Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Carbonaceous Aerosol Absorption In The Po Valley, Stefania Gilardoni, Paola Massoli, Angela Marinoni, Claudio Mazzoleni, Andrew Freedman, Giovanni Lonati, Silvana De Iuliis, Vorne Gianelle
Michigan Tech Publications
Knowledge gaps in the optical properties of carbonaceous aerosols account for a significant fraction of the uncertainty of aerosol-light interactions in climate models. Both black carbon (BC) and brown carbon (BrC) can display a range of optical properties in ambient aerosol due to different sources and chemical transformation pathways. This study investigates the optical absorption properties of BC and BrC at an urban and a rural site in the Po Valley (Italy), a known European pollution hot spot. We observed spatial and seasonal variability of aerosol absorption coefficients, with the highest values measured in winter at the urban site of …

Development Of A Statistical Model To Predict Materials’ Unit Prices For Future Maintenance And Rehabilitation In Highway Life Cycle Cost Analysis, Changmo Kim, Ghazan Khan, Brent Nguyen, Emily L. Hoang
Mineta Transportation Institute
The main objectives of this study are to investigate the trends in primary pavement materials’ unit price over time and to develop statistical models and guidelines for using predictive unit prices of pavement materials instead of uniform unit prices in life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) for future maintenance and rehabilitation (M&R) projects. Various socio-economic data were collected for the past 20 years (1997–2018) in California, including oil price, population, government expenditure in transportation, vehicle registration, and other key variables, in order to identify factors affecting pavement materials’ unit price. Additionally, the unit price records of the popular pavement materials were …

Projected Impact Of Mid-21st Century Climate Change On Wildfire Hazard In A Major Urban Watershed Outside Portland, Oregon Usa, Andy Mcevoy, Max Nielsen-Pincus, Andres Holz, Arielle J. Catalano, Kelly E. Gleason
Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Characterizing wildfire regimes where wildfires are uncommon is challenged by a lack of empirical information. Moreover, climate change is projected to lead to increasingly frequent wildfires and additional annual area burned in forests historically characterized by long fire return intervals. Western Oregon and Washington, USA (westside) have experienced few large wildfires (fires greater than 100 hectares) the past century and are characterized to infrequent large fires with return intervals greater than 500 years. We evaluated impacts of climate change on wildfire hazard in a major urban watershed outside Portland, OR, USA. We simulated wildfire occurrence and fire regime characteristics under …
Nuclear-Targeted Gold Nanoparticles Enhance The Effects Of Radiation Therapy With And Without Liposomal Delivery, Maureen Aliru
Nuclear-Targeted Gold Nanoparticles Enhance The Effects Of Radiation Therapy With And Without Liposomal Delivery, Maureen Aliru
Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
Less that 10% of pancreatic cancer patients are eligible for curative resection, and clinical trials evaluating chemoradiation in locally advanced patients with unresectable disease have been largely disappointing. New and creative therapeutic approaches are needed to address the unment need for treatment options. The objective of this thesis is to advance radiosensitization of treatment-resistant densely desmoplastic pancreatic cancer using nanoparticles to surmount biological barriers to effective particle distribution for DNA-targeting.
Clinical translation of radiosensitizing nanoparticles has stalled owing to technical challenges. Current strategies to use AuNPs for radiosensitization require large quantities of gold, kilovoltage x-rays, immediate irradiation after intravenous administration, …
Adaptive Discounting In Reinforcement Learning, Milan Zinzuvadiya
Adaptive Discounting In Reinforcement Learning, Milan Zinzuvadiya
Master's Theses
In Markov Decision Process (MDP) models of sequential decision-making, it is common practice to account for temporal discounting by incorporating a constant discount factor. While the effectiveness of fixed-rate discounting in various Reinforcement Learning (RL) settings is well-established, the efficiency of this scheme has been questioned in recent studies. Another notable shortcoming of fixed-rate discounting stems from abstracting away the experiential information of the agent, which is shown to be a significant component of delay discounting in human cognition. To address this issue, this thesis proposes a novel method for adaptive discounting entitled State-wise Adaptive Discounting from Experience (SADE). This …
A Management Strategy Evaluation Of The Impacts Of Interspecific Competition And Recreational Fishery Dynamics On Vermilion Snapper (Rhomboplites Aurorubens) In The Gulf Of Mexico, Megumi C. Oshima
Dissertations
In the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), Vermilion Snapper (Rhomboplites auroruben), are believed to compete with Red Snapper directly for prey and habitat. The two species share similar diets and have significant spatial overlap in the Gulf. Red Snapper are thought to be the dominate competitor, forcing Vermilion Snapper to feed on less nutritious prey when local resources are depleted. In addition to ecological pressures, GOM Vermilion Snapper support substantial commercial and recreational fisheries. Over the past decade, recreational landings have steadily increased, reaching a historical high in 2018. One cause may be stricter regulations for similar target species such as …

