Verification Assisted Gas Reduction For Smart Contracts, Bo Gao, Siyuan Shen, Ling Shi, Jiaying Li, Jun Sun, Lei Bu Dec 2021

Verification Assisted Gas Reduction For Smart Contracts, Bo Gao, Siyuan Shen, Ling Shi, Jiaying Li, Jun Sun, Lei Bu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Smart contracts are computerized transaction protocols built on top of blockchain networks. Users are charged with fees, a.k.a. gas in Ethereum, when they create, deploy or execute smart contracts. Since smart contracts may contain vulnerabilities which may result in huge financial loss, developers and smart contract compilers often insert codes for security checks. The trouble is that those codes consume gas every time they are executed. Many of the inserted codes are however redundant. In this work, we present sOptimize, a tool that optimizes smart contract gas consumption automatically without compromising functionality or security. sOptimize works on smart contract bytecode, …

A Practical Extension To The Ab/Ba Design, My T.A Nguyen Dec 2021

A Practical Extension To The Ab/Ba Design, My T.A Nguyen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this work, we take a close look at a general extension to the traditional AB/BA
crossover design that is commonly used in clinical trials to determine the effectiveness
of new candidate drugs. While the traditional crossover design requires each patient
in the study to be measured on both treatment A and treatment B, we consider the
possibility of additional measurements being available on each patient. This produces
designs such as the AABB/BBAA design which has been used in previous studies.
A general test statistic will be derived to test for treatment effects as well as its
corresponding power function …

Confidence Interval For The Mean Of A Beta Distribution, Sean Rangel Dec 2021

Confidence Interval For The Mean Of A Beta Distribution, Sean Rangel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Statistical inference for the mean of a beta distribution has become increasingly popular in various fields of academic research. In this study, we developed a novel statistical model from likelihood-based techniques to evaluate various confidence interval techniques for the mean of a beta distribution. Simulation studies will be implemented to compare the performance of the confidence intervals. In addition to the development and study involving confidence intervals, we will also apply the confidence intervals to real biological data that was gathered by the Department of Biology at Stephen F. Austin State University and provide recommendations on the best practice.

On Inter-Organizational Trust, Control And Risk In Transboundary Fisheries Governance, Gordon M. Hickey, Hunter T. Snyder, Jasper R. Devries, Owen Temby Dec 2021

On Inter-Organizational Trust, Control And Risk In Transboundary Fisheries Governance, Gordon M. Hickey, Hunter T. Snyder, Jasper R. Devries, Owen Temby

School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Inter-organizational collaboration is often considered essential to transboundary fishery governance, due, in part, to the high levels of task interdependence, the remote and often treacherous conditions, and the limited levels of information available to any policy actor on resource status. In the high seas, Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs) are responsible for sustainably managing highly migratory and straddling fish stocks through the implementation of ecosystem-based approaches and ensuring adequate inter-jurisdictional cooperation. A central question facing RFMO governance is therefore how to structure and sustain inter-organizational transboundary collaboration under high uncertainty? This paper presents the case of the North Atlantic Salmon …

A Fine-Grained Attribute Based Data Retrieval With Proxy Re-Encryption Scheme For Data Outsourcing Systems, Hanshu Hong, Ximeng Liu, Zhixin Sun Dec 2021

A Fine-Grained Attribute Based Data Retrieval With Proxy Re-Encryption Scheme For Data Outsourcing Systems, Hanshu Hong, Ximeng Liu, Zhixin Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Attribute based encryption is suitable for data protection in data outsourcing systems such as cloud computing. However, the leveraging of encryption technique may retrain some routine operations over the encrypted data, particularly in the field of data retrieval. This paper presents an attribute based date retrieval with proxy re-encryption (ABDR-PRE) to provide both fine-grained access control and retrieval over the ciphertexts. The proposed scheme achieves fine-grained data access management by adopting KP-ABE mechanism, a delegator can generate the re-encryption key and search indexes for the ciphertexts to be shared over the target delegatee’s attributes. Throughout the process of data sharing, …

Reinforcement Learning Policy Gradient Methods For Reservoir Operation Management And Control, Sadegh Sadeghi Tabas Dec 2021

