The Need To Incorporate Communities In Compartmental Models, Michael J. Kane, Owais Gilani Jan 2021

The Need To Incorporate Communities In Compartmental Models, Michael J. Kane, Owais Gilani

Faculty Journal Articles

Tian et al. provide a framework for assessing population- level interventions of disease outbreaks through the construction of counterfactuals in a large-scale, natural experiment assessing the efficacy of mild, but early interventions compared to delayed interventions. The technique is applied to the recent SARS-CoV-2 outbreak with the population of Shenzhen, China acting as the mild-but-early treatment group and a combination of several US counties resembling Shenzhen but enacting a delayed intervention acting as the control. To help further the development of this framework and identify an avenue for further enhancement, we focus on the use and potential limitations of compartmental …

The Effectiveness Of An Artificial Floating Wetland To Remove Nutrients In An Urban Stream: A Pilot-Study In The Chicago River, Chicago, Il Usa, Eric W. Peterson, Phil Nicodemus, Emmett Spooner, Abigail Heath

Faculty Publications-- Geography, Geology, and the Environment

Ever expanding urbanized landscapes are increasingly impacting streams that run through them. Among other stressors, urban streams often are host to elevated concentrations of nutrients, salts, and heavy metals. The pollutants, coupled with high temperatures, are drivers of ecosystem degradation in urban streams. The installation of artificial floating wetlands (AFWs) has been successful in mitigating the effects of urbanization in lakes and wastewater treatment ponds, but rarely have they been tested in streams. This pilot-study examined the ability of an AFW to improve water quality in an urban stream. The small, 90 m2 AFW was installed to improve the aquatic …

A Computational Study Of Properties Of Core-Shell Nanowire Heterostructures Using Density Functional Theory, Sandip Aryal

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Nanoscale systems, especially the one-dimensional semiconducting nanowires, have been the subject of immense research interests due to their potential applications in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics that demand cheaper, smaller, faster, and energy-efficient components. In particular, the core/shell nanostructures, in which the core materials are shielded by materials with larger bandgap called shell, have been shown to enhance the performance of field effect transistors (FETs), solar cells, light emitting diodes (LEDs), and thermoelectric devices due to their outstanding features like valence band offset between the core and shell, higher stability against oxidation, reduction in the surface trap states, diminished nonradiative recombination processes, …

Aviation Human-In-The-Loop Simulation: Best Practices For Subjective Performance Measurement, John Kleber, Beth Blickensderfer Jan 2021

Aviation Human-In-The-Loop Simulation: Best Practices For Subjective Performance Measurement, John Kleber, Beth Blickensderfer

Aviation Weather Training Research

Subjective performance measurements are a useful tool for researchers and instructors to evaluate tasks that are difficult to quantify with objective data pulled from a simulator or the physiological data of pilots. Subjective performance measurements are non-intrusive measures typically conducted by human raters. Some recommendations for utilizing subjective measures include reducing the workload of the human raters, concealing the aim of the experiment from participants, utilizing multiple raters to evaluate each participant, providing raters with proper training, developing error-resistant rater forms and, including both subjective and objective measures when possible.

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

We congratulate Kolaczyk, Wright, and Yajima on their innovative statistics practicum that places “practice” at the center of data science education (Kolaczyk et al., 2021, this issue). Their year-long practicum course focuses on the data science life cycle with engagement with external partners and university consulting projects. We agree that training postgraduates in practice needs to be foregrounded in the curriculum in order for students to develop necessary depth in data science practice.

Phylogenomics Reveals Ancient And Contemporary Gene Flow Contributing To The Evolutionary History Of Sea Ducks (Tribe Mergini), Philip Lavretsky, Robert E. Wilson, Sandra L. Talbot, Sarah A. Sonsthagen Jan 2021

Phylogenomics Reveals Ancient And Contemporary Gene Flow Contributing To The Evolutionary History Of Sea Ducks (Tribe Mergini), Philip Lavretsky, Robert E. Wilson, Sandra L. Talbot, Sarah A. Sonsthagen

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Insight into complex evolutionary histories continues to build through broad comparative phylogenomic and population genomic studies. In particular, there is a need to understand the extent and scale that gene flow contributes to standing genomic diversity and the role introgression has played in evolutionary processes such as hybrid speciation. Here, we investigate the evolutionary history of the Mergini tribe (sea ducks) by coupling multi-species comparisons with phylogenomic analyses of thousands of nuclear ddRAD-seq loci, including Z-sex chromosome and autosomal linked loci, and the mitogenome assayed across all extant sea duck species in North America. All sea duck species are strongly …

Deterministic And Statistical Methods For Inverse Problems With Partial Data, Yanfang Liu Jan 2021

Deterministic And Statistical Methods For Inverse Problems With Partial Data, Yanfang Liu

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Inverse problems with partial data have many applications in science and engineering. They are more challenging than the complete data cases since the lack of data increases ill-posedness and nonlinearity. The use of only deterministic or statistical methods might not provide satisfactory results. We propose to combine the deterministic and statistical methods to treat such inverse problems. The thesis is organized as follows.

In Chapter 1, we briefly introduce the inverse problems and their applications. The classical deterministic methods and Bayesian inversion are discussed. The chapter is concluded with a summary of contributions.

