The theory of functional approximation has numerous applications in sciences and industry. This thesis focuses on the possible approaches to approximate a continuous function on a compact subset of R2 using a variety of constructions. The results are presented from the following four general topics: polynomials, Fourier series, wavelets, and neural networks. Approximation with polynomials on subsets of R leads to the discussion of the Stone-Weierstrass theorem. Convergence of Fourier series is characterized on the unit circle. Exploiting Context In Linear Influence Games: Improved Algorithms For Model Selection And Performance Evaluation, Daniel Little

In the recent past, extensive experimental works have been performed to predict joint voting outcomes in Congress based on a game-theoretic model of voting behavior known as Linear Influence Games. In this thesis, we improve the model selection and evaluation procedure of these past experiments. First, we implement two methods, Nested Cross-Validation with Tuning (Nested CVT) and Bootstrap Bias Corrected Cross-Validation (BBC-CV), to perform model selection and evaluation with less bias than previous methods. While Nested CVT is a commonly used method, it requires learning a large number of models; BBC-CV is a more recent method boasting less computational cost. …

In the summer of 2022, I worked as a laboratory assistant on a project studying red raspberry fungus and was based at a Washington State University agricultural laboratory. During this internship I worked mostly in the lab and performed a variety of tasks and procedures primarily involving the fungus, Botrytis cinerea. Prior to my employment I set learning targets of improving my lab technique, time management, writing skills, and gaining a better understanding of the research process. Minoritized populations face exclusion across contexts from politics to welfare to medicine. In medicine, exclusion manifests in substantial disparities in practice and in outcome. While these disparities arise from many sources, the interaction between institutions, dominant-group behaviors, and minoritized responses shape the overall pattern and are key to improving it. We apply the theory of exclusion cycles to medical practice, the collection of medical big data, and the development of artificial intelligence in medicine. These cycles are both self-reinforcing and other-reinforcing, leading to dismayingly persistent exclusion. The interactions between such cycles offer lessons and prescriptions for effective policy.

Explicit Examples Of Constant Curvature Surfaces In The Supersymmetric ${C}P^{2}$ Sigma Model, İsmet Yurduşen

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The surfaces constructed from the holomorphic solutions of the supersymmetric (susy) ${C}P^{N-1}$ sigma model are studied. By obtaining compact general expansion formulae having neat forms due to the properties of the superspace in which this model is described, the explicit expressions for the components of the radius vector as well as the elements of the metric and the Gaussian curvature are given in a rather natural manner. Several examples of constant curvature surfaces for the susy ${C}P^{2}$ sigma model are presented.

We developed a crop characteristic extraction framework. Starting from a custom SpaCy named entity recognition model, we added pre-trained word embeddings and a part-of-speech based entity expansion post-processing step. Then, we implemented an evaluation framework that functioned as a 5-fold cross validation wrapper for SpaCy custom training. Preliminary results showed improvement in the extraction framework after these additions.

We present a version of an unpublished result of A.L.S. Corner on p-adic modules with anti-isomorphic endomorphism algebras. The result gives a complete description of necessary conditions for two such modules to have anti-isomorphic endomorphism algebras and a sufficient condition is also given. A main difference in the current version is that extensive use is made of our ability to describe certain homomorphism groups.

