Client Success Or Failure In A Halfway House, Patrick G. Donnelly, Brian E. Forschner
Client Success Or Failure In A Halfway House, Patrick G. Donnelly, Brian E. Forschner
Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications
Halfway houses today are diverse entities. Seiter, et al. (1977) found that almost 60 percent of the houses in the United States are private nonprofit organizations. One-third were state operations with the remainder being federal, local or private profit organizations. The programs in the houses varied from those providing supervision and custody to those providing a full range of intensive in-house treatments for particular client needs. Some halfway houses handle only particular types of offenders (e.g., drug addicts) while others handle a wide range of offenders.
Latessa and Allen (1982) suggest that the sociodemographic and criminal history backgrounds of clients …

Modeling Subsistence Change In The Late Prehistoric Period In The Interior Lower Coastal Plain Of South Carolina, Mark J. Brooks, Veletta Canouts, Keith M. Derting, Helen W. Haskell, William H. Marquart, Jolee A. Pearson
Anthropological Studies
Recent research on Middle-Late Woodland and Mississippian subsistence-settlement change has modified substantially the traditional models of late fall, coastal to interior transhumance patterns along the southeastern Atlantic Coast. The archeological, ethnohistorical, and environmental data suggest that the interior Lower Coastal Plain of South Carolina was exploited on a year-round basis during the late prehistoric period. These data and those recovered from two archeological sites, which were investigated by the Institute of Archeology and Anthropology for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers' Cooper River Rediversion Project, indicate differences in the subsistence strategies between the Middle-Late Woodland and Mississippian populations, however. …
A Correlation Study Of The A-B Ridge Breadth To Selected Bodily Dimensions, Martha Jane Eblen
A Correlation Study Of The A-B Ridge Breadth To Selected Bodily Dimensions, Martha Jane Eblen
Masters Theses
The correlation of the a-b ridge breadth to 12 anthropometric measurements was investigated in this study. The two samples used were 165 Armenians residing in Australia and 100 American Caucasians. Results of the analysis indicated that the a-b ridge breadth is correlated to seven specific body measurements. In order of decreasing correlation, they were wrist breadth, weight, stature, bicondylar femur, upper arm circumference, biacromial diameter, and calf circumference. It was also evident that bone was the only body size component that was correlated to the a-b ridge breadth.
Dating And Mating : Attitudes Of Middle Eastern Students In The United States, Gabriel Bejjani
Dating And Mating : Attitudes Of Middle Eastern Students In The United States, Gabriel Bejjani
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The need for this study stemmed from the fact that a large number of Middle Eastern students are coming to the United States of America to seek higher education. This has created a social problem for both the Middle Eastern students and their American counterparts because of the great differences between their cultures in the practice of dating and mating.
The objectives of the study were to examine the opinions of a sample of Middle Eastern students in the United States in regards to dating and mating practices. The sample size was one hundred students.

Contextual Studies Of The Middle Archaic Component At Cave Spring In Middle Tennessee, Jack L. Hofman
Contextual Studies Of The Middle Archaic Component At Cave Spring In Middle Tennessee, Jack L. Hofman
Masters Theses
Research in 1980 and 1981 at the Cave Spring site, located on the Duck River in the Nashville Basin of Middle Tennessee, revealed a buried paleosol in a Holocene terrace which contained charcoal, river gravel and chipped stone artifacts. Radiocarbon dates from this buried stratum range from 6500 to 7300 years before present. Evaluating the potential of this buried deposit for yielding behaviorally significant information depended upon learning (1) whether the cultural materials were undisturbed or were redeposited by the river, (2) whether one or several periods of deposition or occupation were represented, and (3) whether material from one or …

Spontaneous Abortion: Risk Factors Among Wic Participants In Cherokee, North Carolina, Deann Lee Stivers
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the rate and contributing factors of spontaneous abortion among participants in the Cherokee WIC Program. The data were collected from two sources: WIC Certification Records and personal interviews. The sample (N=500) consisted of both Indian (N=433) and Caucasian (N=67) women who participated in the Cherokee WIC Program from July 1976 to March 1982.
The spontaneous abortion rate for the total population studied is 24.89%, while the national rate of spontaneous abortion reported in the literature ranges from 10% to 20%. The Caucasian participants (N=67) in this study experience a higher rate (40.0%) …
Lithic Raw Material Variability In The Central Duck River Basin: Reflections Of Middle And Late Archaic Organizational Strategies, Daniel S. Amick
Lithic Raw Material Variability In The Central Duck River Basin: Reflections Of Middle And Late Archaic Organizational Strategies, Daniel S. Amick
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to develop a model for understanding prehistoric chipped-stone debris distribution in the central Duck River Basin region located in Middle Tennessee. The model design consists of theoretical and empirical observations which are integrated to form an interpretive framework. Seven lithic assemblages ranging from Middle to Late Archaic periods (ca. 7000 to 3000 years B.P.) in age were analyzed to assess the model.
The first stage of model-building was the development of a theoretical foundation for approaching the problem. A cultural adaptation paradigm is the foundation cornerstone. Understanding cultural process and organization are emphasized. Lithic …

Two Hairdressers: Artistry & Communication, Julie Hauri-Foster
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This paper is a study of two artists. They are hairdressers who are part of mainstream American culture. Juanita Sublett has been a hairdresser for twenty years, and has had basically the same clientele for that time. Her true artistry is not in the technical aspect of hairdos, but in the creation of a setting in which her clients wish to be.
John Hopfensperger has been a hairdresser for eight years. He entered beauty school because he could be supported by his parents without having the academic pressures of college. After completing beauty school he had no intention of becoming …

Archeological And Historical Investigations At 41tt310, Lake Bob Sandlin State Park, Titus County, Texas, Daniel J. Prikryl, Kathleen Gilmore, Ross C. Fields, Nancy Reese
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
In November and December 1983, archeological and historical research was carried out at site 41TT310 in the proposed Lake Bob Sandlin State Park, Titus County, Texas. The project was sponsored by the Texas ParkS and Wildlife Department and was prompted by the need to assess the significance of site 41TT310 to aid in planning park development. The fieldwork entailed excavating 21 I-by-l-m test pits to define the site limits and to gather oata on site content. The historical research involved a literature ana archival search ana informant interviews to try to determine the location of a Republ ie of Texas-era …

New Jersey Outlaws Steel-Jaw, Leghold Trap
Close Up Reports
It took almost two decades of dedicated struggle and hundreds of thousands of dollars, but we finally did it! The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), with the help of our members, other organizations, and local humane groups, succeeded in getting New Jersey to outlaw the steel-jaw, leghold trap! By the fall of 1985, it will be illegal for anyone to manufacture, sell, possess, or use the trap in that state. New Jersey's wildlife will be able to roam the woodlands and bogs free from the threat of trap-caused mutilation or death.
As monumental as New Jersey's victory is, …
