Status, Self, And Peers: An Ethnography Of Junior High School, Susan Martha Nesheim Allbee

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This report begins with a brief discussion of the overall purpose of social science: to be of service to humankind. To examine and report one's findings is no longer the whole of the responsibility of social scientific research. One must also examine the purpose and objectives of that research. In view of those statements, the objective of this project--the gathering and analysis of information on the culture of junior high school students-- is to gain a better understanding of early adolescence and thereby offer opportunities for insights not only into their culture but to add to the body of knowledge …

Pattern And Variation In Prehistoric Lithic Resource Exploitation In The Passamaquoddy Bay Region, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Anita L. Crotts Dec 1984

Pattern And Variation In Prehistoric Lithic Resource Exploitation In The Passamaquoddy Bay Region, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Anita L. Crotts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines some factors that affected choice and use of lithic resources among prehistoric peoples living within a restricted geographical area during a period of 2500 years. The raw materials of chipped stone tools from six shell middens, habitation sites in the Passamaquoddy Bay region of southwestern New Brunswick, are identified. These include rocks that are atypical of the regional geology. Source areas of indigenous materials are located. Canoe transport made the native resources accessible to the inhabitants of the sites under study, and probably facilitated acquisition of non-native rocks.

The effect that distance had on lithic resource exploitation …

The Upper Mississippi Component At The Fort Meigs Site, Northwest Ohio, With Special Emphasis On The Analysis Of The Ceramic Assemblage, William Evan Rutter Dec 1984

The Upper Mississippi Component At The Fort Meigs Site, Northwest Ohio, With Special Emphasis On The Analysis Of The Ceramic Assemblage, William Evan Rutter

Masters Theses

An introduction to the late prehistoric Upper Mississippian component of the Ft. Meigs site is presented. Site context and history of research are presented, and the non-ceramic artifact assemblage is analyzed and discussed. An in depth analysis of the ceramic assemblage is presented, as well as discussion of the osteological, floral, and faunal remains. Ft. Meigs is then examined from a culture ecological perspective, and is discussed in terms of culture historical data and a theoretical schema. The site is employed to aid in illumination of the process of culture contact in general, and within the western Lake Erie Basin …

A Skeletal Comparison Of Bluewing Teals Versus Greenwing Teals And Mallard Ducks Versus Black Ducks From A Zooarchaeological Perspective, Michael Gordon Cohen Dec 1984

A Skeletal Comparison Of Bluewing Teals Versus Greenwing Teals And Mallard Ducks Versus Black Ducks From A Zooarchaeological Perspective, Michael Gordon Cohen

Masters Theses

The archaeological literature of the Great Lakes region frequently reports the occurrence of faunal and floral remains from the sites under investigation. An analysis of the data indicates that mammal bones greatly outnumber bird bone remains. The hypothesis is suggested that the limited number of identified bird bone remains might be due to the fact that zooarchaeologists are not as familiar with avian bones as they are with mammal bones. For the benefit of zooarchaeologists, bird bone anatomy is reviewed which hopefully will lead to better identification of these remains in the future. The differences between two species of teals …

A Formal Analysis Of Ceramic Vessels From The Schlemmer Site (11-S-382): A Late Woodland/ Mississippian Occupation In St. Clair County, Illinois, Thomas Edward Berres Dec 1984

A Formal Analysis Of Ceramic Vessels From The Schlemmer Site (11-S-382): A Late Woodland/ Mississippian Occupation In St. Clair County, Illinois, Thomas Edward Berres

Masters Theses

The Schlemmer site is located about 20 km southwest of Cahokia Mounds State Park at the southern edge of Dupo, Illinois. This thesis analayzes 166 vessels recovered from 29 pit and structural features at the southern portion of the site. Using a newly defined late prehistoric American Bottom chronology, the Schlemmer vessels were assigned to either Patrick phase (A.D. 600-800) or Lindeman phase (A.D. 950-1000) components. The research discussed in this thesis attempts to describe and explain the formal variation in Schlemmer ceramic vessels through time and space. To this end, the ceramics have undergone both analytical attribute and typological …

A Biological Investigation Of Skeletal Remains From The Mouse Creek Phase And A Comparison With Two Late Mississippian Skeletal Populations From Middle And East Tennessee, Donna Catherine Markland Boyd Dec 1984

A Biological Investigation Of Skeletal Remains From The Mouse Creek Phase And A Comparison With Two Late Mississippian Skeletal Populations From Middle And East Tennessee, Donna Catherine Markland Boyd

Masters Theses

This study examines the biological characteristics of the Late Mississippian Mouse Creek Phase skeletal series of Ledford Island, Rymer and Mouse Creek and relates them to other Late Mississippian skeletal populations (the Toqua and Averbuch samples) by using a comparative and holistic approach. The purpose of the study is to assess the biological relationships between these populations, based on the multidimensional biological variables of paleodemography, stature, paleopathology and craniometrics.

No evidence of significant Mouse Creek Phase demographic stress was found. All of the Mouse Creek Phase site populations exhibited low mortality, probability of death, and crude mortality rates and high …

Exploring Overhill Cherokee Material Culture Patterning, Kurt C. Russ Dec 1984

Exploring Overhill Cherokee Material Culture Patterning, Kurt C. Russ

Masters Theses

Cherokee acculturation as revealed in the patterned material culture remains from the Colonial through the Federal Period is examined. The utilization of a quantitative functional classification scheme facilitates artifact classification and the formulation of assemblage profiles and artifact patterns for the Colonial Period based on data from Chota/Tanasee (40MR2/40MR62), Citico (40MR7), and Tomotley (40MR5), the Federal Period based on data from Chota/ Tanasee (40MR2/40MR62) and Citico (40MR7), and Mialoquo based on data from this site, 40MR3. The expectation that the Mialoquo Pattern would contrast with both the Colonial and Federal Period Patterns and therefore be identified as Revolutionary Period is …
