The George C. Davis Site, Cherokee County, Texas: Spring 1980 Archeological Investigations, Ross C. Fields, J. Peter Thurmond
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The results of archeological investigations in portions of the George C. Davis Site are presented in this report prepared by Ross Fields and J. Peter Thurmond . Stringent contract requirements and the provisions of Texas Antiquities Permit No. 237 dictate that this report be brief and descriptive in nature. Requirements such as inclusion of a detailed site investigation history and environmental data were excluded and extensive excavations were stressed in preference to detailed analyses and comparisons. Field investigations were limited by contract to 20 working days and the analysis/write-up to 10 working days. The governing research design was prepared by …

The Skeletal Biology Of The Caddo Indians Of The Kaufman-Williams Site, Red River County, Texas, Carol Jackson Loveland
The Skeletal Biology Of The Caddo Indians Of The Kaufman-Williams Site, Red River County, Texas, Carol Jackson Loveland
Doctoral Dissertations
A comprehensive biological analysis of the skeletal remains from the Kaufman-Williams site, 41RR16, Red River County, Texas, was conducted. The primary purpose of the investigation was to expand our knowledge about the biological variability found among the prehistoric Caddo. Cranial and postcranial measurements were taken, and indices were calculated. Several non-metrical characters were observed. The health status of the group was assessed based upon the pathological conditions noted in the bones. Cranial deformation was studied in detail, particularly its effect on craniofacial measurements.
A further analysis attempted to relate the skeletal material from the Kaufman-Williams site to Caddoan skeletal samples …

The Aaron Shelton Site (40cf69): A Multicomponent Site In The Lower Normandy Reservoir, Mark J. Wagner
Masters Theses
The Aaron Shelton site (40CF69) was a multicomponent site in the upper Duck Valley which was excavated by The University of Tennessee in early summer of 1975. A total of fifty-five features and sixty postholes was excavated at the site with four cultural components, Late Archaic through Late Woodland, being defined. An analysis and description of all prehistoric cultural activity at the Aaron Shelton site are presented with an emphasis on the McFarland phase occupation. The McFarland phase settlement patterns at 40CF69 indicate that during the early Middle Woodland period the Aaron Shelton site was occupied by minimal, probably nuclear, …
Prehistoric Soapstone Procurement In Northwestern South Carolina, Terry Andrew Ferguson
Prehistoric Soapstone Procurement In Northwestern South Carolina, Terry Andrew Ferguson
Masters Theses
During 1978 and 1979 an archeological survey was conducted near Spartanburg, South Carolina in an area containing an extensive zone of soapstone deposits from which soapstone was prehistorically quarried. The study area encompassed approximately 16 km2 east of the city of Spartanburg, north of the town of Pacolet and along the Pacolet River. The study located 18 prehistoric soapstone quarries and 17 non-quarry sites. Previous soapstone research has suggested several hypothetical quarrying procedures and reduction sequences. A generalized reduction sequence model for soapstone vessel manufacture based on these suggested procedures was utilized to evaluate the data recovered during the …

An Archeological Survey And Testing Program Along Six Mile Creek, Lexington County, South Carolina, Michael A. Harmon
Research Manuscript Series
An archeological survey for the proposed sewage system improvements project by the Town of Springdale located 18 archeological sites. The survey involved an on-the-ground inspection of a 50 foot wide corridor along Six Mile Creek in the Sand Hills region of central South Carolina. Eleven of the sites represent prehistoric occupation: Early and Middle Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian periods. Nineteenth and twentieth century homesites, a quarry, and an old roadbed were recorded also. These sites are interpreted and evaluated with reference to a predictive model. Four of the sites which will be directly impacted by the proposed sewer line construction …

Home, Loved Ones & Heaven: Folk Expressin In The Songs Of Katherine O'Neill Peters Sturgill, George Reynolds
Home, Loved Ones & Heaven: Folk Expressin In The Songs Of Katherine O'Neill Peters Sturgill, George Reynolds
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Formation, expression, and function of world view were examined in the life and compositions of folk musician, Katherine O'Neill Peters Sturgill. It was seen that the institutions of home, loved ones, and heaven were dominant themes in the formation of her world view. When twenty-two of Kate's gospel and sentimental song compositions were examined for thematic content, they were found to reflect the predominant formative influences in Kate's life. An interpretive model was developed showing home, loved ones, and heaven to be unified themes in a concept of sacred order--a concept which stood to oppose and defend against the banal …

Fluctuating Dental Asymmetry And Stress At The Averbuch Site (40dv60), Nashville, Tennessee, Mark F. Guagliardo
Masters Theses
There may exist bilateral asymmetry in tooth size in which neither side tends to be larger within a population. Such a bilaterally random distribution of asymmetry is called fluctuating dental asymmetry. One of its major causes is the exposure of individuals to stress during the time of tooth formation. Stressors known to increase fluctuating dental asymmetry are protein deficiency, heat, cold, and noise; there are probably many others as yet undiscovered.
This study explores the patterns of fluctuating dental asymmetry at the Averbuch site, a Mississippian village and three cemeteries near Nashville, Tennessee. The effects of tooth size, dentition type, …

Small Fishing Ports In Southern New England, Report To The National Science Foundation, Volume Ib, James Acheson, John T. Poggie Jr., Richard B. Pollnac
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
Social and cultural aspects of fisheries management were examined to establish basic data on the fishing communities and fisheries of southern New England. Five small ports were selected for study--Newport, Chatham, and Westport, Massachusetts; Newport, Rhode Island; and Stonington, Connecticut. These ports differ in terms of local, social, and geographical conditions, fishing styles, and emphases. Results of the study show that these ports act as a backup for the industry as a whole by (1) providing sources of fish for local markets; (2) using low energy models which reduce energy costs; (3) allowing individual fishermen a greater opportunity to find …