Reinforcement Learning Policy Gradient Methods For Reservoir Operation Management And Control, Sadegh Sadeghi Tabas

All Theses

Changes in demand, various hydrological inputs, and environmental stressors are among issues that water managers and policymakers face on a regular basis. These concerns have sparked interest in applying different techniques to determine reservoir operation policy and improve reservoir release decisions. As the resolution of the analysis rises, it becomes more difficult to effectively represent a real-world system using traditional approaches for determining the best reservoir operation policy. One of the challenges is the “curse of dimensionality,” which occurs when the discretization of the state and action spaces becomes finer or when more state or action variables are taken into …

Studies In Consumption And Production Of South Carolina Aquaculture Products, David Cheplick Dec 2021

Studies In Consumption And Production Of South Carolina Aquaculture Products, David Cheplick

All Theses

Market demand for seafood products among South Carolina (SC) consumers has led to increased aquaculture production as a means of supporting the seafood supply chain across the state. Our objective is broken into four distinct parts; (1) understanding consumer’s preferences and perceptions of seafood, (2) calculating their willingness to pay (WTP) for seafood products available in SC using attributes of sustainability and locality; and (3) gathering production metric and anecdotal data from SC oyster growers. Previous research assessing the market channels of seafood in South Carolina is compared to survey results. Respondents indicated that taste and quality were the most …

A Parallelized And Layered Model For The Shallow-Water Equations, Alexander Stevens Dec 2021

A Parallelized And Layered Model For The Shallow-Water Equations, Alexander Stevens

All Theses

An energy- and enstrophy-conserving and optimally-dispersive numerical scheme for the shallow- water equations is accelerated through implementation in the GPU environment. Previous research showed the viability of the numerical scheme under standard shallow-water test cases, but was limited in applications by computation time constraints. We overcome these limitations by paral- lelizing the numerical computation in the GPU environment. We also extend the capabilities of the implementation to support not just a single shallow-water layer, but multiple. These improvements significantly expand the range of tests that can be used to exercise the model, and enable better understanding of the power of …

Efficacy Of Sediment Contaminant Remediation Of The Benthos In A Segment Of The Southern Branch Of The Elizabeth River, Colton Martin

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The bottom sediment of the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, a tributary of Chesapeake Bay, was historically contaminated with hydrocarbons from industrial sources especially wood treatment facilities. The Elizabeth River Project selected a section of the bottom off Money Point in the Southern Branch for a sediment contaminant remediation effort. Prior to initiation of remediation efforts, a survey occurred in summer 2010 to characterize the ecological condition of the benthic communities off Money Point compared to benthic communities of a benthic region across the channel and northwest of Money Point near Blows Creek. That study characterized the benthos of …

Connecting The Dots: The Boons And Banes Of Network Modeling, Sharlee Climer Dec 2021

Connecting The Dots: The Boons And Banes Of Network Modeling, Sharlee Climer

Computer Science Faculty Works

Network modeling transforms data into a structure of nodes and edges such that edges represent relationships between pairs of objects, then extracts clusters of densely connected nodes in order to capture high-dimensional relationships hidden in the data. This efficient and flexible strategy holds potential for unveiling complex patterns concealed within massive datasets, but standard implementations overlook several key issues that can undermine research efforts. These issues range from data imputation and discretization to correlation metrics, clustering methods, and validation of results. Here, we enumerate these pitfalls and provide practical strategies for alleviating their negative effects. These guidelines increase …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

The shortcomings of current anti-human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) drugs has stimulated a search for anti-HCMV compounds with novel targets. We screened collections of bioactive compounds and identified a range of compounds with the potential to inhibit HCMV replication. Of these compounds, we selected bisbenzimide compound RO-90-7501 for further study. We generated analogues of RO-90-7501 and found that one compound, MRT00210423, had increased anti-HCMV activity compared to RO-90-7501. Using a combination of compound analogues, microscopy and biochemical assays we found RO-90-7501 and MRT00210423 interacted with DNA. In single molecule microscopy experiments we found RO-90-7501, but not MRT00210423, was able to compact DNA, …

