Archaeological Reports

The 1979 Settlement Pattern Survey (SPS 79) in Allegan County, Michigan observed and recorded a total of 74 prehistoric sites which revealed 10 identifiable components. The majority of sites were small lithic scatters which did not yield culturally diagnostic artifacts. In general the results of this field season conformed with expectations based upon soils, landform and drainage patterns in the survey universe. This report describes and evaluates the significance of the archaeologi ca 1 data recovered.

Social Organization And Water Control Among The Borana Of Southern Ethiopia, Johan. Helland Jan 1980

Social Organization And Water Control Among The Borana Of Southern Ethiopia, Johan. Helland

Institute for Development Anthropology Papers

The long-term success of pastoral production systems depends on the adjustment of the human and livestock populations, which are potentially expanding, to the range resource, which is finite. Among the Borana of southern Ethiopia, this adjustment has been achieved through a complex socio-political system controlling human reproduction and the maintenance and use of dry-season wells. A complex system of generation classes, known as Gada, helps limit population expansion, and access to water during the dry season is controlled by well councils whose membership and function are based on a flexible, but well defined, system of traditional rules.

A Review Of The Initial Coalescent Variant, Greg Fox

Nebraska Anthropologist

The Initial Coalescent Variant of the Middle Missouri Sub-area (Lehmer 1971) poses many problems for archeologists working with the culture history of the Central/Northern Plains Areas. The Initial Coalescent should not, however, be considered as strictly confined to the localities of the Big Bend Dam and Pierre, South Dakota, as Lehmer (1971) suggests. Manifestations of this cultural complex can be found as far away as the Niobrara River valley in Boyd County, Nebraska at the Lynch Site (25BD1) (Caldwell 1966). This site has been grouped with the prototype Initial Coalescent site, the Arzberger Site (39HU6), into a taxonomic unit known …

Cultural Ecology: A Brief Overview, Michael C. Gunn Jan 1980

Cultural Ecology: A Brief Overview, Michael C. Gunn

Nebraska Anthropologist

Cultural ecology is based on the interaction of culture, man and environment. To the understanding of this relationship the present paper discusses the origin and development of cultural ecology, the various applications and techniques of cultural ecology by the anthropological discipline, and finally, criticisms and future goals of an ecological anthropology.

Ecology is not an anthropological subdiscipline, nor is it even a standardized approach in anthropology (Bates, 1953). Ecology may be defined as the science dealing with the study of entire assemblages of living organisms and their physical milieus, which together constitute integrated systems (Anderson, 1973:182). More simply, ecology is …

The Huff Site A Reconstruction Of Past Lifeways, Emery Ladean Mehrer Jan 1980

The Huff Site A Reconstruction Of Past Lifeways, Emery Ladean Mehrer

Nebraska Anthropologist

The purpose of this paper is to construct, from available literature, the possible social structure of the inhabitants of the Huff Site (32MO11). Although archeology is termed as the study of the human past, with its objectives being construction of cultural chronology, reconstruction of past lifeways, and discovery of processes that underlie and condition human behavior, I feel that many times these objectives are either overlooked or only in part covered. This paper will serve as an example of possible inferences which can be made from archeological and historical data. Some inferences or hypotheses which are made in this paper …

The Ministry Of Agriculture's Involvement With Animal Welfare, Roy Moss

Agribusiness Collection

Keeping livestock healthy is primarily the responsibility of owners. Indeed, if they did not do so they would certainly not make a profit. Advice on the prevention, treatment and possible cure of disease is the responsibility of the veterinary surgeon. Prevention of physical damage to animals and their adoption of abnormal behavior caused by confinement which prevents them from exercising their inherited behavioral patterns is the joint responsibility of the ethologist, the technologist who designs the confinement system and ancillary equipment, the livestock husbandry specialist, the veterinary surgeon and the owner. If society also decides that there is a need …

Attitudes Of Secondary School Students In Israel Toward The Use Of Living Organisms In The Study Of Biology, Pinchas Tamir, Aliza Hamo Jan 1980

