Dermatoglyphic Variability In Armenian Fingertips And Palms: A Directional Asymmetry Approach To Identify Developmental Stress, Cleone Hart Hawkinson Jun 1981

Dermatoglyphic Variability In Armenian Fingertips And Palms: A Directional Asymmetry Approach To Identify Developmental Stress, Cleone Hart Hawkinson

Masters Theses

The dermatoglyphic variability of the fingertips and palms of an Armenian sample was investigated. The sample consisted of 228 stressed and unstressed individuals. Prenatal stress due to severe physical and nutritional deprivation was not recorded in the developing dermal ridge system in the form of increased directional asymmetry or variation in ridge breadth. No intergenerational effect of stress on the dermal ridge system was identified. A new palmar variable, b-c ridge breadth, was developed and incorporated into the analysis.

The A-B Dermatoglyphic Ridge Breadth: An Indication Of Developmental Significance, Anne Hawkins Prisock Jun 1981

The A-B Dermatoglyphic Ridge Breadth: An Indication Of Developmental Significance, Anne Hawkins Prisock

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was threefold: to present a-b ridge breadth data on various populations; to synthesize factors influencing the a-b ridge breadth; and to suggest areas of developmental significance which are important in the a-b ridge breadth determination. The a-b ridge breadths of ten sample groups representing Whites, Blacks, Amerindians, and Indians were collected and determined.

The mean a-b ridge breadths were determined for each of the ten sample populations. These a-b ridge breadths were compared with previously published a-b ridge breadth data. The primary procedure used in data analysis was analysis of variance (ANOVA). The groups were …

They'd Have The Biggest Time You Ever Saw: Square Dances As Settings For Community Social Interaction In Trigg County, Kentucky Ca. 1920-1979, Elizabeth Harzoff

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study focuses upon dance events, those occasions which have as their purpose the convening of persons to square dance or play party games which resemble square dances. Four different forms of these events were identified in Trigg County, Kentucky: neighborhood dances, play-parties, picnics and barbecues and public dances. I have described them from a historical perspective, examining the social interactions that occurred during the events.

The major portion of the information presented was gathered through interviews with current and past residents of this county. The descriptions span the years from the turn of the twentieth century to the 1970s. …

Henna: Uses Of It In The Middle East And North Africa, Diane M. Humphrey-Newell May 1981

Henna: Uses Of It In The Middle East And North Africa, Diane M. Humphrey-Newell

Dissertations and Theses

Since gradually replacing red ochre as a dye in ancient Egypt, henna has been cultivated throughout the Middle East and North Africa. Traditional uses dealing with body art and medicine were associated with traits commonly connected with the color red, the dichotomies of life and death, good and evil. Today, these traits have all but disappeared while henna's use as a cosmetic dye, an embellishment, has remained prevalent in some regions. There can be no doubt that many uses and symbolisms attached to uses have gone unrecorded, been forgotten, and are irretrievable. The purpose of this research was to preserve …

Middle Woodland Ceramics Of Northwestern Indiana And Western Michigan, William L. Mangold Apr 1981

Middle Woodland Ceramics Of Northwestern Indiana And Western Michigan, William L. Mangold

Masters Theses

Much information regarding the Middle Woodland occupation of northwestern Indiana and western Michigan has been recovered since the definition of the Goodall Focus by Quimby (1941a). The object of this report is to undertake a detailed stylistic analysis of the ceramic assemblages from Middle Woodland sites, including the vessels used to elucidate Middle Woodland cultural relationships within this region. An attempt is made to establish stylistic zones through the use of typological and attribute analysis.

The Paleoethnobotany Of The Upper Mississippi Component At The Elam Site, A Seasonal Encampment On The Lower Kalamazoo River, Kathryn E. Parachini

Masters Theses

Carbonized floral remains from the Elam site (20AE195) located on the Kalamazoo River in Allegan County, Michigan are identified and analyzed in terms of the local Upper Mississippian subsistence system. The function of Elam as a specialized activity locus in the seasonal round of a late prehistoric people is examined. Interpretations of the botanical data permit hypothetical reconstruction of vegetation and natural ecosystems in the site vicinity as they were prior to Euro-American contact. A warm weather seasonal re-occupation of several months duration is indicated, with intensive exploitation of several plant and animal resources abundant in the riverine and marsh …

Northeast Folklore Society Newsletter

This statement by Sandy Ives at a meeting of the Maine State Commission on the Arts and Humanities, Orono, Maine, February, 1981.

"I have no desire either to tilt windmills on the one hand or to defend the obvious on the other, yet I will risk both to make a simple plea not so much for greater breadth as for greater depth in support for the arts, for reaching out to help more people celebrate what it is in life that touches them and moves them to create significant forms that can be shared with others. I am not talking …

Morphological Changes On The Axillary Border Of The Scapula With Special Reference To The Neandertal Problem, Carol Baratz Dittner-Plasil Mar 1981

Morphological Changes On The Axillary Border Of The Scapula With Special Reference To The Neandertal Problem, Carol Baratz Dittner-Plasil

Doctoral Dissertations

This study is an effort to determine the causes of the various morphologies of the axillary border of the modern human scapula and to relate the results to the unusual morphology of Neandertal scapulae.