Data collection at the Belle II experiment started in the spring of 2019. During the early stages of the experiment it is important that the raw data are both copied to permanent storage and made available soon after being recorded to allow for the timely commissioning and calibration of the detector. Automated procedures have been developed to transfer the data from the detector in a timely manner; these procedures include fault management, performance monitoring, and quality checks. It is important that the systems put in place will also scale to the much higher data rates expected in the coming years …

We report the first observation of the processes e+e-→D(1S,2S)η at s=10.866 GeV, with significance exceeding 10σ for both processes. The measured Born cross sections are σ(e+e-→D(2S)η)=2.07±0.21±0.19 pb, and σ(e+e-→D(1S)η)=0.42±0.08±0.04 pb. We also set the upper limit on the cross section of the process e+e-→D(1S)η′ to be σ(e+e-→D(1S)η′)<0.037 pb at 90% C.L. The results are obtained with the data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider in the energy range from 10.63 to 11.02 GeV.

We present the measurement of the first to fourth order moments of the four-momentum transfer squared, q2, of inclusive B→Xcℓ+νℓ decays using the full Belle dataset of 711 fb-1 of integrated luminosity at the (4S) resonance where ℓ=e, μ. The determination of these moments and their systematic uncertainties open new pathways to determine the absolute value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element Vcb using a reduced set of matrix elements of the heavy quark expansion. In order to identify and reconstruct the Xc system, we reconstruct one of the two B-mesons using machine learning techniques in fully hadronic decay modes. The …

Unlike images, finding the desired video content in a large pool of videos is not easy due to the time cost of loading and watching. Most video streaming and sharing services provide the video preview function for a better browsing experience. In this paper, we aim to generate a video preview from a single image. To this end, we propose two cascaded networks, the motion embedding network and the motion expansion network. The motion embedding network aims to embed the spatio-temporal information into an embedded image, called video snapshot. On the other end, the motion expansion network is proposed to …

A Theory-Driven Self-Labeling Refinement Method For Contrastive Representation Learning, Pan Zhou, Caiming Xiong, Xiao-Tong Yuan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

For an image query, unsupervised contrastive learning labels crops of the same image as positives, and other image crops as negatives. Although intuitive, such a native label assignment strategy cannot reveal the underlying semantic similarity between a query and its positives and negatives, and impairs performance, since some negatives are semantically similar to the query or even share the same semantic class as the query. In this work, we first prove that for contrastive learning, inaccurate label assignment heavily impairs its generalization for semantic instance discrimination, while accurate labels benefit its generalization. Inspired by this theory, we propose a novel …

Hierarchical Control Of Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning Team In Real-Time Strategy (Rts) Games, Weigui Jair Zhou, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan, Darren Wee Sze Ong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Coordinated control of multi-agent teams is an important task in many real-time strategy (RTS) games. In most prior work, micromanagement is the commonly used strategy whereby individual agents operate independently and make their own combat decisions. On the other extreme, some employ a macromanagement strategy whereby all agents are controlled by a single decision model. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical command and control architecture, consisting of a single high-level and multiple low-level reinforcement learning agents operating in a dynamic environment. This hierarchical model enables the low-level unit agents to make individual decisions while taking commands from the high-level …

Imon: Appearance-Based Gaze Tracking System On Mobile Devices, Sinh Huynh, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Jeonggil Ko

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Gaze tracking is a key building block used in many mobile applications including entertainment, personal productivity, accessibility, medical diagnosis, and visual attention monitoring. In this paper, we present iMon, an appearance-based gaze tracking system that is both designed for use on mobile phones and has significantly greater accuracy compared to prior state-of-the-art solutions. iMon achieves this by comprehensively considering the gaze estimation pipeline and then overcoming three different sources of errors. First, instead of assuming that the user's gaze is fixed to a single 2D coordinate, we construct each gaze label using a probabilistic 2D heatmap gaze representation input to …

Spurring Digital Transformation In Singapore's Legal Industry, Xin Juan Chua, Steven M. Miller

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

COVID-19 has transformed the way we live and work. It has caused the processes and operations of businesses and organisations to be restructured, as well as transformed business models. A 2020 McKinsey Global survey reported that companies all over the world claim they have accelerated the digitalisation of their customer and supply-chain interactions, as well as their internal operations, by three to four years. They also said they thought the share of digital or digitally enabled products in their portfolios has advanced by seven years. While technology transformation is not new to the legal profession, COVID-19 has cemented the importance …

