point particles with Lennard-Jones potential are simulated in three dimensional space using Monte Carlo technique. The maximum allowed displacement used in Monte Carlo simulation of any N-particle system controls the convergence of the calculated potential energy to its physical situation. The optimum maximum allowed displacement associated with 50% acceptance rate is found. Since Lennard-Jones potential is a short range one, it is considered to be zero beyond some cut-off radius. The optimum dimensionless cut-off radius in the Lennard-Jones case is 2.5, which is used in simulations. An explicit mathematical formula for the optimum …

Pecification Of Antimony And Its Inorganic Species In Grass Samples Along An Austrian Motorway By Hplc-Id-Icp-Ms, Sameer Amereih
Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
In this study the distribution of Sb concentrations and Sb species (Sb III and Sb V) in grass samples in a roadside profile were investigated. The Sb depositions on the grass surfaces are higher than the bioaccumulations of Sb in grass samples where it reaches two-fold concentrations at locations nearest to the traffic. The Sb species distribution, after a chromatographic separation, was determined using on-line isotope dilution (ID). The extraction of Sb species from contaminated grass samples was carried out using 100 mmol L-1 citric acid (pH 2.08). The concentrations of Sb species in grass show decrease with increasing distance …

Geometric Approaches And Bifurcations In The Dichotomous Decision Model, Abdelrahim Mousa
Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
Resorting to the Dichotomous decision model, where individuals can make alternative decisions, we study two geometric approaches to construct all possible decisions tiling. Each decision tiling indicates the way the Nash equilibria co-exist and change with the relative decision preferences of the individuals. We find the Nash domains for the pure and mixed strategies and characterize the space of all parameters where the pure Nash equilibria are either cohesive or disparate. We show how the coordinates of the influence matrix together with the total number of individuals affect significantly the occurrence of bifurcations with and without overlaps between the pure …

Dynamical And Thermal Properties Of 850 Nm Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (Vcsel), Muayad Abusaa
Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
Vertical cavity surface emitting laser diodes (VCVSELs) are widely used in different areas especially in telecommunications because of their unique properties compared to other types of lasers. In the present work, we explain the dynamical and thermal properties of 850 nm VCSELs. Specifically, we determine the threshold current, output power for a continuous wave operation and pulsed operation for different pulse durations, the wavelength as a function of (injected current/ dissipated power/ temperature).

This paper aimed to compare the modern methods of cash flow forecasting with the traditional ones. In other words, the researcher compared between the Probabilistic Neural Networks and Transfer Function. It is worth mentioning that cash flow forecasting , nowadays, is very important and helps the upper management plan, control, assess the performance and make decisions. More specifically, in this paper, the Artificial Neural networks were used to diagnose the nature of the cash flow for the next period of time and then forecast the cash flow. The experiment was conducted in The General company for Electricity Distribution in Baghdad. …
Studying The Linear Complex Pt Symmetric Potential, Roland Lombard
Studying The Linear Complex Pt Symmetric Potential, Roland Lombard
Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
We investigate the spectrum of the linear complex PT symmetric potential V(x) = λ|x| + icx. Semi analytical solutions are given by using properties of the Airy functions. The numerical integration of the differential equation system is discussed. We show that the number of eigenstates with a real eigenvalue is limited, depending on the ratio c/λ and on the quantum number n, reflecting a spontaneous breaking of the PT symmetry. For the ground state ( n = 0), we conjecture the eigenvalue to be real whatever the value of c.

Mass And Number Size Distributions Of Rbc In Snow And Firn Samples From Pine Island Glacier, West Antarctica, Luciano Marquetto, Susan Kaspari, Jefferson Cardia Simões
Geological Sciences Faculty Scholarship
An extended‐range Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2) coupled to a Marin‐5 nebulizer was used to measure the refractory black carbon (rBC) mass and number size distributions in 1,004 samples from a West Antarctica snow/firn core. The SP2 was calibrated using Aquadag and a Centrifugal Particle Mass Analyzer for BC particles ranging from 0.5 to 800 fg. Our results indicate a significant contribution of rare, large particles of mass‐equivalent diameter (DBC) > 500 nm to the total rBC mass (36%), while small particles (DBC < 100 nm) are abundant but contribute <8% to total rBC mass. We observed a primary mass median diameter of 162 ± 40 nm, smaller than reported for snow in other regions of the globe but similar to East Antarctica rBC size distributions. In addition, we observed other modes at 673, 1,040, and >1,810 nm (uncontained mode). We compared two sets of samples from different seasons …

The impacts of invasive species on biodiversity may be mitigated or exacerbated by abiotic environmental changes. Invasive plants can restructure soil fungal communities with important implications for native biodiversity and nutrient cycling, yet fungal responses to invasion may depend on numerous anthropogenic stressors. In this study, we experimentally invaded a long-term soil warming and simulated nitrogen deposition experiment with the widespread invasive plant Alliaria petiolata (garlic mustard) and tested the responses of soil fungal communities to invasion, abiotic factors, and their interaction. We focused on the phytotoxic garlic mustard because it suppresses native mycorrhizae across forests of North America. We …
