Interactions Between Densely Grafted Molten Polymer Brushes:Scaling Theories Versus Molecular Simulations, Aykut Erbaş Jan 2021

Interactions Between Densely Grafted Molten Polymer Brushes:Scaling Theories Versus Molecular Simulations, Aykut Erbaş

Turkish Journal of Physics

Using molecular dynamics simulations and scaling arguments, we analyzed the interactions between two identical molten polymer brushes intermediately and strongly compressed towards each other at melt conditions. The width of the overlap region, in which monomers of the linear chains composing the two brushes interact, increases as the polymer-grafted surfaces are brought closer. If two-brush coated surfaces are as close as the characteristics size of the grafted chains, the overlap region is directly controlled by intersurface distance. At intermediate compression, the width of the overlap region scales with the end-to-end size of chain sections within the overlap region. This result …

A Numerical Approach To Verify The Reservoir Temperature Of The Afyon Geothermal Fields, Turkey, Özgür Karaoğlu Jan 2021

A Numerical Approach To Verify The Reservoir Temperature Of The Afyon Geothermal Fields, Turkey, Özgür Karaoğlu

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Geothermal energy constitutes an important renewable resource in Turkey that has been extensively utilized for heating buildings, power generation, greenhouse farming and various other industries. One of the most remarkable geothermal locations in Turkey is the low-enthalpy area of Afyon, where five main low-temperature (30-110 °C) geothermal fields are exploited. However, further exploration drilling sites have proven inconclusive, casting doubts on the effective presence of high-temperature geothermal systems in the region. Part of the challenge is that the geometry, size and depth of the heat source of the geothermal system is poorly constrained. It is documented that the Afyon region …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Although destructive earthquakes have not occurred in the instrumental period except for the 30 October 2020 Samos earthquake (Mw = 6.6), the records show that there were significant earthquakes that caused great destruction in İzmir and its surroundings in the historical period. However, it is not yet clear which faults are causative for these earthquakes affecting İzmir and its surroundings. For this purpose, it has been attempted to determine new geological, seismological and environmental data by examining a large number of original sources, records and old international earthquake catalogs, other than the existing national catalogs used in seismicity studies in …

Geothermal Reservoir Rocks Of The Büyük Menderes Graben (Turkey): Stratigraphiccorrelation By A Multiproxy Approach, Dorothee Siefert, Markus Wolfgramm, Thomas Koelbel, Johannes Glodny, Jochen Kolb, Elisabeth Eiche

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

This paper focuses on the correlation of two different marble units from an approximately 3,900 m deep geothermal exploration well (GP-1) in western Turkey by petrographical and geochemical data. Future geothermal exploration drilling in that area will benefit from a better (tectono) stratigraphic correlation and a better definition of the reservoir geometry in the basin. It is an innovative approximation in many settings to correctly correlate marble units without clear stratigraphic markers or fossil record, in particular, when sample material is restricted to cuttings. The most distinctive petrographical and geochemical properties in this study are colour, light transmission along with …

Structural Controls And Hydrogeochemical Properties Of Geothermal Fields In The Vartoregion, East Anatolia, Taygun Uzelli̇, Mehmet Furkan Şener, İskender Dölek, Alper Baba, Hasan Sözbi̇li̇r, Ramazan Kadi̇r Di̇ri̇k

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Varto and the surrounding region have important geothermal fields, developing in strike-slip tectonic setting in East Anatolia, which resulted from the collision of the Arabian and Eurasian plates. The main structural elements in the area are the NE-trending sinistral and NW-trending dextral strike-slip fault segments and N-S trending extension zones. In order to determine fault-controlled geothermal circulation, it is very important to fully characterize the structural elements in these complex environments. The widely distributed volcanic rocks have fracture and crack systems that play an important role in surface infiltration, geothermal fluid, and groundwater circulation. Especially in areas where the fault …

Playing Pong Using Q-Learning, Akash Kumar Jan 2021

Playing Pong Using Q-Learning, Akash Kumar

West Chester University Master’s Theses

This thesis involves the use of a reinforcement learning algorithm (RL) called Q-learning to train a Q-agent to play a game of Pong against a near-perfect opponent. Compared to previously related work which trained Pong RL agents by combining Q-learning with deep learning in an algorithm known as Deep Q-Networks, the work presented in this paper takes advantage of known environment constraints of the custom-made Pong environment to train the agent using one-step Q-learning alone. In addition, the thesis explores ways of making the Q-learning more efficient by converting Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) to Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs), …

Reconstruction of gene regulatory networks (GRNs) is a fundamental aspect of genetic engineering and provides a deeper understanding of the biological processes of an organism. Two methods were implemented to reconstruct the gene regulatory networks of Arabidopsis thaliana under two treatments: methyl jasmonate (MeJa) and salicylic acid (SA). The Joint Reconstruction of multiple Gene Regulatory Networks (JRmGRN) method was utilized to construct a joint network for identifying hub genes common to both conditions in addition to networks specific to each condition. The Differential Network Analysis with False Discover Rate Control method constructed a network of connections unique to only one …

Advancement Of Full-Vector Variable-Temperature Magnetometry For Rock-Magnetic And Paleointensity Applications, Leonid Surovitskii Jan 2021

Advancement Of Full-Vector Variable-Temperature Magnetometry For Rock-Magnetic And Paleointensity Applications, Leonid Surovitskii

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Data on the variation of the direction and strength of Earth’s ancient magnetic field (absolute paleointensity) provide crucial information into the mechanisms of the geodynamo and the Earth’s thermal history. However, the use of conventional methods and instrumentation for absolute paleointensity determination has been hampered by physicochemical alteration of the samples caused by multiple high-temperature cycles and long experiment durations. The reliability and efficiency of the measurement process can be improved by the measurement of the full remanent magnetization vector simultaneously with the temperature cycling of a sample. Such as approach can also substantially expand the scope of materials available …

Physicochemical Properties Of Atmospheric Aerosols And Their Effect On Ice Cloud Formation, Nurun Nahar Lata Jan 2021

Physicochemical Properties Of Atmospheric Aerosols And Their Effect On Ice Cloud Formation, Nurun Nahar Lata

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Atmospheric aerosols play a vital role in the Earth's energy budget-directly by scattering and absorbing solar radiation and indirectly by acting as cloud condensation nuclei and ice-nucleating particles [1, 2]. The cloud formation potential of aerosol is driven by multiple factors, including surface properties, size distribution, composition, mixing state, phase state, and morphology [3]. The interaction of aerosols with clouds alters the aerosol's physicochemical properties. Those properties can also evolve during transport due to atmospheric processing, in turn, affect the aerosol's ice nucleation and cloud formation activities. This thesis presents experimental studies to understand the role of physicochemical properties of …
