Medical Image Segmentation Using Machine Learning, Masoud Khani
Medical Image Segmentation Using Machine Learning, Masoud Khani
Theses and Dissertations
Image segmentation is the most crucial step in image processing and analysis. It can divide an image into meaningfully descriptive components or pathological structures. The result of the image division helps analyze images and classify objects. Therefore, getting the most accurate segmented image is essential, especially in medical images. Segmentation methods can be divided into three categories: manual, semiautomatic, and automatic. Manual is the most general and straightforward approach. Manual segmentation is not only time-consuming but also is imprecise. However, automatic image segmentation techniques, such as thresholding and edge detection, are not accurate in the presence of artifacts like noise …
Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging For The Early Prediction Of Treatment Response In Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Benjamin C. Musall
Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging For The Early Prediction Of Treatment Response In Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Benjamin C. Musall
Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype of breast cancer which lacks upregulated hormone receptors. Because of this, it is not vulnerable to clinically available targeted therapies. When treated with standard of care neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NAST), TNBC only shows approximately a 40% rate of pathologic complete response (pCR). A biomarker which could predict TNBC response to NAST early during treatment would be useful, as it would allow for non-responders to be triaged to alternative therapies and potentially allow for the treatment of responders to be de-escalated.
Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) may be used to probe and …

Nowadays, software question and answer (SQA) data has become a treasure for software engineering as it contains a huge volume of programming knowledge. That knowledge can be interpreted in many different ways to support various software activities, such as code recommendation, program repair, and so on. In this dissertation, we interpret SQA data by addressing three novel research problems.
The first research problem is about linkable knowledge unit prediction. In this problem, a question and its answers within a post in Stack Overflow are considered as a knowledge unit (KU). KUs often contain semantically relevant knowledge, and thus linkable for …

Take The Lead: Toward A Virtual Video Dance Partner, Ty Farris
Master's Theses
My work focuses on taking a single person as input and predicting the intentional movement of one dance partner based on the other dance partner's movement. Human pose estimation has been applied to dance and computer vision, but many existing applications focus on a single individual or multiple individuals performing. Currently there are very few works that focus specifically on dance couples combined with pose prediction. This thesis is applicable to the entertainment and gaming industry by training people to dance with a virtual dance partner.
Many existing interactive or virtual dance partners require a motion capture system, multiple cameras …

Inspired by the great success of machine learning (ML), researchers have applied ML techniques to visualizations to achieve a better design, development, and evaluation of visualizations. This branch of studies, known as ML4VIS, is gaining increasing research attention in recent years. To successfully adapt ML techniques for visualizations, a structured understanding of the integration of ML4VIS is needed. In this article, we systematically survey 88 ML4VIS studies, aiming to answer two motivating questions: “what visualization processes can be assisted by ML?” and “how ML techniques can be used to solve visualization problems? ” This survey reveals seven main processes where …
Hardware For Quantized Mixed-Precision Deep Neural Networks, Andres Rios
Hardware For Quantized Mixed-Precision Deep Neural Networks, Andres Rios
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Recently, there has been a push to perform deep learning (DL) computations on the edge rather than the cloud due to latency, network connectivity, energy consumption, and privacy issues. However, state-of-the-art deep neural networks (DNNs) require vast amounts of computational power, data, and energyâ??resources that are limited on edge devices. This limitation has brought the need to design domain-specific architectures (DSAs) that implement DL-specific hardware optimizations. Traditionally DNNs have run on 32-bit floating-point numbers; however, a body of research has shown that DNNs are surprisingly robust and do not require all 32 bits. Instead, using quantization, networks can run on …

