Kabatiella Caulivor, Root Rot Resistance, Bluegreen Aphid, Asessment Of Medicago Murex, Clover Establishment Techniques, D J. Gillespie
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Kabatiella caulivora (clover scorch). In contrast to previous years where all overseas introductions and most crossbreds were tested for resistance to Kabatiella, only selected clovers are now being screened so as to reduce the number requiring testing to a manageable size. Root rot resistance screening. One hundred and seven clovers selected as low in formononetin, tolerant of clover scorch, mid to late season maturity, and reasonable winter vigour were tested at two sites for root rot resistance. Bluegreen aphid (BGA) resistance screening. Sub clover screening for bluegreen aphid resistance ranked from tolerant to susceptible (ratings at 49 days from commencement). …

Medic inoculation experiments – 81ME6, 81GE5. Inoculation trials were conducted at Holleton (81ME6) and Canna (81GE5).The major objectives were: 1. To test the field effectiveness of new strains of Rhizobium meliloti and to compare them with standard strains. 2. To initiate trials aimed at examining the performance of R. meliloti as long term colonisers of mildly acid soils. These trials are the first in a programme aimed at looking at the feasibility of developing acid tolerant strains for large areas of acid soil which are not suitable for growing subterranean clover. The 1981 trials will provide a basis for comparison …

Wind Erosion In The Jerramungup Area 1980-1981, Bryan J. Goddard, M G. Humphry, D J. Carter
Resource management technical reports
An investigation of the wind erosion problem at Jerramungup was conducted by on-farm survey and Landsat interpretation from September to November 1981. Sandblasting and wind erosion were estimated to have seriousloy affected some 44,000 ha in 1980 and over 64,000 ha in 1981. The 1981 damage estimate is conservative, because a much greater area of pasture land was affected by erosion in May-July but achieved vegetative cover by later winter.

Powdery mildew control of grapes with fungicides. Location: Mount Barker Research Station. Black spot and downy mildew of processing peas - 80AL32. Facial eczema investigation. Facial eczema is a recognised myco-toxic disease of grazing stock in New Zealand. It is caused by a fungus Pithomyces chartarum growing on dead litter part of the pasture. The disease has become recognised as a risk to sheep in the Albany Region following reported losses in 1978. A pasture paddock at Cape Riche was sampled weekly by the Animal Division to determine fluctuations in spore numbers of P. chartarum. Comments: The fungus could readily …
