Topological Terms And Diffeomorphism Anomalies In Fluid Dynamics And Sigma Models, V. Parameswaran Nair Jan 2021

Topological Terms And Diffeomorphism Anomalies In Fluid Dynamics And Sigma Models, V. Parameswaran Nair

Publications and Research

The requirement of diffeomorphism symmetry for the target space can lead to anomalous commutators for the energy-momentum tensor for sigma models and for fluid dynamics, if certain topological terms are added to the action. We analyze several examples . A particular topological term is shown to lead to the known effective hydrodynamics of a dense collection of vortices, i.e. the vortex fluid theory in 2+1 dimensions. The possibility of a similar vortex fluid in 3+1 dimensions, as well as a fluid of knots and links, with possible extended diffeomorphism algebras is also discussed.

Origin And Distribution Of Diffuse Soil Co2 Gas Emissions Across Turrialba And Irazú Volcanoes, Costa Rica, Katie Nelson Jan 2021

Origin And Distribution Of Diffuse Soil Co2 Gas Emissions Across Turrialba And Irazú Volcanoes, Costa Rica, Katie Nelson

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

We characterized large-scale volatile emissions across the summit and flanks of the actively degassing Turrialba volcano, Costa Rica, using soil gas flux measurements and 13C isotopes. The objectives of this study were the following: 1) to monitor changes in the magmatic activity and identify source contributions over Turrialba using measurements of CO2 soil gas emissions since the volcano last erupted in 2014-2015, and 2) to identify the location and extent of magma at depth, and the structures that allow gas transport to the surface. Degassing at the summit is concentrated along one normal fault lineament, the trace of …

Gas And Heat Fluxes During Multiple Effusive Eruptions Of Piton De La Fournaise (Réunion) And Their Implications For Magmatic Processes, Pauline Verdurme

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This study investigates five eruptions with different temporal trends of erupted mass and sulfur dioxide (SO2) at Piton de la Fournaise (La Réunion). We acquired the daily SO2 emissions from three ultraviolet (UV) satellite instruments (the Ozone Monitoring Instrument [OMI], the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite [OMPS] and the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument [TROPOMI]). The Time-Averaged-Lava-Discharge Rate (TADR) has been obtained from two automatic systems: MIROVA and MODVOLC. Assuming that the lava volumes measured in the field are the most accurate, MIROVA gives the best estimation among all the methods investigated. It has also been demonstrated that a petrological approach …

Stellarator Optimization With Poloidal Field Coils, Haley Wilson, Andrew Ware, Aaron Bader, Chris Hegna Jan 2021

Stellarator Optimization With Poloidal Field Coils, Haley Wilson, Andrew Ware, Aaron Bader, Chris Hegna

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Stellarators are devices that use magnetic fields to optimize the conditions needed for plasmas to undergo fusion. Unlike tokamaks, stellarators do not rely on a plasma current but can produce a helical magnetic field using only external coils. In a stellarator, the coils surrounding the plasma are called modular coils and those that follow the plasma are called poloidal field coils. Modular coils can be difficult to build if they are too complex. An effort is underway to develop coil conditions that meet both physics and engineering constraints. The FOCUS code was developed to flexibly optimize stellarator coil configurations [C. …

Monitoring Agns With H-Beta Asymmetry: Markarian 841, Samuel J. Schonsberg Jan 2021

Monitoring Agns With H-Beta Asymmetry: Markarian 841, Samuel J. Schonsberg

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Quasars are among the most luminous objects in the Universe, and the mechanism behind their luminosity was shrouded in mystery decades after their discovery. Since then, we have found that these objects are active galactic nuclei (AGN), which are powered by actively-feeding super massive black holes at the center of a galaxy. But we still know fairly little about the structure and motion of the material surrounding active super massive black holes, and most of these objects are not resolvable by conventional observations. We use a technique called reverberation mapping, which is traditionally used only as a mass determination …

Analyzing The Multipath Of Gps Time Series To Study Snow Properties, Ashlesha Khatiwada

