In early May 1981, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted test excavations at Mission de la Espada. In an area north of the church, planned for future parking, three test units were excavated to determine the soil stratification and whether construction would impact architectural or cultural features. No indications of such features was found. In an area outside the east wall, where apparent wall foundations appear in aerial photographs, testing revealed that all but a few traces of a structure built in the early 1900s have since been removed.

A history was composed of the project area in relation to that of the Republic and State of Texas. A structural history of the town of Velasco was compiled from archival and historical research. In July 1981, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted an archaeological survey of power line right-of-ways in Schleicher and Crockett Counties. The survey was performed for the Southwest Electric Cooperative, Inc. Eight archaeological sites were located during this project. Three sites (41 SL 5, 41 SL 8, and 41 SL 9) are recommended for additional documentation if they are to be additionally disturbed. The other sites found need no further work.

In October 1980, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, under contract to Fisher, Harden and Fisher, Inc., completed an archaeological survey of a proposed locality for solution uranium mining wells in southeastern Webb County, Texas. This survey produced evidence of Middle Archaic to Late Archaic prehistoric sites in the area. Twelve archaeological sites were documented. Five of these sites, located in the proposed mining area, were totally collected and mapped. The other seven sites outside of the proposed mining area were mapped and only those sites with cultural/historical significance were collected. No …

Six prehistoric sites along the proposed route of U.S. Highway 54 in El Paso County, Texas, were tested during the spring and summer of 1981. No further work is recommended at four of these sites due to the paucity of recovered materials and the general deflated and eroded nature of the sites.

Two sites are recommended for further work. Testing of Site 41EP321 produced two probable pithouse features with buried charcoal lenses and possible post holes as well as numerous varied artifacts including Mimbres Black-on-White, Chupardero Black-on-White, El Paso Brown, and El Paso Polychrome pottery types. Sites were recorded and the collected artifacts described and classified. An intensive cultural resource survey was carried out on approximately 2544 hectares (6285 acres) of the proposed Choke Canyon Reservoir by the Cultural Resources Institute (CRI) of Texas Tech University from August through October 1977. The project was undertaken in response to needs of the Bureau of Reclamation. This report is one of a multivolume study.'concerning the area's cultural resources. During the 1977 survey, 113 archaeological sites, 42 low density artifact scatters, and five isolated finds were located and recorded. A no-collection policy was maintained, except isolated finds. Two sites in McCulloch County, Texas, Sites 41MK28 and 41MK29, were tested in August, 1981, and were found to have very shallow of surface deposits. Site 41MK28 proved to be a badly eroded surface site. That portion of Site 41MK29 which lay in the proposed right-of-way was found to be already destroyed by previous root plowing and fire lane construction activities. Further excavation is not recommended at either site because of the disturbed nature of the sites and the lack of depth to the deposits.

The Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted an intensive surface survey aimed at location and evaluation of cultural resources in portions of the Choke Canyon Reservoir in Live Oak and McMullen Counties, Texas. The survey was conducted between May and September 1979. The area examined consists of approximately 8400 acres (3400 hectares) located in areas not previously available for survey. A total of 94 archaeological sites, 86 low density scatters, and 20 isolated finds was recorded. In 1979 Western Michigan University undertook the Phase I archae.ological survey of 20 miles along the proposed route of US-31, Matthew Road to I-94, in Berrien County, Michigan. A report on this work by Elizabeth Garland and William Mangold was submitted to the Michigan Department of Transportation and the Michigan Department of State in May, 1980 (Garland and Mangold 1980).

The 1980 Settlement Pattern Survey in Allegan County, Michigan observed and recorded 75 prehistoric sites representing a total of 81 components. This report describes and evaluates these sites and the archaeological materials recovered from them. Site location relative to second and third order streams in this portion of the Lower Kalamazoo River basin is evaluated, and the importance of this relationship in comparison with soil association and landform is assessed.

In 1980 the Kalamazoo Basin Survey moved upstream into the upper valley of Calhoun and Jackson Counties, establishing and investigating three transects located between the communities of Battle Creek on the west and Concord on the east (Fig. 1). Transect A encompasses 94.5 km² of Convis, Emmett, Marshall and Pennfield Townships in Calhoun County. A 20-day field/informant type of archaeological survey was performed on a 13 section corridor in Park and Mendon townships in St. Joseph County and section 32 of Brady Township in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. This survey universe bordered on portions of the Portage River and its tributaries and along the shores of Portage and Fishers lakes. Twenty-nine prehistoric human occupation sites were located, described and recorded during the survey, five of which had been previously known (four unrecorded).
