Ventilatory Accommodation Of Oxygen Demand And Respiratory Water Loss In Kangaroos From Mesic And Arid Environments, The Eastern Grey Kangaroo (Macropus Giganteus) And The Red Kangaroo (Macropus Rufus), Terence J. Dawson, Adam J. Munn, Cyntina E. Blaney, Andrew Krockenberger, Shane K. Maloney

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

We studied ventilation in kangaroos from mesic and arid environments, the eastern grey kangaroo (Macropus giganteus) and the red kangaroo (Macropus rufus), respectively, within the range of ambient temperatures (T-a) from -5 degrees to 45 degrees C. At thermoneutral temperatures (T-a = 25 degrees C), there were no differences between the species in respiratory frequency, tidal volume, total ventilation, or oxygen extraction. The ventilatory patterns of the kangaroos were markedly different from those predicted from the allometric equation derived for placentals. The kangaroos had low respiratory frequencies and higher tidal volumes, even when adjustment was made for their lower basal …

Electrothermal Atomic Absorption Spectrometric Determination Of Nickel After Its Flotation Enrichment By Iron(Iii) Hexamethylenedithiocarbamate, Trajce Stafilov, Gorica Pavlovska, Katarina Cundeva

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Abstract. Nanogram quantities of nickel were removed from 1 L samples of dilute aqueous solutions by coflotation. A mixture of hydrated iron(III) oxide (Fe_2O_3\( \cdot \)xH_2O) and iron(III) hexamethylene-dithiocarbamate (Fe(HMDTC)_3) served as collectors. After flotation separation from the mother liquor, the solid sublate containing nickel traces was dissolved and the analyte was determined by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS). All important parameters necessary for the successful collection of nickel were checked. The results of nickel ETAAS analysis in tap and spring waters were compared with inductively coupled plasma-atomic emis-sion spectrometric measurements (ICP-AES). The limit detection of nickel by the ETAAS …

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

A model1'2 which describes the transfer of irradiant light in water is used to predict the fluorescence response ofthe water surface reflectance under solar induced or an artificial light source such as a laser. Formulations for the estimation of wavelength dependent fluorescent coefficients. The techniques allows the description ofa fluorescence reflectance response in deep and shallow waters with various bottom reflectance signatures such as submerged vegetation, corals and sand. Recent advances in the model are presented for obtaining wavelength dependent fluorescence spectrum responses from the solutions of the two flow equations following the procedures developed by Bostater1'2'3. Synthetic or modeled …

Humic Substances As Interferences In The Analysis Of Nitrite In Water, Stephanie Ann Tebault Oct 1999

Humic Substances As Interferences In The Analysis Of Nitrite In Water, Stephanie Ann Tebault

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Humic substances are of current interest because of their roles in environmental processes involving pollutants. It is also becoming recognized that humic substances may interfere in analysis of environmental samples though the possible adverse effects do not appear to be fully appreciated. The present effort focuses on determining whether humic materials interfere in the analysis of nitrite in water using the Griess reaction. This is a well-known reaction using nitrosation to gjve a diazonium salt followed by coupling with an appropriate reagent to form a dye. This colorimetric method continues to be applied in the laboratory and the field for …

A Theoretical Study Of The Electronic Coupling Element For Electron Transfer In Water, Newt E. Miller '99, Matthew C. Wander '97, Robert J. Cave Jan 1999

A Theoretical Study Of The Electronic Coupling Element For Electron Transfer In Water, Newt E. Miller '99, Matthew C. Wander '97, Robert J. Cave

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The electronic coupling element for electron transfer between a donor and acceptor in water is examined using simulations combining molecular dynamics and semiempirical quantum mechanics. In the first phase of the simulations a model donor and acceptor are solvated in water, using realistic potentials. Following equilbration, molecular dynamics simulations are performed with the donor, acceptor, and water at approximately 300 K, under periodic boundary conditions. In the second phase of the simulation, the electronic coupling element between the donor and acceptor is calculated for a number of time slices, in the presence of the intervening water molecules (those having a …

A Simulation Study Of The Kinetics Of Passage Of Co2 And N2 Through The Liquid/Vapor Interface Of Water, T Somasundaram, Marc In Het Panhuis, R M. Lynden-Bell, C H. Patterson Jan 1999

A Simulation Study Of The Kinetics Of Passage Of Co2 And N2 Through The Liquid/Vapor Interface Of Water, T Somasundaram, Marc In Het Panhuis, R M. Lynden-Bell, C H. Patterson

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The rate of passage of molecules of carbon dioxide and nitrogen through the vapor–liquid interface of water at 300 K is studied by simulation. Previous work has established the form of the free energy profile which has a minimum when the solute molecule is on the surface and a barrier between this state and solution in the bulk liquid. In one set of simulations, trajectories were initiated in the gas phase. From these, the average lifetime of molecules in the surface is determined to be considerably longer than the inverse of the energy relaxation rate, so that the sticking coefficient …

An Ab Initio Study Of Specific Solvent Effects On The Electronic Coupling Element In Electron Transfer Reactions, Thomas M. Henderson '98, Robert J. Cave Nov 1998

An Ab Initio Study Of Specific Solvent Effects On The Electronic Coupling Element In Electron Transfer Reactions, Thomas M. Henderson '98, Robert J. Cave

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Specific solvent effects on the electronic coupling element for electron transfer are examined using two model donor–acceptor systems (Zn2+ and Li2+) and several model “solvent” species (He, Ne, H2O, and NH3). The effects are evaluated relative to the given donor–acceptor pair without solvent present. The electronic coupling element (Hab) is found to depend strongly on the identity of the intervening solvent, with He atoms decreasing Hab, whereas H2O and NH3 significantly increase Hab. The distance dependence (essentially exponential decay) is weakly affected by a single intervening solvent atom–molecule. However, when the donor–acceptor distance increases in concert with addition of successively …

Yellagonga Wetlands: A Study Of The Water Chemistry And Aquatic Fauna, Adrianne Kinnear, Patrick Garnett, Hugo Bekle, K. Upton

Research outputs pre 2011

Wetlands worldwide are continually threatened by urbanisation and Western Australia is no exception. Since European settlement in 1829, it has been estimated that at least 75% of the wetlands of the Swan Coastal Plain have disappeared (Halse, 1988). The remaining 25% continue to be threatened by eutrophication and pollution, changes in hydrology and water level patterns, clearing of riparian vegetation, aesthetic disruption and weed invasion (CALM, 1980; Davis and Rolls, 1987; Wrigley et al., 1991; Balla and Davis, 1995). These degradation components are interrelated and largely the consequence of the extensive removal of surrounding vegetation...

Global Climate Change Response Program, Water Yield In Semiarid Environment Under Projected Climate Change, United States Department Of The Interior Feb 1996

Global Climate Change Response Program, Water Yield In Semiarid Environment Under Projected Climate Change, United States Department Of The Interior

Water

This paper presents the practical application of a distributed parameter climate vegetation hydrologic model (CVHM) and its ability to simulate hydrologic response under existing conditions and under assumed CO2-induced climate and vegetation change. Applying the model to the Weber River basin provided a basis for determining the impacts of climate change on the hydrologic response. By using a "what if" scenario this model included the changes in plant transpiration rates and in vegetation cover under a CO2-altered climate change and the effects of these changes on water yield.