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Thousands of Global Positioning System (GNSS) receivers worldwide record signals sent by satellites to infer how each receiver (and the ground they are attached to) moves over time. The motion of GNSS receivers is used for many purposes, including studying tectonic deformation and changes in Earth's shape caused by surface loading. In this project, reflected wave arrivals contained within the multipath signal of GNSS time series are extracted and analyzed to advance understanding of snow properties in mountainous regions of Montana/Idaho, USA. Analyzing reflected signals in GNSS series has the potential to reveal properties of local snowpack, such as height, …

Elementary College Geometry (2021 Ed.), Henry Africk Jan 2021

Elementary College Geometry (2021 Ed.), Henry Africk

Open Educational Resources

This text is intended for a brief introductory course in plane geometry. It covers the topics from elementary geometry that are most likely to be required for more advanced mathematics courses. The only prerequisite is a semester of algebra. The emphasis is on applying basic geometric principles to the numerical solution of problems. For this purpose the number of theorems and definitions is kept small. Proofs are short and intuitive, mostly in the style of those found in a typical trigonometry or precalculus text. There is little attempt to teach theorem proving or formal methods of reasoning. However the topics …

Development And Implementation Of A Pressure-Temperature Control System For The Physical Vapor Deposition Of Copper And Niobium From A Molybdenum Filament In The Development Of Superconducting 3d Printed Rf Cavity Particle Accelerators, Chandler J. Fleuette

Honors Theses and Capstones

This report covers the development of the pressure-temperature control system used in the production of small superconducting RF cavities for particle accelerators. To test the validity of the created program, a model for the process was created and tested. The model was used to fine tune the control system before integrating it into the lab. The end goal of the control system is to measure the pressure inside of a deposition vacuum chamber, convert that pressure to a temperature, and use that temperature in tandem with a PID controller to control the current passing though a molybdenum filament which is …

Conservation, Sharks, And The Tragedy Of The Commons: Achieving Human-Nature Holism, Fiona Melady Jan 2021

Conservation, Sharks, And The Tragedy Of The Commons: Achieving Human-Nature Holism, Fiona Melady

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Environmental ethics originates from the idea that the relationship between humans and non-human nature should be considered morally. How we deal with environmental issues depends on our perception of human-environment relationships. Many view nature as something separate from themselves to own, use, and exploit for human benefit; others view nature as something of which humans are a part and having an intrinsic value aside from practicality or usefulness. This thesis examines human-environment relationships through anthropocentrism and ecocentrism and advocates for balancing the two perspectives. Furthermore, this thesis examines the importance of marine environmental conservation, particularly sharks, and how transitioning towards …

Privacy-Preserving Non-Participatory Surveillance System For Covid-19-Like Pandemics, Mahmoud Nabil, Ahmed Sherif, Mohamed Mahmoud, Waleed Alsmary, Maazen Alsabaan

Faculty Publications

COVID-19 pandemic has revealed a pressing need for an effective surveillance system to control the spread of infection. However, the existing systems are run by the people’s smartphones and without a strong participation from the people, the systems become ineffective. Moreover, these systems can be misused to spy on people and breach their privacy. Due to recent privacy breaches, people became anxious about their privacy, and without privacy reassurance, the people may not accept the systems. In this paper, we propose a non-participatory privacy-preserving surveillance system for COVID-19-like pandemics. The system aims to control the spread of COVID-19 infection without …

Policy Interactions In Large-Scale Marine Protected Areas, Rebecca L. Gruby, Noella J. Gray, Luke Fairbanks, Elizabeth Havice, Lisa M. Campbell, Alan Friedlander, Kirsten L.L. Oleson, King Sam, Lillian Mitchell, Quentin Hanich Jan 2021

Policy Interactions In Large-Scale Marine Protected Areas, Rebecca L. Gruby, Noella J. Gray, Luke Fairbanks, Elizabeth Havice, Lisa M. Campbell, Alan Friedlander, Kirsten L.L. Oleson, King Sam, Lillian Mitchell, Quentin Hanich

Faculty Publications

Large-scale marine protected areas (LSMPAs) have proliferated in recent years, now accounting for most of the world's MPA coverage. However, little is known about LSMPA outcomes and the factors that affect them. Here we argue that policy interactions—the cumulative effect of co-existing policies for an issue and/or geographical area—can play a critical, but under-recognized, role in influencing LSMPA design and outcomes. We analyze interactions between national LSMPAs within Palau and Kiribati, and regional fisheries management established by the Nauru Agreement to show how policy actors can account for policy interactions in LSMPA design, and to demonstrate the profound influence that …

Commuting Perturbations Of Operator Equations, Xue Xu, Jiu Ding Jan 2021

Commuting Perturbations Of Operator Equations, Xue Xu, Jiu Ding

Faculty Publications

Let X be a Banach space and let T: XX be a bounded linear operator with closed range. We study a class of commuting perturbations of the corresponding operator equation, using the concept of the spectral radius of a bounded linear operator. Our results extend the classic perturbation theorem for invertible operators and its generalization for arbitrary operators under the commutability assumption.