A Library Of Low Molecular Weight Fluorescent Probes For The Detection Of Cu(Ii) And Fe(Iii) Ions, Ashley Johnson
Dissertations
This dissertation reports the synthesis and photophysical properties of a family of rhodamine dyes (compounds 3.9-3.13 and 4.6). The rhodamine dyes are prepared in two steps, and fully characterized by ESI-MS (Low and High resolution), X-Ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and FT-IR spectroscopy. The coordination environment of the low molecular weight fluorescent probes (LMFPs) was systematically changed to investigate the thermodynamic behavior between the LMFPs and an array of metal ions (Cu2+, Fe2+, and Hg2+ ions) in protic and aprotic solvent systems. Upon coordinating to metal ions, the π-conjugation of the LMFPs changed, resulting in …
Practical Adhesion Measurements In Organic Coatings; Advancing Understanding And Mechanical Methods Development, Diana Gottschalk
Practical Adhesion Measurements In Organic Coatings; Advancing Understanding And Mechanical Methods Development, Diana Gottschalk
Dissertations
“Adhesion” can be considered either a mechanical or chemical phenomenon. The mechanical interpretation describes the difficulty of separating surfaces and is useful for quantifying performance within applications that depend on bulk and interfacial properties. Chemical adhesion describes interfacial resistance to chemical attack and does not depend on bulk properties. Predicting chemical failure through mechanical measurement is confounded by the influence of bulk properties. However, the prospect is attractive because of the robust tolerance for sample geometries, allowing experiments to resemble an end-use system. The present work's primary goal was to elevate mechanical methods to provide a detailed interfacial characterization of …

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are widely studied for their ability to confine light, produce sharp resonances for sensing applications and serve as avenues for lasing action with topological characteristics. Primarily, the formation of BICs in periodic photonic band gap structures are driven by symmetry incompatibility; structural manipulation or variation of incidence angle from incoming light. In this work, we report two modalities for driving the formation of BICs in terahertz metasurfaces. At normal incidence, we experimentally confirm polarization driven symmetry-protected BICs by the variation of the linear polarization state of light. In addition, we demonstrate through strong coupling …

On A Multiserver Queueing System With Customers’ Impatience Until The End Of Service Under Single And Multiple Vacation Policies, Mokhtar Kadi, Amina A. Bouchentouf, Lahcene Yahiaoui
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper deals with a multiserver queueing system with Bernoulli feedback and impatient customers (balking and reneging) under synchronous multiple and single vacation policies. Reneged customers may be retained in the system. Using probability generating functions (PGFs) technique, we formally obtain the steady-state solution of the proposed queueing system. Further, important performance measures and cost model are derived. Finally, numerical examples are presented.
Statistics Of Branched Populations Split Into Different Types, Thierry E. Huillet
Statistics Of Branched Populations Split Into Different Types, Thierry E. Huillet
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Some population is made of n individuals that can be of P possible species (or types) at equilibrium. How are individuals scattered among types? We study two random scenarios of such species abundance distributions. In the first one, each species grows from independent founders according to a Galton-Watson branching process. When the number of founders P is either fixed or random (either Poisson or geometrically-distributed), a question raised is: given a population of n individuals as a whole, how does it split into the species types? This model is one pertaining to forests of Galton-Watson trees. A second scenario that …

Classification Of Some First Order Functional Differential Equations With Constant Coefficients To Solvable Lie Algebras, J. Z. Lobo, Y. S. Valaulikar
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we shall apply symmetry analysis to some first order functional differential equations with constant coefficients. The approach used in this paper accounts for obtaining the inverse of the classification. We define the standard Lie bracket and make a complete classification of some first order linear functional differential equations with constant coefficients to solvable Lie algebras. We also classify some nonlinear functional differential equations with constant coefficients to solvable Lie algebras.
Accurate Spectral Algorithms For Solving Variable-Order Fractional Percolation Equations, M. A. Abdelkawy
Accurate Spectral Algorithms For Solving Variable-Order Fractional Percolation Equations, M. A. Abdelkawy
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A high accurate spectral algorithm for one-dimensional variable-order fractional percolation equations (VO-FPEs) is considered. We propose a shifted Legendre Gauss-Lobatto collocation (SL-GLC) method in conjunction with shifted Chebyshev Gauss-Radau collocation (SC-GR-C) method to solve the proposed problem. Firstly, the solution and its space fractional derivatives are expanded as shifted Legendre polynomials series. Then, we determine the expansion coefficients by reducing the VO-FPEs and its conditions to a system of ordinary differential equations (SODEs) in time. The numerical approximation of SODEs is achieved by means of the SC-GR-C method. The under-study’s problem subjected to the Dirichlet or non-local boundary conditions is presented …

