Adaptive Graph Convolutional Neural Network And Its Biomedical Applications, Ruoyu Li Dec 2020

Adaptive Graph Convolutional Neural Network And Its Biomedical Applications, Ruoyu Li

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations

As the rise of graph neural networks, many deep learning frameworks have been extended to graph-structured data. The research in many diverse regimes have been tremendously reshaped, especially in areas like medical image understanding. When input data reach the scale of whole slides images (WSIs), the modeling becomes more challenging and we have to balance the trade-off between performance and efficiency. Furthermore, the theory of existing graph convolution has its own constraints which prevent learning robust graph representation on data that has diverse topological structure and are infeasible for graph sampling or coarsening. To tackle the problems we introduced a …

Scalable Structural Index Construction For Json Analytics, Lin Jiang, Junqiao Qiu, Zhijia Zhao Dec 2020

Scalable Structural Index Construction For Json Analytics, Lin Jiang, Junqiao Qiu, Zhijia Zhao

Michigan Tech Publications

JavaScript Object Notation ( JSON) and its variants have gained great popularity in recent years. Unfortunately, the performance of their analytics is often dragged down by the expensive JSON parsing. To address this, recent work has shown that building bitwise indices on JSON data, called structural indices, can greatly accelerate querying. Despite its promise, the existing structural index construction does not scale well as records become larger and more complex, due to its (inherently) sequential construction process and the involvement of costly memory copies that grow as the nesting level increases. To address the above issues, this work introduces Pison …

Language-Driven Region Pointer Advancement For Controllable Image Captioning, Annika Lindh, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher

Conference papers

Controllable Image Captioning is a recent sub-field in the multi-modal task of Image Captioning wherein constraints are placed on which regions in an image should be described in the generated natural language caption. This puts a stronger focus on producing more detailed descriptions, and opens the door for more end-user control over results. A vital component of the Controllable Image Captioning architecture is the mechanism that decides the timing of attending to each region through the advancement of a region pointer. In this paper, we propose a novel method for predicting the timing of region pointer advancement by treating the …

Alkylation Of Benzene On Immobilized Phosphotungstic Acid, Kofi Kankam Dec 2020

Alkylation Of Benzene On Immobilized Phosphotungstic Acid, Kofi Kankam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Linear alkylbenzenes (LAB) are key intermediates in the synthesis of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactants that are used in the manufacture of detergents. Production of LAB with traditional Lewis acids as catalysts, such as hydrofluoric acid, results in the formation of large amounts of toxic wastes and corrosion of industrial equipment. Phosphotungstic acid (PTA) has gained much attention in recent years as a solid catalyst for various alkylation reactions. This research work aims to develop a novel material based on PTA-containing silica gel, which can effectively catalyze LAB synthesis. Sol-gel synthesis of silica gel in the presence of PTA and tetraethyl …

Monte Carlo Simulations Of Awkward Actions, David John Amdahl Dec 2020

Monte Carlo Simulations Of Awkward Actions, David John Amdahl

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Time derivatives of scalar fields occur quadratically in textbook actions. A simple Legendre transformation turns the Lagrangian into a Hamiltonian that is quadratic in the momentum. The partition function over the momentum is Gaussian. Mean values of operators are basically euclidian path integrals of their classical counterparts with positive weight functions. Monte Carlo simulations can estimate such mean values. This familiar framework falls apart when the time derivatives do not occur quadratically. The Legendre transformation becomes difficult or so intractable that the Hamiltonian can’t be determined. Even if the Hamiltonian is found, it usually is so complicated that the partition …

Assessing Grassed Waterway Implementation Using Acpf And Swat Models, Kirsten Schaefer Dec 2020

Assessing Grassed Waterway Implementation Using Acpf And Swat Models, Kirsten Schaefer

MSU Graduate Theses

Agriculture is the most significant contributor of nonpoint source pollutants in US waterways, with sediment being the most prevalent cause of impairments. Sediment loss mitigation occurs through Best Management Practices (BMPs), such as grassed waterways. Federal and state agencies incentivize the implementation of BMPs through cost-share programs for farmers. The investment of public funds has increased pressure to demonstrate the effectiveness and value of individual projects, necessitating the development of strategies for prioritizing projects based on the sensitivity of sites to sediment erosion and optimal locations for implementation. This study has three primary objectives: (i) document existing locations of grassed …