A New Gauss--Newton-Like Method For Nonlinear Equations, Haijun Wang, Qi Wang Jan 2021

A New Gauss--Newton-Like Method For Nonlinear Equations, Haijun Wang, Qi Wang

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, a new Gauss-Newton-like method that is based on a rational approximation model with linear numerator is proposed for solving nonlinear equations. The new method revises the $J_k^\mathrm{T}J_k$ matrix by a rank-one matrix at each iteration. Furthermore, we design a new iterative algorithm for nonlinear equations and prove that it is locally q-quadratically convergent. The numerical results show that the new proposed method has better performance than the classical Gauss-Newton method.

Numerical Investigation Of Viscous Effects On The Nonlinear Burgers Equation, Muhammad Imran Khan, Abdul Rauf, Abdullah Shah Jan 2021

Numerical Investigation Of Viscous Effects On The Nonlinear Burgers Equation, Muhammad Imran Khan, Abdul Rauf, Abdullah Shah

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

This research article presents the numerical solution of the viscous Burgers equation. The diagonally implicit fractional step $\theta$ (DIFST) scheme is used for the time discretization and the space derivative is discretized by the conforming finite element method with quadrilateral mesh. The viscosity effect on the shock wave is calculated with an estimation of the $L_2$ error. For comparison of different time discretization schemes, three test problems are computed. The stability and accuracy of the schemes are given by estimating the $L_2$ error norm. Numerical simulation for one- and two-dimensional problems are given and illustrated graphically. The effect of the …

Decompositions Of Semigroups, Rida E. Zenab Jan 2021

Decompositions Of Semigroups, Rida E. Zenab

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this article we discuss the factorisations of semigroups and monoids in the context of direct, semidirect and Zappa-Szep products addressing the question of uniqueness. An equivalence between external and internal Zappa-Szep product of groups and monoids is known, but no such correspondence exists for semigroups in general. We prove the equivalence between external and internal Zappa-Szep product of semigroups subject to certain conditions in this article. We end with some illustrative examples of the Zappa-Szep product of the bisimple inverse monoids.

Environmental Noise In Advanced Ligo Detectors, P. Nguyen, R. M. S. Schofield, A. Effler, C. Austin, V. B. Adya, M. Ball, S. Banagiri, K. Banowetz, C. Billman, Karla E. Ramirez

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

The sensitivity of the advanced LIGO detectors to gravitational waves can be affected by environmental disturbances external to the detectors themselves. Since the transition from the former initial LIGO phase, many improvements have been made to the equipment and techniques used to investigate these environmental effects. These methods have aided in tracking down and mitigating noise sources throughout the first three observing runs of the advanced detector era, keeping the ambient contribution of environmental noise below the background noise levels of the detectors. In this paper we describe the methods used and how they have led to the mitigation of …

On The Improvements Of Boundary-Layer Representation For High Resolution Weather Forecasting In Costal-Urban Environments, David Melecio-Vazquez Jan 2021

On The Improvements Of Boundary-Layer Representation For High Resolution Weather Forecasting In Costal-Urban Environments, David Melecio-Vazquez

Dissertations and Theses

As large urban centers around the world become more densely populated, the global conversion from natural to man-made land surfaces will only increase. These land-use changes affect the urban surface energy budget which in turn changes the structure of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) above. With current high-performance computing systems, meteorological and built environment information can be better utilized to quantify the anthropogenic effects of these modifications. Although these systems have improved forecasting near-surface weather conditions, a comprehensive approach to represent urban impacts on the PBL is still limited. Improved PBL representation can lead to better weather and climate forecasts, …

The Effect Of Agkistrodon Contortrix And Crotalus Horridus Venom Toxicity On Strike Locations With Live Prey, Chase Giese Jan 2021