Chapter 2 considers the reconstruction of the …

Efficient Modeling Of Random Sampling-Based Lru Cache, Junyao Yang Jan 2021

Efficient Modeling Of Random Sampling-Based Lru Cache, Junyao Yang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The Miss Ratio Curve (MRC) is an important metric and effective tool for caching system performance prediction and optimization. Since the Least Recently Used (LRU) replacement policy is the de facto policy for many existing caching systems, most previous studies on efficient MRC construction are predominantly focused on the LRU replacement policy. Recently, the random sampling-based replacement mechanism, as opposed to replacement relying on the rigid LRU data structure, gains more popularity due to its lightweight and flexibility. To approximate LRU, at replacement times, the system randomly selects K objects and replaces the least recently used object among the sample. …

Evans, Michelle Wurch, Koichi Yamaguchi, Peter A. Dowben, Ludwig Bartels, Talat S. Rahman, Richard G. Blair

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Homogenous single-layer MoS2 films coated with sub-single layer amounts of gold are found to isolate the reaction of methanol with carbon monoxide, the fundamental step toward higher alcohols, from an array of possible surface reactions. Active surfaces were prepared from homogenous single-layer MoS2 films coated with sub-single layer amounts of gold. These gold atoms formed clusters on the MoS2 surface. A gas mixture of carbon monoxide (CO) and methanol (CH3OH) was partially converted to acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) under mild process conditions (308 kPa and 393 K). This carbonylation of methanol to a C2 species …

Griffiths-Like Phase In Manganese Intercalated Tantalum Disulfide And The 3-Dimensional Ising Model, Paul White

Honors Program Theses

Transition metal dichalcogenides have gained increasing interest due to properties that make them highly attractive for fundamental studies of novel physical phenomena and for applications ranging from nanoelectronics and nanophotonics to sensing and actuation at the nanoscale.[1] The material described in this work is composed of layers of tantalum sulfide between which manganese was deposited. The number of manganese atoms per tantalum atom is called the concentration, x. In the research that was conducted for this thesis, the Griffiths Phase of crystalline bulk Mn0.23TaS2 and the 3-dimensional Ising model was investigated.

Critical Phenomena In The Gravitational Collapse Of Electromagnetic Dipole And Quadrupole Waves, Maria F. Perez Mendoza Jan 2021

Critical Phenomena In The Gravitational Collapse Of Electromagnetic Dipole And Quadrupole Waves, Maria F. Perez Mendoza

Honors Projects

We report on critical phenomena in the gravitational collapse of electromagnetic waves. Generalizing earlier results that focused on dipole electromagnetic waves, we here compare with quadrupole waves in axisymmetry. We perform numerical simulations of dipole and quadrupole wave initial data, fine-tuning both sets of data to the onset of black hole formation in order to study the critical solution and related critical phenomena. We observe that different multipole moments have different symmetries, indicating that the critical solution for electromagnetic waves cannot be unique, at least not globally. This is confirmed in our numerical simulations: while dipole data lead to a …

Algorhythms: Leveraging Markov Chain-Based Generation Of Functional Harmonies With User-Defined Musical Corpus As A Compositional Tool, Coleman Brockmeier Jan 2021

Algorhythms: Leveraging Markov Chain-Based Generation Of Functional Harmonies With User-Defined Musical Corpus As A Compositional Tool, Coleman Brockmeier

Honors Projects

Music forms the soundtrack to daily life and serves as an important cultural marker for people around the world. As the world becomes digitized and connected via the internet, the opportunity is increasingly accessible for anyone to share music with the world and to create chart-topping music that defines the cultural vernacular. Many prominent producers have little to no formal musical training, especially in Western music theory. As a result, loop-based music dominates the lists of most-played music on the radio and streaming services, often not deviating from basic functional harmony. With this project, I have created a compositional tool …

A Bayesian Hierarchical Mixture Model With Continuous-Time Markov Chains To Capture Bumblebee Foraging Behavior, Max Thrush Hukill Jan 2021

A Bayesian Hierarchical Mixture Model With Continuous-Time Markov Chains To Capture Bumblebee Foraging Behavior, Max Thrush Hukill

Honors Projects

The standard statistical methodology for analyzing complex case-control studies in ethology is often limited by approaches that force researchers to model distinct aspects of biological processes in a piecemeal, disjointed fashion. By developing a hierarchical Bayesian model, this work demonstrates that statistical inference in this context can be done using a single coherent framework. To do this, we construct a continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC) to model bumblebee foraging behavior. To connect the experimental design with the CTMC, we employ a mixture model controlled by a logistic regression on the two-factor design matrix. We then show how to infer these model …

On The Dirichlet L-Functions And The L-Functions Of Cusp Forms, Nawapan Wattanawanichkul Jan 2021

On The Dirichlet L-Functions And The L-Functions Of Cusp Forms, Nawapan Wattanawanichkul

Honors Projects

The main objects of our study are L-functions, which are meromorphic functions on the complex plane that analytically continue from the series of the form \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{a_n}{n^s}, where {a_n} is a sequence of complex numbers. In particular, we are interested in two families of L-functions: ''The Dirichlet L-functions" and ''the L-functions of cusp forms." The former refers to the L-functions whose a_n's are determined by Dirichlet characters, whereas cusp forms determine the latter. We begin our study with the celebrated Riemann zeta function, the simplest Dirichlet L-function, and discuss some of its well-known properties: the Euler product, analytic continuation, functional …

Cosmological Gravitational Waves: Refining A General Rule Of Thumb For Reheating, David Zhou Jan 2021

Cosmological Gravitational Waves: Refining A General Rule Of Thumb For Reheating, David Zhou

Honors Projects

There are predictions for cosmological gravitational wave backgrounds from reheating based on various models. But, these predictions do not address the question of how an observed spectrum relates back to an unknown model or parameter. Given this problem, we have numerically and analytically investigated a variety of chaotic inflation models and their gravitational wave spectra. In doing so, we found a power law relation between gravitational wave peak frequency and an underlying chaotic inflation parameter. We found a two-class amplitude puzzle related to how strongly a matter producing field is coupled to the inflaton. We estimated the parameter describing how …
