Wind Turbine Parameter Calibration Using Deep Learning Approaches, Rebecca Mccubbin Jan 2021

Wind Turbine Parameter Calibration Using Deep Learning Approaches, Rebecca Mccubbin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The inertia and damping coefficients are critical to understanding the workings of a wind turbine, especially when it is in a transient state. However, many manufacturers do not provide this information about their turbines, requiring people to estimate these values themselves. This research seeks to design a multilayer perceptron (MLP) that can accurately predict the inertia and damping coefficients using the power data from a turbine during a transient state. To do this, a model of a wind turbine was built in Matlab, and a simulation of a three-phase fault was used to collect realistic fault data to input into …

Binary State Distance Vector Routing: A Protocol For Near-Unicast Forwarding In Partitioned Networks, Ammar Farooq Jan 2021

Binary State Distance Vector Routing: A Protocol For Near-Unicast Forwarding In Partitioned Networks, Ammar Farooq

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Ad-hoc networks are highly dynamic and can be disconnected/partitioned during their operations, particularly in delay-tolerant networks (DTNs) where infrastructure support is not entirely available. Even after several decades of research on DTN routing, there is still a need for routing protocols that operate effectively in network environments where disconnections, delays, and resource scarcity are common. Traditionally, DTN routing protocols use an epidemic routing strategy, where multiple copies of packets get forwarded to increase network reachability. However, these flooding-based strategies are seldom suitable in resource-constrained network settings. Other prominent DTN routing designs use distance vectors (DVs) that summarize global network reachability …

Unsupervised Meta-Learning, Siavash Khodadadeh Jan 2021

Unsupervised Meta-Learning, Siavash Khodadadeh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Deep learning has achieved classification performance matching or exceeding the human one, as long as plentiful labeled training samples are available. However, the performance on few-shot learning, where the classifier had seen only several or possibly only one sample of the class is still significantly below human performance. Recently, a type of algorithm called meta-learning achieved impressive performance for few-shot learning. However, meta-learning requires a large dataset of labeled tasks closely related to the test task. The work described in this dissertation outlines techniques that significantly reduce the need for expensive and scarce labeled data in the meta-learning phase. Our …

Water Quality Monitoring In The Upper Poteau River Watershed, Abbie Lasater, Brian E. Haggard

Technical Reports

The Upper Poteau River Watershed (UPRW) has been listed as a priority watershed in Arkansas since 1998 due to nutrient and sediment enrichment from point and nonpoint sources (NPS). According to the Arkansas NPS pollution management plan, the goals for the UPRW are to reduce pollutant levels that will restore all designates uses and target subwatersheds where implementation of management practices can have the greatest impact. Over the last several years, many 319(h) projects have been implemented and point sources have been reduced in order to improve water quality in the UPRW. The purpose of this study was to monitor …

Dynamics Of A Swept Source Laser Under External Injection, Uday Bangavadi Munivenkatappa Jan 2021

Dynamics Of A Swept Source Laser Under External Injection, Uday Bangavadi Munivenkatappa

Theses

Swept Sources are lasers with a periodically modulated frequency, over a wide scanning range. They are widely used in Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for medical imaging and metrology. The narrow instantaneous linewidth of a swept source is required for longer OCT imaging depths. The goal of the project is to investigate the mechanism that deteriorates the coherence of a swept-source laser by analyzing its properties under external injection and investigate the possibilities for a phase-locked laser operation, in order to control the coherence properties. The laser under study was a semiconductor ring fiber-based cavity laser, incorporating a tunable narrow transmission …

Supercritical And Subcritical Pitchfork Bifurcations In A Buckling Problem For A Graphene Sheet Between Two Rigid Substrates, Jake Grdadolnik Jan 2021

Supercritical And Subcritical Pitchfork Bifurcations In A Buckling Problem For A Graphene Sheet Between Two Rigid Substrates, Jake Grdadolnik

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In this paper we study a model of the buckling of a sheet of graphene between two rigid substrates. We seek to understand the buckling of the sheet as the substrate separation is varied with a fixed load on each end of the sheet. We write down the expression for total energy of the system and from it derive a 2-point nonlinear boundary-value problem whose solutions are equilibrium configurations of the sheet. We cannot get an explicit solution. Instead, we perform a bifurcation analysis by using asymptotics to approximate solutions on the bifurcating branches near the bifurcation points. The bifurcating …

Recent Flooding Events On The Chagrin And Cuyahoga Rivers, Ohio, Kayley Martin Jan 2021