Lattice And Charge Order In Layered Bi-Based Topological Insulators, Yanan Li

Theses and Dissertations

Bi2X3 (X=Se/Te) is a topological insulator, as well as a layered dichalcogenide. The topological properties of Bi2Se3 have gained a lot of interest over the past decade. However, as a layered chalcogenide, much of its uniqueness has not been fully discovered, e.g. hosting Charge Density Wave as reported in most other chalcogenides. With intercalation of Nb, Cu and Sr, Bi2Se3 becomes an unconventional superconductor. Together with its topological properties, A-Bi2X3 (A=Nb, Cu and Sr) have been proposed to be potential Topological superconductors. However, the mechanism of the unconventional SC in these compounds is still under discussion.

Estimation Of Transmission Dynamics Of Covid-19 In India: The Influential Saturated Incidence Rate, - Tanvi, Rajiv Aggarwal, Ashutosh Rajput

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A non-linear SEIR mathematical model for coronavirus disease in India has been proposed, by incorporating the saturated incidence rate on the occurrence of new infections. In the model, the threshold quantity known as the reproduction number is evaluated which determines the stability of disease-free equilibrium and the endemic equilibrium points. The disease-free equilibrium point becomes globally asymptotically stable when the corresponding reproduction number is less than unity, whereas, if it is greater than unity then the endemic equilibrium point comes into existence, which is locally asymptotically stable under certain restrictions on the parameters value in the model. The impact of …

Approximating Special Social Influence Maximization Problems, Jie Wu, Ning Wang Dec 2020

Approximating Special Social Influence Maximization Problems, Jie Wu, Ning Wang

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Social Influence Maximization Problems (SIMPs) deal with selecting k seeds in a given Online Social Network (OSN) to maximize the number of eventually-influenced users. This is done by using these seeds based on a given set of influence probabilities among neighbors in the OSN. Although the SIMP has been proved to be NP-hard, it has both submodular (with a natural diminishing-return) and monotone (with an increasing influenced users through propagation) that make the problem suitable for approximation solutions. However, several special SIMPs cannot be modeled as submodular or monotone functions. In this paper, we look at several conditions under which …

A Conceptual Model To Explain Dark Matter And Dark Energy, Jonathan Blackledge Dec 2020

A Conceptual Model To Explain Dark Matter And Dark Energy, Jonathan Blackledge

Articles

This paper considers a conceptual model that attempts to explain ‘Dark Matter’ and‘Dark Energy’. The model is based on considering a gravitational field to be the result of a mass (aHiggs field) scattering pre-existing cosmic background space-time waves or ‘Uber-waves’. The term‘Uber’ is used to denote an outstanding or supreme example of a particular kind of gravitationalwave with cosmic-scale wavelengths that are far in excess of those associated with the gravitationalwaves generated by accelerating masses. Such waves are taken to be the very lowest frequencycomponents associated with the spectrum of space-time waves generated by the ‘Big Bang’ andare supported by …

All-Dielectric Magnetic Metasurface For Advanced Light Control In Dual Polarizations Combined With High-Q Resonances, Daria O. Ignatyeva, Dolendra Karki, Andrey A. Voronov, Mikhail A. Kozhaev, Denis M. Krichevsky, Alexander I. Chernov, Miguel Levy, Vladimir I. Belotelov

Michigan Tech Publications

Nanostructured magnetic materials provide an efficient tool for light manipulation on sub-nanosecond and sub-micron scales, and allow for the observation of the novel effects which are fundamentally impossible in smooth films. For many cases of practical importance, it is vital to observe the magneto-optical intensity modulation in a dual-polarization regime. However, the nanostructures reported on up to date usually utilize a transverse Kerr effect and thus provide light modulation only for p-polarized light. We present a concept of a transparent magnetic metasurface to solve this problem, and demonstrate a novel mechanism for magneto-optical modulation. A 2D array of bismuth-substituted iron-garnet …