Department of Computer Science and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Edge computing network is a great candidate to reduce latency and enhance performance of the Internet. The flexibility afforded by Edge computing to handle data creates exciting range of possibilities. However, Edge servers have some limitations since Edge computing process and analyze partial sets of information. It is challenging to allocate computing and network resources rationally to satisfy the requirement of mobile devices under uncertain wireless network, and meet the constraints of datacenter servers too. To combat these issues, this dissertation proposes smart multi armed bandit algorithms that decide the appropriate connection setup for multiple network access technologies on the …
Forecasting Pedestrian Trajectory Using Deep Learning, Arsal Syed
Forecasting Pedestrian Trajectory Using Deep Learning, Arsal Syed
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In this dissertation we develop different methods for forecasting pedestrian trajectories. Complete understanding of pedestrian motion is essential for autonomous agents and social robots to make realistic and safe decisions. Current trajectory prediction methods rely on incorporating historic motion, scene features and social interaction to model pedestrian behaviors. Our focus is to accurately understand scene semantics to better forecast trajectories. In order to do so, we leverage semantic segmentation to encode static scene features such as walkable paths, entry/exits, static obstacles etc. We further evaluate the effectiveness of using semantic maps on different datasets and compare its performance with already …

Existing literature have focused on studying the apparent and latent …
Prediction Of Concurrent Hypertensive Disorders In Pregnancy And Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Using Machine Learning Techniques, Mary Ejiwale
Theses and Dissertations
Gestational diabetes mellitus and hypertensive disorders in pregnancy are serious maternal health conditions with immediate and lifelong mother-child health consequences. These obstetric pathologies have been widely investigated, but mostly in silos, while studies focusing on their simultaneous occurrence rarely exist. This is especially the case in the machine learning domain. This retrospective study sought to investigate, construct, evaluate, compare, and isolate a supervised machine learning predictive model for the binary classification of co-occurring gestational diabetes mellitus and hypertensive disorders in pregnancy in a cohort of otherwise healthy pregnant women. To accomplish the stated aims, this study analyzed an extract (n=4624, …

For many years, the global population of honey bees has been decreasing due to inconclusive reasons resulting in the syndrome Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). This syndrome has been plaguing bees and affecting commercial agriculture pollination since 1998. Many researchers have suggested that pesticides, in-hive chemicals, pathogens, etc., might be the causes of CCD. Researchers also believe that any changes in a beehive can disturb the bees, which may negatively affect their health. Honey bees are the most vital among all the animal pollinators contributing to approximately 30% of the world’s commercial pollination services. As they are of keystone importance to …

Future Computing and Informatics Journal
Forecasting future values of time-series data is a critical task in many disciplines including financial planning and decision-making. Researchers and practitioners in statistics apply traditional statistical methods (such as ARMA, ARIMA, ES, and GARCH) for a long time with varying accuracies. Deep learning provides more sophisticated and non-linear approximation that supersede traditional statistical methods in most cases. Deep learning methods require minimal features engineering compared to other methods; it adopts an end-to-end learning methodology. In addition, it can handle a huge amount of data and variables. Financial time series forecasting poses a challenge due to its high volatility and non-stationarity …

Data-Driven Studies On Social Networks: Privacy And Simulation, Yasanka Sameera Horawalavithana
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Social media datasets are fundamental to understanding a variety of phenomena, such as epidemics, adoption of behavior, crowd management, and political uprisings. At the same time, many such datasets capturing computer-mediated social interactions are recorded nowadays by individual researchers or by organizations. However, while the need for real social graphs and the supply of such datasets are well established, the flow of data from data owners to researchers is significantly hampered by privacy risks: even when humans’ identities are removed, or data is anonymized to some extent, studies have proven repeatedly that re-identifying anonymized user identities (i.e., de-anonymization) is doable …

Lexical Complexity Prediction With Assembly Models, Aadil Islam
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
Tuning the complexity of one's writing is essential to presenting ideas in a logical, intuitive manner to audiences. This paper describes a system submitted by team BigGreen to LCP 2021 for predicting the lexical complexity of English words in a given context. We assemble a feature engineering-based model and a deep neural network model with an underlying Transformer architecture based on BERT. While BERT itself performs competitively, our feature engineering-based model helps in extreme cases, eg. separating instances of easy and neutral difficulty. Our handcrafted features comprise a breadth of lexical, semantic, syntactic, and novel phonetic measures. Visualizations of BERT …
Fine-Grained Detection Of Hate Speech Using Bertoxic, Yakoob Khan
Fine-Grained Detection Of Hate Speech Using Bertoxic, Yakoob Khan
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
This thesis describes our approach towards the fine-grained detection of hate speech using deep learning. We leverage the transformer encoder architecture to propose BERToxic, a system that fine-tunes a pre-trained BERT model to locate toxic text spans in a given text and utilizes additional post-processing steps to refine the prediction boundaries. The post-processing steps involve (1) labeling character offsets between consecutive toxic tokens as toxic and (2) assigning a toxic label to words that have at least one token labeled as toxic. Through experiments, we show that these two post-processing steps improve the performance of our model by 4.16% on …