The Effect Of Agkistrodon Contortrix And Crotalus Horridus Venom Toxicity On Strike Locations With Live Prey, Chase Giese

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

This paper aims to uncover if there is a significant difference in the strike location of snake species that have different values of LD50% venom. It is thought that most snakes strike their prey in the anterior (head) area in order for their venom to work quicker in killing them. Venom toxicity is measured by its LD50% value, which is the amount of venom, in mg/kg, to kill 50% of a test population. The Copperhead has an LD50% value of 10.9 mg/kg, and the Timber Rattlesnake has an LD50% value of 1.64 mg/kg. The hypothesis was that if venom toxicity …

Regenerative Agriculture’S Potential Carbon Storage In Nebraska Soils, Jenna Mccoy Jan 2021

Regenerative Agriculture’S Potential Carbon Storage In Nebraska Soils, Jenna Mccoy

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

This meta-analysis investigates the possible carbon sequestration of no-till and cover crop practices on Nebraska farmlands. These management practices are part of regenerative agriculture, a farming method designed to mitigate and adapt to climate change. As climate change is expected to significantly reduce yields in Nebraska, sequestering carbon in farmlands offers a way to adapt to climate change impacts and lower the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. However, changing management practices is difficult and is driven primarily by economics. This study aims to determine how much carbon these practices can sequester in Nebraska soil each year by evaluating …

Designing A Mobile App And Online Directory To Increase The Visibility Of Environmental Organizations In A Community, Kayla Vondracek Jan 2021

Designing A Mobile App And Online Directory To Increase The Visibility Of Environmental Organizations In A Community, Kayla Vondracek

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Concern for environmental degradation, natural resource depletion, and public health has long been a necessary part of a strongly developed and sophisticated society. Humans are primarily responsible for the depletion of the natural environment as it supplies the commodities required to ensure the long-term survival of civilizations. As cultures continue to evolve, so does the practice of land stewardship and protection of resources. With the necessary expansion of industry and housing needed to support a rising human population, the management of natural resources, pollution control, and the environment has become increasingly important to people worldwide. Bernstein and Szuster (2019) suggest …

Sparking Awareness In Lincoln Electronic Waste Trends And Habits: A Student Behavioral Analysis, Zowie Vincent Jan 2021

Sparking Awareness In Lincoln Electronic Waste Trends And Habits: A Student Behavioral Analysis, Zowie Vincent

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Nebraska is recognized as one of the few states that have not established any laws or practices managing electronic waste. Along with no e-waste management laws, there is also a lack of studies discussing the behavioral trends and habits towards electronic devices and how to dispose of them once they are unable to function. Continuing to ignore the choice of recycling electronics results in further damage towards the environment, human and animal health, as well as an economic opportunity of a growing market. This study focuses on the trends and habits of electronic consumption, usage, and disposal amongst students at …

The Relationship Between Time And Plant Diversity In Prairie Restorations Within The Prairie Corridor On Haines Branch, Elizabeth Park Jan 2021

The Relationship Between Time And Plant Diversity In Prairie Restorations Within The Prairie Corridor On Haines Branch, Elizabeth Park

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

This study focuses on better understanding the relationship between the age of prairie restorations and their plant diversity. The study looks specifically at the prairie restorations within the Prairie Corridor on Haines Branch, located west of Lincoln, Nebraska. The data gathered from these restorations show a positive correlation between age and native plant diversity. This diversity indicates that the restorations are fulfilling their purpose by bringing native prairie plants back to the area. From the data I came to these four conclusions, 1) Because the study only included two restorations greater than 10 years old, it is unclear if the …

How Is Remote Sensing Being Used To Prevent Wildfires Today?, Luke Lauby

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Wildfires frequencies and severities are on the rise. To properly combat and contain them, artificial intelligence should be utilized. An in-depth literature review was conducted in order to evaluate the current state of artificial intelligence specifically relating to wildfire prevention and suppression efforts. The findings in this research sheds further light on the helpful implications that these technologies (both satellites and UAVs) do, and can have on wildfire suppression. If further adopted in wildfire suppression efforts, artificial intelligence can play a more effective role. Through this, fires can become better prevented, more controllable, and better understood using modern technology.
