IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Native warm-season grasses (NWSG) can produce high quality forage and high rates of gain for beef cattle. However, little data is available on how NWSG affect the productivity of cow-calf operations on a farm scale. Therefore, we implemented an experiment at three sites, Booneville, AR, Linneus, MO and Louisville, TN, with cow-calf pairs (mature cows over ≥ 3 years old, spring calving). We evaluated two forage systems that mix either a drought or drought/flood tolerant native C4 species [big bluestem (BB) blend or eastern gamagrass (EG)] with a cool-season perennial, tall fescue (TF), and compared them to the most …

Fodder Scenario And Hortipastoral Opportunities To Enhance Fodder Production In India, Nagaratna Biradar, C. Lakshmi Devi, Vinod Kumar, Narendra S. Kulkarni, G. K. Kumar Anil, S. S. Guledagudda, A. Bheemappa

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Food grain production and livestock production are closely related in India as crop-residue forms the major source of fodder for livestock. It’s thus assumed that increase in food grain production has positive effect on availability of dry matter to the livestock. Using land use classification, crop production (2015 to 2020) and livestock census (2019) data, dry matter (DM) availability for livestock for 28 states of India was estimated. Hortipastoral opportunities by estimating area available under orchards in southern India were done to assess the possibility of introducing fodder crops in orchards. Some of the fodder crops were introduced in orchards …

Pisa Printing Microneedles With Controllable Aqueous Dissolution Kinetics, Aaron Priester, Jimmy Yeng, Yuwei Zhang, Krista Hilmas, Risheng Wang, Anthony J. Convertine

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study focused on the development of high-resolution polymeric structures using polymer-induced self-assembly (PISA) printing with commercially available digital light-processing (DLP) printers. Significantly, soluble solids could be 3D-printed using this methodology with controllable aqueous dissolution rates. This was achieved using a highly branched macrochain transfer agent (macro-CTA) containing multiple covalently attached CTA groups. In this work, the use of acrylamide as the self-assembling monomer in isopropyl alcohol was explored with the addition of N-(butoxymethyl)acrylamide to modulate the aqueous dissolution kinetics. PISA-printed microneedles were observed to have feature sizes as small as 27 μm, which was close to the resolution limit …

Faculty Publications-- Geography, Geology, and the Environment

The Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA) was a principal control of sedimentation across Gondwana from the late Devonian through early Permian. We assess the hypothesis that glacial to interglacial transitions in western Argentina were the primary control influencing sediment routing patterns among the various Carboniferous-Permian basins in western Argentina. The Carboniferous Ansilta Formation consists of glaciomarine, nearshore, and fluvial systems deposited during the LPIA along the eastern margin of the Calingasta-Uspallata Basin in Argentina. The lower, glacially influenced succession of the Ansilta Formation records at least five glacial advances; the upper succession of consists of progradational shallow marine, deltaic, and …

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Congratulations to the authors for this thoughtful and timely contribution to the spatial confounding literature. The intuitive nature of the method and simplicity of the estimation procedure will surely make Spatial+ popular with practitioners, and the theoretical developments are a major advance for researchers in this area. There is much to discuss! We have formatted our discussion in two sections: in Section 2 we consider the assumptions and statistical properties of Spatial+, and in Section 3 we examine how Spatial+ fits in the wider literature on spatial causal inference.

Detection And Relative Quantitation Of Changes In Gene Expression Of Hippo Proteins In Doxorubicin-Exposed Human Cells By Rt-Qpcr, Lillian Fleisher, Tricia Domingo, Christopher So, Stephen Lee

Annual Research Symposium

The HIPPO signaling pathway plays a key role in cell proliferation and tumor suppression. It consists of serine/threonine kinase cascades, including MST1/2, LATS1/2, YAP, and TAZ. When the HIPPO pathway is activated, gene expression is altered. Dysfunction of the activity of this cascade may contribute to cancer development and chemoresistance. FAT4 is an intracellular protein that may regulate the HIPPO signaling. The purpose of this study is to determine the relative changes of mRNA of the HIPPO pathway members and FAT4 in doxorubicin-treated and vehicle-treated in vitro cell lines.

The space around our bodies is not empty or neutral. In fact, the space around our bodies is loaded with meaning and important. When we move through it, whether it be in our daily lives or a choreographer making specific choices in order to convey a message, we activate new understandings in our lives. As a dancer and choreographer, I created a duet from improvisational climbs on an icosahedron. This article discusses choreographing from the form icosahedron and connects Laban's theories of space harmony with the activation of meaning in my life.

Unimer Suppression Enables Supersaturated Homopolymer Swollen Micelles With Long-Term Stability After Glassy Entrapment, Eric R. Williams, Christian X. Ruff, Morgan Stefik

Faculty Publications

Micelle sizes are critical for a range of applications where the simple ability to adjust and lock in specific stable sizes has remained largely elusive. While micelle swelling agents are well-known, their dynamic re-equilibration in solution implies limited stability. Here, a non-equilibrium processing sequence is studied where supersaturated homopolymer swelling is combined with glassy-core (“persistent”) micelles. This path-dependent process was found to sensitively depend on unimer concentration as revealed by DLS, SAXS, and TEM analysis. Here, lower-selectivity solvent combinations led to the formation of unimer-homopolymer aggregates and eventual precipitation, reminiscent of anomalous micellization. In contrast, higher-selectivity solvents enabled supersaturated homopolymer …

