The Alabama River Phase: A Biological Synthesis And Interpretation, Mary Cassandra Hill Mar 1979

The Alabama River Phase: A Biological Synthesis And Interpretation, Mary Cassandra Hill

Masters Theses

Until recently, very little attention has been paid to the protohistoric time period in the state of Alabama. Perhaps this is because it is not as "artifactually'' interesting as the preceding Woodland and Mississippian periods. The only unusual artifacts found from this time period are mortuary vessels, burial urns, which are not found in preceding occupations.

This protohistoric time period, known as the Alabama River phase, is very important, however, in the reconstruction of the total prehistoric cultural development. It was during this time that one of the most elaborate, affluent social structures, the Southeastern Ceremonial Complex, declined and met …

Racial Group Identification From The Innominate By Discriminant Function Analysis, Katherine E. Douglass Mar 1979

Racial Group Identification From The Innominate By Discriminant Function Analysis, Katherine E. Douglass

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to develop a statistical method for determining the race of unknown individuals from measurements on the innominate. Samples of 45 individuals of each sex from skeletal collections of American Blacks, American Whites, and American Indians were used to calculate discriminant functions and classification functions which separated those groups.

Data for this research consisted of 23 measurements from the right innominate of individuals of known race, and known or estimated sex and age. These data were analyzed by a discriminant function program which calculated both discriminant and classification functions, and percent correct classification by race …

Hsus Opposes Cruel Clubbing Of Harp Seal Pups

Close Up Reports

World opinion, including that of many Canadians, has long been against the annual so-called "seal harvest" on the ice floes off the coast of Newfoundland. Yet the Canadian bureaucrats refuse to budge.

As spring approaches, protests are being raised throughout the world to end this barbaric practice. At the same time the Canadian government is attempting to convince the world that the clubbing is both "humane" and necessary.