The goal of this research is to conduct a theoretical investigation about the effect of the electroosmotic forces on the swimming of sperms throughout the cervical canal. To imitate male semen with self-propulsive spermatozoa, a hyperbolic tangent fluid is used as the base liquid. Swimming sperms move inside a ciliated cervical canal and peristalsis occurs due to the ciliated walls. The perturbation method is used to solve the controlling partial differential set of equations analytically. In this article, motivated by novel nanofluid solar energy coating systems, a mathematical model of hybrid magnesium oxide (MgO) and nickel (Ni) nanofluid magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stagnation point flow impinging on a porous elastic stretching surface in a porous medium is developed. The hybrid nanofluid is electrically conducted, and a magnetic Reynolds number is sufficiently large enough to invoke an induced magnetic field. A Darcy model is adopted for the isotropic, homogenous porous medium. The boundary conditions account for the impacts of the velocity slip and thermal slip. In this article, we examine the mechanism of cobalt and tantalum nanoparticles through a hybrid fluid model. The nanofluid is propagating through an anisotropically tapered artery with three different configurations; converging, diverging and non-tapered. To examine the rheology of the blood we have incorporated a Williamson fluid model which reveals both Newtonian and non-Newtonian effects. It is observed that the proposed algorithm can be applied for any continues probability distribution. Moreover, the description model and necessary assumptions are discussed. We generated a series of 15 particulate San Carlos olivine samples with varying porosity and particle size. We created five different particle size distributions and each particle size distribution was prepared with three different packing techniques. These samples were then imaged under a microscope and a binarization thresholding technique was used to determine each sample's surface porosity by the ratio of dark, void pixels to the total number of pixels in each image. Pen ink can be a crucial piece of physical evidence in the area of Forensic Science. For example, evidence such as notes, letters, printed documents, checks, currency, ransom notes, and books may contain ink. Analysis of ink is typically done for identification or differentiation purposes. To improve existing methods, it was proposed to create a database with many samples and experimental information. The methods used and evaluated were thin-layer chromatography (TLC) enhanced with RGB spot evaluation, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. Sea surface temperatures and vertical wind shear are essential to tropical cyclone formation. TCs need warm SSTs and low shear for genesis. Increasing SSTs and VWS changes influence storm development. This work analyzes SST and VWS trends for the Caribbean, surrounding region, and the Atlantic hurricane main developing region from 1982 to 2020. Storm intensity increases significantly during this period. Annual and seasonal trends show regional SSTs in the MDR are warming annually (0.0219°C yr-1) and per season (0.0280°C yr-1). In this thesis we follow on the mathematical aspects of the previous work of Shivamoggi (2009) on the Parker problem in Hall magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). We will present an analysis involving detailed analytical and numerical solutions to the Parker problem in Hall MHD. This dissertation considers some of the advantages, and limits, of applying quantum computing to solve two important graph problems. The first is estimating a graph's quantum chromatic number. The quantum chromatic number is the minimum number of colors necessary in a two-player game where the players cannot communicate but share an entangled state and must convince a referee with probability one that they have a proper vertex coloring. We establish several spectral lower bounds for the quantum chromatic number. These lower bounds extend the well-known Hoffman lower bound for the classical chromatic number. Forest soils consume atmospheric methane (CH4), serving as a major global CH4 sink that uptake an estimated 22 ± 12 Tg of CH4 per year. Temperature and soil moisture have been identified as key controls of the microbial consumption of CH4 in forest soils. Climate-driven warming and changing moisture regimes may impact forest soils’ role in the carbon cycle, and recent works suggests that forests could become weaker CH₄ sinks. Global climate change is likely to affect northeastern U.S. forests by increasing the frequency and severity of drought events. Historically, droughts rarely occurred in this region, so native tree species are not well-adapted to extreme moisture stress. In the future, the changing climate will likely cause unprecedented levels of low water availability which may have implications on future forest composition. Scanning tunneling microscopes allow for atomic spatial resolution but the resulting images are necessarily time-averaged and fast dynamics are lost. Pump-probe spectroscopy is a common optical technique used to measure ultrafast electronic dynamics but the integration of optical pump-probe spectroscopy into an STM requires specialized knowledge and equipment. Alternatively, an all-electronic pump-probe spectroscopy technique has recently been developed for use with an STM that replaces the laser pulses of optical pump-probe with voltage pulses. The entrainment map, developed by Dr.Diekman and Dr.Bose, is claimed to be a 1-dimensional map that produces a better prediction for phase-locking than methods than the phase response curve for circadian models.
