In January 1979, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, was requested by the Fort Worth District United States Army Corps of Engineers to prepare a historical, architectural and archaeological survey of the lands for ¼-mile on either side of the San Antonio River from the Olmos Dam to South Alamo Street, and the San Pedro Creek from San Pedro Park to Guadalupe Street. Pursuant to requirements of the E.D.A. as outlined in a letter from the City Menard, Texas dated April 16, 1979, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) submitted a proposal for an archaeological survey of the route of a new natural gas pipeline. This proposal was accepted by the City of Menard in a letter dated April 23, and the survey was accomplished on May 1 and 2 by Thomas C. Kelly and Fred Valdez, Jr., archaeologists from the UTSA Center for Archaeological Research.

During May 1979, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted literature research and an archaeological field survey of an area to be developed by the Formosa Plastic Company near Point Comfort, Calhoun County, Texas.
The field and literature survey was done under contract between the Center for Archaeological Research (UTSA) and the Pace Company of Houston, Texas. During mid-April 1979, personnel from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted an archaeological and historical survey of areas proposed for modification in the Conquista Project Continental Oil Company leases of the Haase, Moy, and Wiatrek properties in northern Karnes County, Texas. The purpose of surface investigation was to make an assessment of any archaeological or historical resources discovered on the properties and to make recommendations regarding such resources. Miller, Director of Construction Management, General Services Administration (GSA), contacted the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, to request archaeological investigations of GSA property located south of the Old U.S. Arsenal, between South Flores Street and South Main Avenue in downtown San Antonio. The investigations would be conducted to determine if the Spanish Colonial San Pedro Acequia (not to be confused with San Pedro Creek nearby) ran through the property as indicated on old maps; and if so, to locate it and describe its construction and condition. In May 1979, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted preliminary investigations at site 41BX180, a group of historic limestone ruins located on the Walker Ranch in northern Bexar County, Texas. A history of ownership of Walker Ranch is included. Archaeological investigations of three structures and associated artifacts are described. An appendix discusses the faunal material from the site.

During February through April 1979, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, carried out an intensive archaeological survey at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, Llano and Gillespie Counties, Texas. A summary of the 120 newly recorded sites is presented, along with more detailed information on shovel testing, auger testing and two excavated sites. Data from faunal and constant volume analyses at the excavated sites are described and tabulated. Appendices include documentation of a local collection, an artifact inventory from an earlier survey, and an analysis of phytoliths from one of the excavated sites.

In May 1977, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, and the firm of Eugene George, AIA Architect, carried out an intensive investigation and recording of a German farmstead in Victoria County, Texas. A detailed history of the family and the site and a complete architectural recording and analysis are included. Archaeological investigations of standing structures and sites of former structures are described. The results of the investigations are discussed in relation to archaeological investigations at other rural sites. Appendices on phosphate testing and detailed architectural drawings of the Schob house are included.

The monograph being published here is the first in a series of data-oriented reports derived from the archaeological and ethnohistorical project centered on the modern town of Guerrero, Coahuila, Mexico. To our gratification, the project produced a great deal of information. We have decided to meet the problem of adequate publication of the results in two ways. The first is by a volume of essays which aim at synthesizing the various aspects of the data and drawing conclusions from it. Three Spantsh missions, San Francisco Solano, San Juan Bautista and San Bernardo, were established near the Rio Grande at present Guerrero, northeastern Coahuila, during the years 1700-1703. Remnants of at least 88 distinctively named Indian groups at various times came to live at one or more of these missions. In 1975- 1976, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas San Antonio, supported by funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Kathryn O'Connor Foundation, conducted archaeological excavations at two of these missions, San Juan Bautista and San Bernardo.