Attitudes Of Secondary School Students In Israel Toward The Use Of Living Organisms In The Study Of Biology, Pinchas Tamir, Aliza Hamo

Attitudes Towards Animals Collection

The study deals with attitudes and views of 456 Israeli students in grades 7, 9, and 11 regarding the use of living animals in research and biology instruction. It was found that most students are interested in studying Jive animals through direct observation and experiment and feel that this kind of learning is superior to learning from secondary sources. At the same time, however, most students exhibit concern for and affection toward living organisms in general and higher animals, especially pets and "beneficial" animals, in particular. The need to consider both sides of the issue is highlighted, and practical implications …

Multinational Enterprise And Urbanism, Alvin W. Wolfe Jan 1980

Multinational Enterprise And Urbanism, Alvin W. Wolfe

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper addresses the possibility that, in the future, cities may experience greater independence of nation-states than has been the case heretofore. The weakening of states relative to other institutions involved in the development of a supranational level of sociocultural integration makes possible a new kind of interdependence between multinational enterprises and urban communities. In this developing future, cities can provide the loci for certain operations of what is essentially a supranational system based on function rather than on territory.

The first part of the paper is a reminder that in anthropology the city has been seen primarily as a …

Human And Cultural Ecology: A Partial Bibliography, Michael C. Gunn Jan 1980

Human And Cultural Ecology: A Partial Bibliography, Michael C. Gunn

Nebraska Anthropologist

The following bibliography represents a partial listing of books and articles dealing with human and cultural ecology. Central to this bibliography are titles dealing with the conceptual and methodological aspects of human/cultural ecology as applicable to the broad field of anthropology. Also of primary importance are titles dealing with the anthropological use of population demography. Topics of related interest (general ecology, human adaption, bioenergetics, etc.) are represented by selected titles. While the bibliography falls far short of total citation of all articles dealing with the aforementioned topics, it should provide a firm base upon which the student or researcher may …

Connoisseurs Of Caviar, Mona Thopson Jan 1980

Connoisseurs Of Caviar, Mona Thopson

Nebraska Anthropologist

Most of the published works concerning the Woodland burial mound complex of the Rainy River District of northern Minnesota and contiguous Ontario pertain to defining the culture history of this region. More specifically, they have focused on the intra and inter site variability of ceramic types (Wilford 1955, Stoltman 1973, 1974, Lugenbeal 1978). These studies have defined a detailed culture history of the Middle (Laurel) and Late Woodland (Blackduck) phases of this region. Currently, the information which has been published on the burial mound complex have shed little light on the economic, social and political systems of the prehistoric peoples …

Aboriginal Clay Figurines From The Upper Rogue Valley In Southwestern Oregon, Lyman Patrick Deich Jan 1980

Aboriginal Clay Figurines From The Upper Rogue Valley In Southwestern Oregon, Lyman Patrick Deich

Dissertations and Theses

A study of 80 clay figurines from aboriginal sites in the upper Rogue River Valley in southwestern Oregon fails to reveal any connection with other figurines found in the Pacific Northwest and northern California. A preference for animal rather than human representations is demonstrated. The temporal distribution of the figurines is not known, but spatial distribution appears roughly coextensive with territories occupied by the upland Takelma at the time of Euro-American contact during the second quarter of the nineteenth century.

Late Pleistocene And Recent Archaeology And Geomorphology Of The South Shore Of Harney Lake, Oregon, Keith Donald Gehr Jan 1980

Late Pleistocene And Recent Archaeology And Geomorphology Of The South Shore Of Harney Lake, Oregon, Keith Donald Gehr

Dissertations and Theses

The present study was a response to the discovery of two artifacts found in a ditch wall near Harney Lake, Oregon. These were lying on a buried lake floor that appeared to be of late Pleistocene or early Recent age. Other sediments exposed in the ditch seemed to relate to at least some of the phases of the pluvial lake sequence in the Harney Basin. Three problems were considered: (1) the geomorphology and dating of the pluvial lake stillstands, (2) whether the original artifacts were part of a larger early site, and (3) whether there was any relationship between archaeological …
