Flow Induced By Upwelling Winds In An Equatorward Facing Bay: Gulf Of Arauco, Chile, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson, Larry P. Atkinson, Dante Figueroa, Leonardo Castro

CCPO Publications

[1] Shipborne observations of hydrographic and flow velocity profiles were combined with wind velocity measurements to describe the characteristics of the wind-induced flow in an equatorward facing bay of central Chile in South America. The measurements, which were taken from two transects and one anchor station, were made during late austral spring, between 4 and 10 December 2000. Most observations concentrated on Boca Grande, a transect that crossed the deep, northern ( equatorward) entrance to the bay. The other transect crossed the smaller and shallower, westward entrance to the bay, Boca Chica. The anchor station was located inside the bay, …

Beach Profile Evolution Under Plunging And Spilling Breakers, Ping Wang, Bruce A. Ebersole, Ernest R. Smith

Geology Faculty Publications

Beach-profile evolution, along with measurements of waves, currents, and sediment concentration, under spilling and plunging breakers of similar height were studied in the three-dimensional Large-Scale Sediment Transport Facility at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center. Unidirectional irregular waves were generated over a fine-sand beach. Beach-profile shape reached equilibrium after 1,330 and 280 min of spilling and plunging wave actions, respectively. Near the main breaker line, the profile evolved differently under plunging and spilling breakers. Across most of the midsurf zone dominated by surf bores, the equilibrium profile shapes were similar. Uniform energy dissipation per unit volume at equilibrium, …

Research Reports and Research Bulletins

Along with air and water, soil contributes essential processes to the natural order of global cycles. With the exception of edibles from the sea, virtually everything we, and most other land-based animals, eat is derived from soil. Soil is a storage medium of essential minerals and nutrients for fulfilling our agricultural and nutritional needs. Humans work the soil to provide the basics of food, clothing, and shelter. We also use the soil as a medium to store and discard our waste. Virtually everything we do is in some way connected to soil

Recent Applications Of Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry To Environmental Measurements, Michael A. Janusa

Faculty Publications

Atomic absorption spectroscopy is very useful for the determination of a large number of elements, especially at trace levels. It is a widely used technique for analysis of a wide variety of sample matrices including biota, soils, and water. Atomic absorption spectroscopy is a very reputable technique that is inexpensive and delivers accurate results even in a complex matrix. This review focuses on the applications of flame atomic absorption spectroscopy to environmental measurements, and is mainly based on papers published from 1999–2002.

Water Discharge Models, Seasonal Effluent Mass Loading, And Best Management Practices For Crawfish Ponds, Landon David Parr Jan 2002

Water Discharge Models, Seasonal Effluent Mass Loading, And Best Management Practices For Crawfish Ponds, Landon David Parr

LSU Master's Theses

Nearly 35,000 ha are used to grow crawfish in southwest and south-central Louisiana, and many of these ponds discharge into impaired water bodies. In 2002, proposed guidelines were published by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) assigning effluent limitations and standards for some aquaculture production systems and exempting others (e.g. crawfish ponds). This research had three objectives relative to crawfish ponds: develop water discharge models; final drawdown effluent quality and seasonal mass loading of solids and nutrients; and identification of Best Management Practices (BMPs) that could reduce effluent discharge and improve effluent quality. Models for south-central and southwest Louisiana …

Determination Of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulphonates And Their Biodegradation Intermediates By Isocratic Rp-Hplc, Mehmet Akyüz, David J. Roberts Jan 2002

Determination Of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulphonates And Their Biodegradation Intermediates By Isocratic Rp-Hplc, Mehmet Akyüz, David J. Roberts

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

An HPLC method was developed to determine linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LASs) and their biotransformation products sulphophenyl carboxylates by isocratic chromatography using two C_{18} columns in series. Solid-phase extraction with a (C_{18}) cartridge was employed to isolate LAS from sediment and sewage effluent samples. Sodium perchlorate and ammonium perchlorate were used as ion pair agents. The recovery of the compounds was 94% \pm 2 and 98% \pm 2 respectively for sediment and sewage effluent. It was demonstrated that it is possible to separate LAS compounds and their isomers and homologues using this system.

A Statistical Model Using Reference Evapotranspiration And Weather Data To Predict The Economic Optimal Irrigation Level For Corn Production In The Texas Panhandle, W. Arden Colette, Clay Robinson, Lal Khan Almas Apr 2001

A Statistical Model Using Reference Evapotranspiration And Weather Data To Predict The Economic Optimal Irrigation Level For Corn Production In The Texas Panhandle, W. Arden Colette, Clay Robinson, Lal Khan Almas

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture

Corn yield and evapotranspiration (ET) data obtained from weighing lysimeters is accumulated from nine experiments over six years and used to estimate a response function. The quadratic response function of corn yield as a function of water use by the plants indicates that yield increases at a decreasing rate as ET increases. Extending the analysis to water application data by commercial producers in a thirteen county area in the Texas Panhandle provides a response function of yield as a function of water application to meet ET needs. The best estimate of the relationship is a quadratic function. The response function …

Thermoregulation In Juvenile Red Kangaroos (Macropus Rufus) After Pouch Exit: Higher Metabolism And Evaporative Water Requirements, Adam J. Munn, Terence J. Dawson Jan 2001

Thermoregulation In Juvenile Red Kangaroos (Macropus Rufus) After Pouch Exit: Higher Metabolism And Evaporative Water Requirements, Adam J. Munn, Terence J. Dawson

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The population dynamics of red kangaroos (Macropus rufus) in the Australian arid zone is tightly linked with environmental factors, which partly operate via the survival of juvenile animals. A crucial stage is the young-at-foot (YAF) stage when kangaroos permanently exit the pouch. We have examined the thermal biology of YAF red kangaroos during ages from permanent pouch exit until weaning. Over a wide range of environmental temperatures (ambient temperature [T-a] -5 degrees to 45 degreesC), YAF red kangaroos had a mass-specific metabolism that was generally twice that of adults, considerably higher than would be expected for an adult marsupial of …

Distributed Polarizability Of The Water Dimer: Field-Induced Charge Transfer Along The Hydrogen Bond, Marc In Het Panhuis, P L A Popelier, R W. Munn, J G. Angyan Jan 2001

Distributed Polarizability Of The Water Dimer: Field-Induced Charge Transfer Along The Hydrogen Bond, Marc In Het Panhuis, P L A Popelier, R W. Munn, J G. Angyan

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The topological partitioning of electronic properties approach at Hartree-Fock level is used to investigate charge transfer response in a water dimer. Distributed polarizability components are employed to calculate the change in electron density under external fields. Field-induced charge flow between the water monomers is most significant along the direction of the hydrogen bond. The molecular polarizability of the molecules in the dimer is reduced owing to formation of the hydrogen bond.