The Binomial Transform Of P-Recursive Sequences And The Dilogarithm Function, Stephanie L. Harshbarger, Barton L. Willis
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Using a generalized binomial transform and a novel binomial coefficient identity, we will show that the set of p-recursive sequences is closed under the binomial transform. Using these results, we will derive a new series representation for the dilogarithm function that converges on its domain of analyticity. Finally, we will show that this series representation results in a scheme for numerical evaluation of the dilogarithm function that is accurate, efficient, and stable.

Stability Analysis Of Circular Robe’S R3bp With Finite Straight Segment And Viscosity, Bhavneet Kaur, Sumit Kumar, Shipra Chauhan, Dinesh Kumar
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, the effect of viscous force on the linear stability of equilibrium points of the circular Robe’s restricted three-body problem (CRR3BP) with smaller primary as a finite straight segment is studied. The present model comprises of a bigger primary m*1 which is a rigid spherical shell filled with a homogeneous incompressible fluid of density ρ1 and the smaller primary m2 lies outside the shell. The infinitesimal mass m3 is a small solid sphere of density ρ3 moving inside m*1. The pertinent equations of motion of m3 are derived …

Heat And Mass Transfer In Micropolar Model For Blood Flow Through A Stenotic Tapered Artery, Moses S. Dada, Funmilola Alamu-Awoniran
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Heat and mass transfer in blood flow through a tapered artery with mild stenosis is examined. The blood is considered to be an incompressible, micropolar fluid flowing through a vessel with nonsymmetric axial and symmetric radial axes. The geometry of the model takes into account the shape parameter, tapered angle and height of the stenosis. The variation in the shape parameter is used to describe the changes in the axial shape of the stenosis in the artery. The governing equations for the model, comprising the continuity, momentum, energy, and mass transfer equations are transformed and simplified under the assumption of mild …

Effect Of Induced Magnetic Field On Mixed Convection Flow In A Vertical Channel With Symmetric And Asymmetric Wall Heating Conditions, Hasan N. Zaidi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The present paper concerns the study of the induced magnetic field effect on mixed convection flow of viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid in a vertical channel with symmetric and asymmetric wall heating conditions with heat generation. A steady, laminar, and fully developed flow is considered. Through the appropriate choice of dimensionless variable, the governing equations are developed and three types of thermal boundary conditions isothermal-isothermal, isoflux-isothermal, and isothermal-isoflux for the left-right wall of the channel have prescribed. The analytical solutions for the velocity field, temperature field, magnetic field, and induced current density have been acquired for three types of thermal …

New long Chandra grating observations of the O supergiant ζ Pup show not only a brightening of the X-ray emission line flux of 13 per cent in the 18 yr since Chandra’s first observing cycle, but also clear evidence – at more than 4σ significance – of increased wind absorption signatures in its Doppler-broadened line profiles. We demonstrate this with non-parametric analysis of the profiles as well as Gaussian fitting and then use line-profile model fitting to derive a mass-loss rate of 2.47 ± 0.09 × 10−6[Math Processing Error], which is a 40 per cent increase over the value obtained …

This paper presents 3-D Fabry–Pérot (FP) cavities fabricated directly onto cleaved ends of low-loss optical fibers by a two-photon polymerization (2PP) process. This fabrication technique is quick, simple, and inexpensive compared to planar microfabrication processes, which enables rapid prototyping and the ability to adapt to new requirements. These devices also utilize true 3-D design freedom, facilitating the realization of microscale optical elements with challenging geometries. Three different device types were fabricated and evaluated: an unreleased single-cavity device, a released dual-cavity device, and a released hemispherical mirror dual-cavity device. Each iteration improved the quality of the FP cavity's reflection spectrum. The …

This study determined the monthly amount, particle size distribution, and chemical composition of particulate deposition in East Texas over a one-year period. It also recognized the seasonal patterns of this deposition as well as its primary origins as either mineral or organic particulate deposition.
The study recorded the monthly mass of deposition, particle size distribution, and the chemical makeup of deposition throughout a period of twelve months at seven sampling locations. SEM-EDS technology was used in conjunction with PCI programming to measure the sizes of depositional particles throughout this time period and identify their chemical composition.
The total yearly deposition …