Hrpdf: A Software-Based Heterogeneous Redundant Proactive Defense Framework For Programmable Logic Controller, Ke Liu, Jing-Yi Wang, Qiang Wei, Zhen-Yong Zhang, Jun Sun, Rong-Kuan Ma, Rui-Long Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) play a critical role in many industrial control systems, yet face increasingly serious cyber threats. In this paper, we propose a novel PLC-compatible software-based defense mechanism, called Heterogeneous Redundant Proactive Defense Framework (HRPDF). We propose a heterogeneous PLC architecture in HRPDF, including multiple heterogeneous, equivalent, and synchronous runtimes, which can thwart multiple types of attacks against PLC without the need of external devices. To ensure the availability of PLC, we also design an inter-process communication algorithm that minimizes the overhead of HRPDF. We implement a prototype system of HRPDF and test it in a real-world PLC …

In recent decades, mountain glaciers have experienced the impact of climate change in the form of accelerated glacier retreat and other glacier-related hazards such as mass wasting and glacier lake outburst floods. Since there are wide-ranging societal consequences of glacier retreat and hazards, monitoring these glaciers as accurately and repeatedly as possible is important. However, the accurate glacier boundary, especially the debriscovered glacier (DCG) boundary, which is one of the primary inputs in many glacier analyses, remains a challenge even after many years of research using conventional remote sensing methods or machine-learning methods. The GlacierNet, a deep-learning-based approach, utilized the …

Training Wheels For Web Search: Multi-Perspective Learning To Rank To Support Children's Information Seeking In The Classroom, Garrett Allen

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Bicycle design has not changed for a long time, as they are well-crafted for those that possess the skills to ride, i.e., adults. Those learning to ride, however, often need additional support in the form of training wheels. Searching for information on the Web is much like riding a bicycle, where modern search engines (the bicycle) are optimized for general use and adult users, but lack the functionality to support non-traditional audiences and environments. In this thesis, we introduce a set of training wheels in the form of a learning to rank model as augmentation for standard search engines to …

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Through the operation of a molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) machine, I worked on developing the homoepitaxy of high quality InAs with a (111)A crystallographic orientation. By tuning substrate temperature, we obtained a transition from a 2D island growth mode to step- ow growth. Optimized MBE parameters (substrate temperature = 500 °C, growth rate = 0.12 ML/s and V/III ratio ⩾ 40) lead to growth of extremely smooth InAs(111)A films, free from hillocks and other 3D surface imperfections. We see a correlation between InAs surface smoothness and optical quality, as measured by photoluminescence spectroscopy. This work establishes InAs(111)A as a platform …

Fair And Efficient Consensus Protocols For Secure Blockchain Applications, Golam Dastoger Bashar

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

In blockchain technology, consensus protocols serve as mechanisms to reach agreements among a distributed network of nodes. In this work, we propose three novel protocols for permissioned, healthcare, and supply chain blockchain.

(1) Proof of Queue (PoQ), for private blockchains, combines the lottery strategy of PoET with a specialized round-robin algorithm where each node has an equal chance to become a leader with equal access. PoQ is relatively scalable without any collision. Like PoET, PoQ uses Intel SGX, a Trusted Execution Environment, to generate a secure random waiting time to choose a leader and fairly distribute the leadership role to …

Exploring Hydrologic Responses To Different Wildfire Spatial Patterns Through The Lens Of Computational Modeling, Luke M. Telfer Dec 2021

Exploring Hydrologic Responses To Different Wildfire Spatial Patterns Through The Lens Of Computational Modeling, Luke M. Telfer

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Severe wildfire disturbances are becoming increasingly common in high-elevation forests of the western United States. These fires alter watershed hydrologic processes, threatening critical downstream water resources and aquatic ecosystems. However, watershed-scale postfire hydrologic responses and water balance changes are highly uncertain. While postfire effects on individual processes such as runoff, infiltration, evapotranspiration, and snow dynamics are relatively well known, the role of wildfire spatial patterns in governing hydrologic connectivity and interactions between water balance components is poorly understood due to challenges associated with measuring and comparing fires at large scales. This thesis aims to examine pattern-related postfire interactions between various …
