Motion-sensitive cameras, otherwise known as camera traps, have become increasingly popular amongst ecologists for studying wildlife. These cameras allow scientists to remotely observe animals through an inexpensive and non-invasive approach. Vacant lots have been associated with community violence for many years. Researchers have confirmed a positive correlation between vacant lots and vacant buildings with increased violence in urban and rural geographies. However, identifying vacant lots has been a challenge, and modeling methods were largely manual and time-intensive. This prevented cities and non-profit organizations from acting on the information since it was expensive and high-risk to develop remediation programs without clearly understanding where or how many vacant lots existed.

Machine learning has emerged as a popular and powerful approach for solving problems in astrophysics. We review applications of machine learning techniques for the analysis of ground-based gravitational-wave (GW) detector data. Examples include techniques for improving the sensitivity of Advanced Laser Interferometer GW Observatory and Advanced Virgo GW searches, methods for fast measurements of the astrophysical parameters of GW sources, and algorithms for reduction and characterization of non-astrophysical detector noise. These applications demonstrate how machine learning techniques may be harnessed to enhance the science that is possible with current and future GW detectors.

Sarcopenia is a medical condition that involves loss of muscle mass. It has been difficult todefine and only recently assigned an official medical code, leading to many medical records lacking a coded diagnosis although the clinical note text may discuss it or symptoms of it. This thesis investigates the application of machine learning and natural language processing to analyze clinical note text to see how well the term ’sarcopenia’ can be predicted in clinical note text from records concerning the condition.

In New York State (NYS), summertime long-range transported smoke plumes and high fine mode particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration during the smoke episodes have been reported. Since the frequency, intensity, and burned area of wildfires over Northern America have increased in recent years, the contribution of transported smoke aerosols to local air quality could become more significant. This study aimed to characterize the transport of smoke aerosols and quantify their impacts on the local air quality over NYS. State-of-the-art image captioning models can successfully produce a diverse set of accurate captions. Previous research has focused on improving caption diversity while maintaining a high level of fidelity. We shift the focus from accuracy and diversity to controllability. We use a modified version of the traditional encoder-decoder network that allows the model to produce a meaningful and structured latent space. We then explore the latent space using several latent cartographic methods: lerp, slerp, analogy completion, attribute vector rotation, and interpolation graphs. Machine learning has demonstrated potential in analyzing large, complex datasets and has become ubiquitous across many fields of scientific research. As machine learning is actively deployed in many complex and critical domains, it is essential for machine learning to engage with domain expertise to aid in knowledge discovery as well as address challenges in predictive modeling in complex domains. The wide availability of cheap consumer cameras has democratized photography for novices and experts alike, with more than a trillion photographs taken each year. While many of these cameras---especially those on mobile phones---have inexpensive optics and make imperfect measurements, the use of modern computational techniques can allow the recovery of high-quality photographs as well as of scene attributes.
In this dissertation, we explore algorithms to infer a wide variety of physical and visual properties of the world, including color, geometry, reflectance etc., from images taken by casual photographers in unconstrained settings.