Determining The Surface PKA Of Perfluorooctanoic Acid, Lila J. Musegades, Owen P. Curtin, Jenée D. Cyran

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an environmentally prevalent and persistent organic pollutant with toxic and bioaccumulative properties. Despite the known importance of perfluorinated pollutants in the global environment, molecular-level details of the physicochemical behavior of PFOA on aqueous interfaces remain poorly understood. Here, we utilized two surface-specific techniques, vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy (SFG) and surface tensiometry, to investigate the pH-induced structural changes of PFOA and octanoic acid (OA) and determined the apparent pKa at the air–water surface. The SFG spectra and surface activity model were investigated over a wide range of pHs. With the surface tension measurements, the …

Howard, Yun Zhang, Bridget A. Tripp, Jennifer Clarke, Amy B. Howell, Joel H. Rubenstein, Julian A. Abrams, Maria Westerhoff, Laura A. Kresty

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

The gut and local esophageal microbiome progressively shift from healthy commensal bacteria to inflammation-linked pathogenic bacteria in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). However, mechanisms by which microbial communities and metabolites contribute to reflux-driven EAC remain incompletely understood and challenging to target. Herein, we utilized a rat reflux-induced EAC model to investigate targeting the gut microbiome–esophageal metabolome axis with cranberry proanthocyanidins (C-PAC) to inhibit EAC progression. Sprague-Dawley rats, with or without reflux induction, received water or C-PAC ad libitum (700 μg/rat/day) for 25 or 40 weeks. C-PAC exerted prebiotic activity abrogating reflux-induced dysbiosis and mitigating …

On A Generator Of Copulas Method Based On A Duplication-Parameter Technique, Christophe Chesneau

International Journal of Emerging Multidisciplinaries: Mathematics

A two-dimensional copula is a function that accurately depicts the pattern of dependence between two quantitative variables. The demand for new two-dimensional copulas is as strong as ever, driven by the emergence of contemporary data from various sources. This paper makes a contribution to this area by presenting a novel modification of the well-known convex sums of copulas method. This modification is based on a thorough duplication-parameter technique: we transform one parameter into two, and we apply the classical convex sums method to only one of these parameters in the unit distribution setting. The main goals are (i) to solve …

Extraterrestrial Life: The Possibility Of A Human-Alien Interaction, Ariana M. Piscoya

CAFE Symposium 2024

We all have heard of at least one case where someone assured having seen a flying extraterrestrial object. There are thousands of thousands of videos we can find online that “prove” the existence of aliens. In the hypothetical case where aliens are really out there, why haven't we been able to talk to them and look at them face-to-face? A human-extraterrestrial interaction has not yet been achieved for two reasons. First, alien energy is much more powerful than that of humans, so it would require thousands of thousands of years for the human race to develop a technology able to …

Emergent Ai, Jillian A. Bick Feb 2024

Emergent Ai, Jillian A. Bick

CAFE Symposium 2024

For many years, artificial intelligence (AI) was considered to be limited in its abilities due to being confined to a pre-defined set of data. Currently, however, AI models have grown in complexity and size, leading to some previously impossible behaviors. These behaviors, known as "emergent AI behaviors," are unpredictable and not pre-programmed. Their existence suggests that AI is expanding in adaptability and may one day rival human intelligence. Media often portrays AI as having emotions and having the ability to operate autonomously, but what behaviors are AI really capable of?

Traffic Signal Optimization Using Multiobjective Linear Programming For Oversaturated Traffic Conditions, Mustafa Murat Coşkun, Cevat Şener, İsmail Hakkı Toroslu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, we present a framework designed to optimize signals at intersections experiencing oversaturated traffic conditions, utilizing mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) techniques. The proposed MILP solutions were developed with different objective functions, namely a reduction in the total remaining queue and fair distribution of the remaining queue after each signal cycle. Our framework contains two distinct stages. The initial stage applies two distinct MILP methodologies, while the subsequent stage employs a neighborhood search method to further reduce the delays associated with the green signal timings derived from the first stage. Ultimately, to evaluate their effectiveness across various intersections, we …

Grey Wolf Optimization Algorithm-Based Robust Neural Learning Control Of Passive Torque Simulators With Predetermined Performance, Seyyed Amirhossein Saadat, Mohammad Mehdi Fateh, Javad Keighobadi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In flight control systems, the actuators need to tolerate aerodynamic torques and continue their operations without interruption. To this end, using the simulators to test the actuators in conditions close to the real flight is efficient. On the other hand, achieving the guaranteed performance encounters some challenges and practical limitations such as unknown dynamics, external disturbances, and state constraints in reality. Thus, this article attempts to present a robust adaptive neural network learning controller equipped with a disturbance observer for passive torque simulators (PTS) with load torque constraints. The radial basis function networks (RBFNs) are employed to identify the unknown …

Differentially Private Online Bayesian Estimation With Adaptive Truncation, Sinan Yildirim Feb 2024

Differentially Private Online Bayesian Estimation With Adaptive Truncation, Sinan Yildirim

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a novel online and adaptive truncation method is proposed for differentially private Bayesian online estimation of a static parameter regarding a population. A local differential privacy setting is assumed where sensitive information from individuals is collected on an individual level and sequentially. The inferential aim is to estimate, on the fly, a static parameter regarding the population to which those individuals belong. We propose sequential Monte Carlo to perform online Bayesian estimation. When individuals provide sensitive information in response to a query, it is necessary to corrupt it with privacy-preserving noise to ensure the privacy of those …
