Comparison Of Metal-Carbenoid Reactions Of Β-2-Five-Membered Heteroaryl Substituted Α,Β-Unsaturated Ketones, Kumsal Eroğlu, Olcay Anaç, Füsun Şeyma Kişkan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

In this study, β-2-heteroaryl substituted (N-methyl 2-pyrrolyl, 2-thiophenyl, 2-furyl) α,β-unsaturated ketones were reacted with two α-diazo carbonyl compounds that had different characteristics (dimethyl diazo malonate and 1-diazo-1-phenyl-propane-2-one) in the presence of both copper and rhodium catalysts. In the case of reactions with N-methyl 2-pyrrolyl α,β-unsaturated ketones, the major product was the insertion derivative. However, in the reactions of 2-thiophenyl and 2-furyl α,β-unsaturated ketones with dimethyl diazomalonate (acceptor-acceptor disubstituted), only dihydrofuran products were formed over carbonyl ylides. When 2-thiophenyl and 2-furyl α,β-unsaturated ketones were reacted with 1-diazo-1-phenyl-propane-2-one (donor-acceptor disubstituted), 1-phenylpropane-1,2-dione was obtained under our reaction conditions.

Exploring Background Noise With A Large-N Infrasound Array: Waterfalls, Thunderstorms, And Earthquakes, L. T. Scamfer, J. F. Anderson

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ambient infrasound noise contains an abundance of information that is typically overlooked due to limitations of typical infrasound arrays. To evaluate the ability of large-N infrasound arrays to identify weak signals hidden in background noise, we examine data from a 22-element array in central Idaho, USA, spanning 58 days using a standard beamforming method. Our results include nearly continuous detections of diverse weak signals from infrasonic radiators, sometimes at surprising distances. We observe infrasound from both local (8 km) and distant (195 km) waterfalls. Thunderstorms and earthquakes are also notable sources, with distant thunderstorm infrasound observed from ∼800 to 900 …

Beyond Standard Model: Electromagnetic Origin Of Strong Interaction Between Composite Structures Made Of Basic Elementary ±E/3 Charges, Polievkt Perov

College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Works

Interaction between spinning composite structures of quarks is considered. In simple variants of the quark structures, one basic elementary particle of charge of magnitude |e|/3 is on the axis of rotation and several basic particles of an opposite sign are revolving in the circular orbit about the axis. Each charge in the structure contributes to the electric field and electric potential around the structure. But only revolving basic particles contribute to the spin and to the magnetic moment of the structure. Equations for the axial electric field and the electric potential of each structure at points on its axis are …

Numerical Study Of Owls' Leading-Edge Serrations, Asif Shahriar Nafi, Nikolaos Beratlis, Elias Balaras, Roi Gurka

Physics and Engineering Science

Owls' silent flight is commonly attributed to their special wing morphology combined with wingbeat kinematics. One of these special morphological features is known as the leading-edge serrations: rigid miniature hook-like patterns found at the primaries of the wings' leading-edge. It has been hypothesized that leading-edge serrations function as a passive flow control mechanism, impacting the aerodynamic performance. To elucidate the flow physics associated with owls' leading-edge serrations, we investigate the flow-field characteristic around a barn owl wing with serrated leading-edge geometry positioned at 20° angle of attack for a Reynolds number of 40 000. We use direct numerical simulations, where …

Outdoor Position Recovery From Heterogeneous Telco Cellular Data, Yige Zhang, Weixiong Rao, Kun Zhang, Lei Chen

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Recent years have witnessed unprecedented amounts of data generated by telecommunication (Telco) cellular networks. For example, measurement records (MRs) are generated to report the connection states between mobile devices and Telco networks, e.g., received signal strength. MR data have been widely used to localize outdoor mobile devices for human mobility analysis, urban planning, and traffic forecasting. Existing works using first-order sequence models such as the Hidden Markov Model (HMM) attempt to capture spatio-temporal locality in underlying mobility patterns for lower localization errors. The HMM approaches typically assume stable mobility patterns of the underlying mobile devices. Yet real MR datasets exhibit …

Guilty Machines: On Ab-Sens In The Age Of Ai, Dylan Lackey, Katherine Weinschenk Dec 2023

Guilty Machines: On Ab-Sens In The Age Of Ai, Dylan Lackey, Katherine Weinschenk

Critical Humanities

For Lacan, guilt arises in the sublimation of ab-sens (non-sense) into the symbolic comprehension of sen-absexe (sense without sex, sense in the deficiency of sexual relation), or in the maturation of language to sensibility through the effacement of sex. Though, as Slavoj Žižek himself points out in a recent article regarding ChatGPT, the split subject always misapprehends the true reason for guilt’s manifestation, such guilt at best provides a sort of evidence for the inclusion of the subject in the order of language, acting as a necessary, even enjoyable mark of the subject’s coherence (or, more importantly, the subject’s separation …

Information-Rich 6d Single-Molecule Imaging Design Using Optimization, Tingting Wu

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

When studying biochemical processes, localizing the targets alone will not paint a complete picture. We also need techniques to probe how biomolecules interact with one another, including how molecules are organized into larger structures, how they are oriented with respect to surrounding molecules, and how local chemical parameters, like pH and hydrophobicity, vary spatially and temporally. My dissertation focuses on single-molecule orientation localization microscopy (SMOLM, Chapter 1). The objective is to develop imaging techniques for measuring how molecules are oriented with respect to their surrounding molecules, namely, 3D orientation. Achieving optimal imaging performance requires careful design of both the forward …