Two-thirds of known Neandertal scapulae exhibit a dorsal sulcus on the axillary border: the remainder have a double sulcus (Chancelade pattern) and only one exhibits a ventral sulcus. The ventral sulcus is predominant on the scapulae of anatomically modern hominids where the Chancelade pattern is also present in varying frequencies.

Quantitative and qualitative analyses were performed on data derived from skeletal material of five modern human …

The Temascal And Humoral Medicine In Santa Cruz Mixtepec, Juxtlahuaca, Oaxaca, Mexico, Thomas J. Ibach Mar 1981

The Temascal And Humoral Medicine In Santa Cruz Mixtepec, Juxtlahuaca, Oaxaca, Mexico, Thomas J. Ibach

Masters Theses

This investigation reports on the present day use of the sweatbath among an indigenous people in Mexico. The purpose of this thesis was to provide evidence that aboriginal medicine in Mexico contained elements which were based on sets of opposing forces, and that these elements are present in the curing rites of the people of Santa Cruz Mixtepec.

Traditional views of the disease causation and curing are described with particular attention given to the postpartum sweatbath ritual or temascal. A comparison of this ritual in Santa Cruz Mixtepec to that seen in neighboring communities suggests that humoral medicine is …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Additional archeological investigations and monitoring of restoration activities at the Sam Houston Home in Huntsville, Texas, are described in this report prepared by Jody C. Pevey. The original location of the Law Office was not found, but significant features relating to the Houston Home were discovered. Removal of the e¥isting east chimney and pad revealed the remnants of an earlier brick chimney pad with associated brick hearth supports. The types of bricks, mortar and construction techniques appear to be the same as those noted in a series of exterior and interior brick piers found along the south side of the …

People At Zoos: A Sociological Approach, Edward G. Ludwig Jan 1981

People At Zoos: A Sociological Approach, Edward G. Ludwig

Zoos and Aquariums Collection

This is a participant observation study of animal/human relationships at zoos. Both zoo personnel and zoo visitors were observed intensively over a period of four months and less intensively for two years. While young zoo employees tended to be naturalistic, ecologistic and scientistic in their value orientation toward animals, these attitudes were often frustrated by the day to day routines of the job involving hosing and feeding, and the realities of limitations placed upon zoos by strained budgets and antiquated buildings. The public tended to be an additional source of frustration due to their apparent lack of sensitivity and desire …

The Metaphysics Of Anthropocentrism: A Review Of Paul Ehrenfeld's "The Arrogance Of Humanism" And Mary Midgley's "Beast And Man", Bernard E. Rollin

Attitudes Towards Animals Collection

Our attitudes and behavior toward nature and toward other forms of life are clearly in the forefront of contemporary ethical concern. It thus becomes necessary to examine critically the metaphysics which has traditionally grounded these attitudes. Unquestionably, the key feature of the dominant underlying conceptual scheme has been the positing of a clear-cut dichotomy between man and the natural world. For most of the Greeks, man is radically separated from nature- he lives in the realm of nomos, convention, somehow above the realm of physis, nature. He can reason, communicate, choose, create a social order, apprehend ultimate reality, and even …

Where To Put Your Choker, Roger A. Mugford Jan 1981

Where To Put Your Choker, Roger A. Mugford

Pets Collection

The choke chain has come to be regarded as an indispensable aid to training dogs, but even the most time-hallowed practices deserve an occasional critical review. The author has recently completed an investigation into the uses and abuses of choke chains, and failed to find any benefit from using a choker rather than a conventional leather collar. Indeed, there are some very considerable dangers and disadvantages associated with the device. These charges may sound like heresy to many dog-trainers, but to others, it may strike a sympathetic chord.

An Assessment Of Archeological Sites 41wy71 And 41wy72, Willacy County, Texas, D. William Day

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Test excavations at two prehistoric archeological sites in eastern Willacy County, Texas, were conducted by Prewitt and Associates, Inc. during Ma y and July of 1981. The purpose of the investigations at sites 41WY71 and 41WY72 was to assess the potential eligibility of the sites for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. It is concluded that site 41WY71 does not warrant nomination to the Register, but that site 41WY72 is of sufficient importance that it should be considered to be eligible for nomination to the Register.

Current work at these two sites has been accomplished under terms of …

Archaeological Investigations At The San Pedro Aceqnia San Antonio, Texas, Augustine J. Frkuska Jr.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The irrigation system in San Antonio was an integral part of its early history. Within the San Antonio area irrigation was a necessity to extend the planting season. An extended planting season would allow for diversified crops with different harvesting periods. The first municipal irrigation system was the San Pedro Acequia. It was constructed to serve the town with fresh water for household use and agricultural purposes. As the population increased and technology improved, the acequias changed in both appearance and function. In time, the San Pedro Acequia system became part of San Antonio's forgotten past.

Recently, excavations on the …