Recent Flooding Events On The Chagrin And Cuyahoga Rivers, Ohio, Kayley Martin

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

From the 1910s through the 1980s, the number of intense daily precipitation events in the United States remained constant, however, since the 1980s there has been an increasing trend in intense single-day precipitation events (U.S Environmental Protection Agency, 2016). One outcome of intense precipitation events is river flooding, particularly in the upper Midwest region where floods have increased in magnitude and frequency (U.S Environmental Protection Agency, 2016). In this thesis project, recent flooding history on the Chagrin and Cuyahoga Rivers in Ohio was studied to expand on previous research that observed an abrupt increase in high magnitude flood events on …

Online Marketplace, Devin Hopkins Jan 2021

Online Marketplace, Devin Hopkins

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The goal of this project was to create a website that helped a common person search for items from online marketplaces, such as eBay, Amazon, or Facebook Marketplace. The intention was to ease the burden of needing to search several different websites for the same product. Currently, if a person wants to look for a specific item on multiple different marketplaces, they must go to each marketplace individually and search for it. They must enter their specifications repeatedly and load virtually the same web page multiple times. This project’s goal was to condense that so the user would only have …

Source Code Comment Classification Artificial Intelligence, Cole Sutyak Jan 2021

Source Code Comment Classification Artificial Intelligence, Cole Sutyak

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Source code comment classification is an important problem for future machine learning solutions. In particular, supervised machine learning solutions that have largely subjective data labels but are difficult to obtain the labels for. Machine learning problems are problems largely because of a lack of data. In machine learning solutions, it is better to have a large amount of mediocre data than it is to have a small amount of good data. While the mediocre data might not produce the best accuracy, it produces the best results because there is much more to learn from the problem.

In this project, data …

Comparing Capabilities Of Shewanella Oneidensis Mr-1 And The Microbial Community Of Iron Caves To Reduce Fe(Iii), Aaron Douglas Pham Jan 2021

Comparing Capabilities Of Shewanella Oneidensis Mr-1 And The Microbial Community Of Iron Caves To Reduce Fe(Iii), Aaron Douglas Pham

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Caves are generally formed by the erosion and/or dissolution of rock and its subsequent removal by water. Iron ore caves (IOCs) form despite being hosted by relatively insoluble and weathering-resistant rock. Due to the discovery of a microbial community behind the walls of these caves, it was hypothesized that these bacteria could be responsible for speleogenesis. Iron ore exists in an oxidized (Fe(III)) state, but reduced (Fe(II)) form is soluble. It was further reasoned that the bacteria might be able to reduce Fe(III) through direct metabolic activity, which uses iron as an electron acceptor. Here we show that cave microorganisms …

An Enumeration Of Nested Networks, Nathan Cornelius Jan 2021

An Enumeration Of Nested Networks, Nathan Cornelius

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Nested networks have several applications in phylogenetics and electrical circuit theory. In many cases, there may exist more than one distinct network which correctly models a given data set. This proposes a combinatorial problem to determine all possible network solutions. In this paper, we partially solve this problem by developing exponential generating functions which enumerate all 1-nested and 2-nested unicyclic networks. We also describe our procedure to directly count all 1-nested and 2-nested networks and provide all 1-nested networks with 7, 8, and 9 terminal nodes.

Incorporating Animal Movement Into Distance Sampling, R. Glennie, S. T. Buckland, R. Langrock, Tim Gerrodette, Susan Chivers, M. D. Scott Jan 2021

Incorporating Animal Movement Into Distance Sampling, R. Glennie, S. T. Buckland, R. Langrock, Tim Gerrodette, Susan Chivers, M. D. Scott

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Distance sampling is a popular statistical method to estimate the density of wild animal populations. Conventional distance sampling represents animals as fixed points in space that are detected with an unknown probability that depends on the distance between the observer and the animal. Animal movement can cause substantial bias in density estimation. Methods to correct for responsive animal movement exist, but none account for nonresponsive movement independent of the observer. Here, an explicit animal movement model is incorporated into distance sampling, combining distance sampling survey data with animal telemetry data. Detection probability depends on the entire unobserved path the animal …

Natural User Interface Based American Sign Language Tutoring Program, Bryce J. Allen

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed a substantial shortcoming in the modern American educational system: there is a sufficient need for our educators to be trained in the practices required to provide an educational experience for their students that is as effective as in-person instruction. There exist already systems of online instruction for various academic subjects, such as math and the sciences. In the subject of linguistic studies, educational programs have been developed to evaluate student proficiency in both the written and spoken forms of the language in which they are studying. However, there exist few programs that can effectively provide …
