Effect Of Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound (Lipus) And Emdogain On Root Resorption In Amelogenin Knockout (Amex) Mice, Caitlin Huynh
Annual Research Symposium
In amelogenesis imperfecta, mutations are often found in the amelogenin gene. Inactivation of this amelogenin gene in 6-12 month old mice has led to root resorption in teeth and an increased number of osteoclasts in their bones. The objective of this study was to determine whether local injection of Emdogain (EMD) and low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) application to the jaw has a synergistic effect on the regeneration of root resorption (RR) in Amelogenin knockout (AMEX) mice; the ideal model representing Amelogenesis Imperfecta.

Chromatin Pattern Quantification For The Differentiation Of White Blood Cells, Paul Young, Ryan Cordner, Abigail Gordhamer
Chromatin Pattern Quantification For The Differentiation Of White Blood Cells, Paul Young, Ryan Cordner, Abigail Gordhamer
Annual Research Symposium
Nuclear chromatin patterns have been used historically to distinguish between different developmental stages and lineages of white blood cells. While it is common to characterize cells based on arbitrary ‘open’ or ‘closed’ chromatin patterns, quantification of chromatin data is lacking. By extracting nuclei from a database of white blood cells and running fractal analyses using TWOMBLI, we were able to produce meaningful data quantifying chromatin patterns. Our data were put through a random forest algorithm which grouped each point based on relationship probability. The algorithm compared immature and mature cell types as well as cells of similar maturity and differing …

Identification Of Strong Tremor Causes For Appropriate Rock Burst Prevention In A Hard Coal Mine, Rafał Pakosz, Łukasz Wojtecki, Maciej J. Mendecki, Agnieszka Krzyżanowska
Journal of Sustainable Mining
The exploitation carried out in the Bielszowice part of the Ruda Hard Coal Mine is mainly accompanied by seismic and rock burst hazards. The occurrence of high-energy tremors may be associated with many factors, e.g., fracturing of thick layers of high-strength rocks or destruction processes of a stressed and/or thick coal seam. These factors are often combined when excavating a single longwall panel. Determining the causes of strong tremors is of fundamental importance for mining and rock burst prevention. The extraction of the 004z longwall panel in the top layer of coal seam No. 504 was designed in complex geological …

Energy And Angular Distributions In 250 Ev Electron And Positron Collisions With Argon Atom, K. Tőkési, Robert D. Dubois
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present energy and angular differential cross sections for single ionization in collisions between electrons and positrons with argon atoms at 250 eV. We treat the collision classically using the three-body approximation where the target atoms are described within the single active electron approximation using a Garvey model potential and only the outermost electron is involved in the collision dynamics. Our present classical trajectory Monte Carlo model is shown to describe the ionization cross sections reasonably well and agree with existing experimental data. We show that the energy distributions, both for electron and positron impact, have the same shape and …

Holographic optical elements (HOEs) have the potential to enable more compact, versatile, and lightweight optical designs, but many challenges remain. Volume HOEs have the advantage of high diffraction efficiency, but they present both chromatic selectivity and chromatic dispersion, which impact their use with wide spectrum light sources. Single-color light emitting diode (LED) sources have a narrow spectrum that reduces these issues and this makes them better suited for use with volume HOEs. However, the LED source size must be taken into consideration for compact volume HOE-LED systems. To investigate the design limits for compact HOE-LED systems, a theoretical and experimental …
Pinpointing Dream Settings Onto Place Cookies
Pinpointing Dream Settings Onto Place Cookies
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
Dream reports are short pieces of text, where a dreamer summarizes the remembered experience of nightly dreams. Dream cartography addresses especially the spatial information contained in dream reports. In this context, the current formalization of space in GIScience such as points, lines, polygons, or labels, including place names or addresses, is not sufficient for mapping dream settings. In the best case, dream reports mention place names or streets. However, usually, the perception of space in dreams is designated in terms of whether this is familiar or not, inside or outside, safe or threatening. Moreover, basic comparisons between dream settings are …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Developing highly active and stable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is key to improving the efficiency and practical application of various sustainable energy technologies including water electrolysis, CO2 reduction, and metal air batteries. Here, we use evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) to synthesize highly porous fluorite nanocatalysts with a high surface area. In this study, we demonstrate that a 50% rare-earth cation substitution for Ce in the CeO2 fluorite lattice improves the OER activity and stability by introducing oxygen vacancies into the host lattice, which results in a decrease in the adsorption energy of the OH* intermediate in …

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research
A subset of individuals with schizophrenia (SZ) are thought to have a microvascular component to their illness with studies demonstrating alterations in retinal superficial, deep, and choroidal microvasculature networks. However, the direction and location of these alterations have differed across studies. In a recent study, we reported that individuals with SZ demonstrated lower superficial layer perfusion density than a healthy control (HC) group. The current study investigated characteristics of the deep vascular layer in SZ. We included 28 individuals with a diagnosis of SZ or schizoaffective disorder, and 37 HCs. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) data was collected to measure …

Non-Hermiticity has emerged as a new paradigm for controlling coupled-mode systems in ways that cannot be achieved with conventional techniques. One aspect of this control that has received considerable attention recently is the encircling of exceptional points (EPs). To date, most work has focused on systems consisting of two modes that are tuned by two control parameters and have isolated EPs. While these systems exhibit exotic features related to EP encircling, it has been shown that richer behavior occurs in systems with more than two modes. Such systems can be tuned by more than two control parameters, and contain EPs …

Educational Intervention For Delirium Assessment In Intensive Care Units Using The Confusion Assessment Method, Nathan Nguyen, Kaylee Putney, Alana Whittaker
Annual Research Symposium
Delirium frequently occurs in severely ill adults, leading to worse outcomes and increased duration of intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital stays, along with higher associated expenses. The 2018 clinical practice guidelines for Pain, Agitation, Delirium, Immobility, and Sleep Disruption (PADIS) recommend that all adult ICU patients be regularly assessed for delirium. At Valley Hospital Medical Center, the utilization of Confusion Assessment Method for the ICU (CAM-ICU) for monitoring delirium is infrequent, typically taking place either after the adjustment of sedatives or in response to nursing reports of positive neurologic assessments indicating signs of delirium.

Pharmacognosy And Trichomoniasis: A Scoping Review Protocol, Claire Hartwell, Melanie Arslanian, Brad Haubrich
Annual Research Symposium
Trichomoniasis, also called “trich”, is the most common non-viral sexually transmitted infection (STI). Its etiological agent is the protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis, against which first-line antiparasitics usually work. However, resistance is on the rise. Trich has traditionally been considered a nuisance infection, with many (particularly AMAB patients) being asymptomatic. But research in recent years has begun to unravel correlations of trichomonal infections with a myriad of comorbitidies, including infertility, cancers, the pathogenesis of AIDS, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Between the rise of drug resistance and the incidence of these comorbidities, new treatments are needed. In this work, we are …
