Injuries To Birds Of Prey Caught In Leghold Traps, Katherine Durham
Injuries To Birds Of Prey Caught In Leghold Traps, Katherine Durham
Conservation Collection
173 birds of prey, including 32 Bald Eagles, have been treated for trapping injuries at the University of Minnesota Raptor Research and Rehabilitation Program since 1972. These were birds caught primarily in "open" bait /eghold sets incidental to furbearer trapping in the Minnesota region. The differential outcome of the injuries with respect to crippling or mortality is presented for large versus small raptors, toe versus leg injuries, and fracture of the leg versus soft tissue damage only.
There is only limited potential for mitigating the effects of trapping injuries to raptors because of the irreversible soft tissue damage usually associated …
A Strategy For Dog-Owner Education, Ian Dunbar
A Strategy For Dog-Owner Education, Ian Dunbar
Animal Welfare Collection
By conservative estimates, the humane societies and societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals in the United States euthanize over 15 million pets each year. It is a great shame that people who have devoted their lives to animals should be forced to destroy the majority of animals that pass through their hands. In addition, the Pet Food Institute's 1975 Survey revealed that a high percentage of pet owners were unsatisfied with their animals and ended up giving them away, taking them to animal shelters, or losing them in accidents. It would appear that only a minority of pets …

Heat Treatment Of Lithic Raw Materials: Archaeological Detection And Technological Interpretation, Mary Beth D. Trubitt
Heat Treatment Of Lithic Raw Materials: Archaeological Detection And Technological Interpretation, Mary Beth D. Trubitt
Honors Papers
A lithic technology consists of a set of techniques for shaping and working stone, and a knowledge of the properties and characteristics of the materials utilized. Lithic technology is the foundation of non-metallurgical cultures; stone is directly used in making many types of stone tools as well as indirectly in fashioning tools from other substances. Lithic technology is an important aspect for the archaeologist to study, if only for the practical consideration that on most prehistoric sites, stone tools and debitage are the only material culture preserved. Reconstruction of the lithic system aids not only in the technological interpretation of …
A Response To Dr. Ian Dunbar, Graham Henderson
A Response To Dr. Ian Dunbar, Graham Henderson
Pets Collection
In his article, "A Strategy for Dog Owner Education," (2(1):13-15, 1981), Dr. Ian Dunbar reveals his masterplan: Pet owners are not, he claims, irresponsible, they are for the most part merely "ignorant." We must, therefor, educate them, and to do this we must somehow contrive to have potential pet owners apply for a license before they may obtain their dog. At the same time as this initial application is made, the hopeful candidate would be issued with an information package, the content of which he or she would be tested on at some indeterminate future date. Although a failure to …
Animals In Film And Television, D. B. Wilkins
Animals In Film And Television, D. B. Wilkins
Sports and Entertainment Collection
People have always had a fascination for large, "exotic" types of animals and as a result many zoos were set up all over Europe and North America. For many years there was a great deal of money to be made from exhibiting animals, and very little regard was paid to their welfare.
With the advent of cinema and television we have come to appreciate these animals in their own environment. Some modern zoos have attempted, therefore, to reproduce a type of natural surrounding for the larger species of animal, but the compromise between providing an animal with its natural environment …

In 1862, Capt. Ketchem from Fort Baker noted in his records that he received the assistance of the ranchers in Hettenshaw in rounding up the Indians. Among them were Jim Willburn, Jim Graham and Steve Fleming. Fleming acted as a guide for the soldiers and helped to bring in Chief Lassik and his band from the area in southwest Trinity known as Red and Black Lassic or simply the Lassics. An entry in the military records which reads, “Willburn and Fleming report the loss of many stock.”

The year of the Maine Folklife Survey is drawing to a close at the end of January. We are in the wrap-up phase, having completed fieldwork in October. Six field workers visited some 300 homes throughout the State, and worked in some 130 townships in every county over the summer, gathering information of all kinds from axe handle making to step dancing to baking bean-hole beans. People have been marvelously friendly, have understood why we were gathering traditional materials, and certainly have been helpful. Though we have felt stretched thin on budget and time to get to see and meet …
A Comparison Of Late Prehistoric Dallas And Overhill Cherokee Subsistence Strategies In The Little Tennessee River Valley, Arthur E. Bogan
A Comparison Of Late Prehistoric Dallas And Overhill Cherokee Subsistence Strategies In The Little Tennessee River Valley, Arthur E. Bogan
Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines the late Mississippian Dallas Focus and historic Overhill Cherokee occupations at the archaeological site of Toqua (4OMR6), Monroe County, Tennessee. The faunal remains from the Dallas occupation were subdivided according to two mounds and four village areas to test propositions relevant to the patterning of faunal remains from a chiefdom level society. These propositions were generated from the archaeological correlates of chiefdoms proposed by Peebles and Kuss. The distribution of faunal remains were examined from the floors of two domestic and one special function structures, and it was possible to establish regular patterns of refuse accumulation. The …

An Analysis Of The Faunal Remains From The Schwerdt Site, A Late Prehistoric Encampment In Allegan County, Michigan, Michael J. Higgins
Masters Theses
Analysis of faunal remains from the Schwerdt site, a fifteenth century encampment on the Kalamazoo River, reveals a temporary late spring occupation with an exploitative strategy aimed primarily at the spawning sturgeon. The position of Schwerdt in a larger subsistence/ settlement system is examined through comparisons with other contemporaneous sites in the southeastern Lake Michigan region. Changes in subsistence strategies on the northern periphery of effective maize agriculture.
An Assessment Of Anthropology In The Elementary Social Studies Curriculum In Tennessee, Denise Shannon Woodhall Wilkinson
An Assessment Of Anthropology In The Elementary Social Studies Curriculum In Tennessee, Denise Shannon Woodhall Wilkinson
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which anthropology is presently included in public elementary schools in Tennessee and to identify factors which tend to favor or disfavor its inclusion. Six factors were proposed as being likely influences determining whether or not anthropology is taught in Tennessee's public elementary schools. A questionnaire was devised in relation to these six factors and was sent to 302 randomly selected elementary schools across the state.
Of the 302 questionnaires which were sent, 163 (54%) were returned and analyzed. It was determined that 62% of those teachers in the sample …
