Low Rainfall Pasture Programme, M Ewing
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
The Headquarters of dry land pasture project was transferred to Merredin from Perth for the 1980 season. The aim of the programme is to ascertain the place that legume pasture might play in the dryland farming system. It is aimed to test and introduce improved varieties of pasture species and develop management systems which will improve pasture production and persistence in the low rainfall areas of the wheatbelt. 1. Variety testing.

EARLY MATURING MEDICS Early maturing Libyan lines with some tolerance to bluegreen aphids were sown at 6 sites, five in Western Australia and one in South Australia. Seed yield and hard seed data are currently being collated. Maturity and vigour was assessed at all sites and many of the new introductions are earlier than cv. Harbinger and its equal in vegetative growth. A much larger range (300 lines) was grown at Medina and will be introduced into country sites next year.

This survey was concducted at the request of Colonial Sugar Refineries as a co-operative effort involving the West Australian State Government Departments of Agriculture and Lands and Surveys. C.S.R. are investigating the feasibility of sugar cane production in the Ord River Project Irrigation Area. Part of the project could involve cane production on currently undeveloped sandy soils held under pastoral lease. The object of developing sandy soils is twofold:- i) the sandy soils will require overhead irrigation and it will be possible to mix industrial wastes with the irrigation waters for disposal; ( ii) sandy soils should be trafficable sooner …

Influence Of Planting System On Surface Soil, Physical Conditions And Soil Water Relations, D Tennant
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Influence of planting system on surface soil, physical conditions and soil water relations. The availability of soil water for crop use can this way be influenced by planting system. Various aspects of soil water relations were examined in varying detail at three sites - Wongan Hills, Avondale and Merredin, over the 1979 and 1980 growing seasons. Some of this soil water data are presented here. The Department of Agriculture initiated a programme in 1977 to investigate and compare crop performance under several planting systems. This project was part of this programme and had as its objectives: 1. Measurement of soil …

Essentially, plants with symptoms typical of BYDV are marked in the early spring as well as a similar number without symptoms. Yield differences were obtained both for Clipper Barley and an oats variety. (2) Two pilot experiments using viruliferous aphids were carried out at Mount Barker (79MT20) and at South Perth · (79PE13). Both Rhopalosiphum padi and R. maidis were used. Infection at Mt Barker failed, and therefore no data is presented. The Perth experiment was planted on August 31, 1979. The original plan was to have …