Soarnet, Deep Learning Thermal Detection For Free Flight, Jake T. Tallman
Master's Theses
Thermals are regions of rising hot air formed on the ground through the warming of the surface by the sun. Thermals are commonly used by birds and glider pilots to extend flight duration, increase cross-country distance, and conserve energy. This kind of powerless flight using natural sources of lift is called soaring. Once a thermal is encountered, the pilot flies in circles to keep within the thermal, so gaining altitude before flying off to the next thermal and towards the destination. A single thermal can net a pilot thousands of feet of elevation gain, however estimating thermal locations is not …

Machine learning has made significant contributions to bioinformatics and computational biology. In particular, supervised learning approaches have been widely used in solving problems such as biomarker identification, drug response prediction, and so on. However, because of the limited availability of comprehensively labeled and clean data, constructing predictive models in super vised settings is not always desirable or possible, especially when using datahunger, redhot learning paradigms such as deep learning methods. Hence, there are urgent needs to develop new approaches that could leverage more readily available unlabeled data in driving successful machine learning ap plications in this area.

A Survey Of Computer Graphics Facial Animation Methods: Comparing Traditional Approaches To Machine Learning Methods, Joseph A. Johnson
A Survey Of Computer Graphics Facial Animation Methods: Comparing Traditional Approaches To Machine Learning Methods, Joseph A. Johnson
Master's Theses
Human communications rely on facial expression to denote mood, sentiment, and intent. Realistic facial animation of computer graphic models of human faces can be difficult to achieve as a result of the many details that must be approximated in generating believable facial expressions. Many theoretical approaches have been researched and implemented to create more and more accurate animations that can effectively portray human emotions. Even though many of these approaches are able to generate realistic looking expressions, they typically require a lot of artistic intervention to achieve a believable result. To reduce the intervention needed to create realistic facial animation, …

Image-Based Real Estate Appraisal Using Cnns And Ensemble Learning, Prathamesh Dnyanesh Kumkar
Master's Projects
Real Estate Appraisal is performed to evaluate properties during a range of activities like buying, selling, mortgaging, or insuring. Traditionally, this process is done by real estate brokers who consider factors like the location of a house, its area, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, along with other amenities to assess the property. This approach is quite subjective since different brokers may arrive at a different quote for the same property depending on their analysis. The development in machine learning algorithms has given rise to several Automated Valuation Models (AVMs) to estimate real estate prices. Real estate websites use such …

Much progress has been made in text analysis, specifically within the statistical domain of Term Frequency (TF) and Inverse Document Frequency (IDF). However, there is much room for improvement especially within the area of discovering Emerging Trends. Emerging Trend Detection Systems (ETDS) depend on ingesting a collection of textual data and TF/IDF to identify new or up-trending topics within the Corpus. However, the tremendous rate of change and the amount of digital information presents a challenge that makes it almost impossible for a human expert to spot emerging trends without relying on an automated ETD system. Since the U.S. Government …

Analyses And Creation Of Author Stylized Text, Keith Carlson
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Written text is one of the major ways that humans communicate their thoughts. A single thought can be expressed through many different combinations of words, and the writer must choose which they will use. We call the idea which is communicated the content of the message, and the particular words chosen to express the content, the style. The same content expressed in a different style may tell something useful about the author of the text (e.g., the author's identity), may be easier to understand for different audiences, or may evoke different emotions in the reader.
In this work we explore …
