Mary's River Kalapuyan: A Descriptive Phonology, Yvonne P. Hajda
Mary's River Kalapuyan: A Descriptive Phonology, Yvonne P. Hajda
Dissertations and Theses
The thesis is an attempt to apply procedures of descriptive linguistic analysis to a body of material phonetically transcribed by Leo J. Frachtenberg in the Mary's River dialect of the central Kalapuyan language. In 1913-14 Frachtenberg collected thirteen volumes of myth texts in Mary's River, twelve from William Hartless and one from Grace Wheeler; in addition, there were notes to the texts, three volumes of grammatical notes, and some ethnographic material. The phonetic transcription was carried out in the pre- phonemic tradition of recording everything the speaker said as accurately as possible. There was no attempt to elicit forms in …
Religion, Kinship, And Labor In Luapala: Prosperity And Economic Stagnation Of Lake And River Fishing Communities, Karla Olga Poewe
Religion, Kinship, And Labor In Luapala: Prosperity And Economic Stagnation Of Lake And River Fishing Communities, Karla Olga Poewe
Anthropology ETDs
In this dissertation I trace the interrelationships among economic activities, kin ties, and religious activities of a people who have some limited access to modern technology and uneven potential for economic development. I therefore analyze the material, ideological, and institutional means which these people employ in order to raise their standard of living. While I take environmental factors into account, I describe Luapulan conditions primarily in terms of internal dynamics based on cumulative, reciprocal, or conflicting action between kin and religious groups, and between alternative (matrilineal versus Protestant) ideologies about the distribution of the products of labor.
I found that …

An Archeological Survey And Assessment Of Cultural Resources Of The Chicago Bridge And Iron Company's Victoria Bluff Facility, Beaufort County, South Carolina, Randolph J. Widmer
Research Manuscript Series
An archeological survey of a 140 acre tract of land on the Colleton River, Beaufort County, South Carolina, scheduled for industrial development by the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company, was conducted by the Institute of Archeology and Anthropology on April 14-17, 1976. Surface investigation and subsurface sampling were used to locate eleven archeological sites on, or very near, the impact zone, two of which (38BUl05 and 38BUl06) had been recorded in a previous survey in 1973. One site (38BU125) is of the historic period but appears to have been almost totally destroyed by bank erosion and its remains are probably …

The Oral Folk History Surrounding The Life Of William Bernard "Big Six" Henderson, Peggy Boaz
The Oral Folk History Surrounding The Life Of William Bernard "Big Six" Henderson, Peggy Boaz
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The oral folk history of William Bernard "Big Six" Henderson is unique in that Henderson himself has been a contributing factor in keeping the tales of his moonshining experiences in the oral traditions of distinct areas of Kentucky, especially Cumberland County. Interviewing Henderson and apprehended and non-apprehended moonshiners allowed speculation into the concept that Henderson was indeed a folk hero. Using Dixon Wector's requirements for heroes, the hero performing unselfish service, acquiring a nickname, obtaining sympathy for handicaps, struggles, and failures, and reaching hero status after death, and providing examples of Henderson's encounters with moonshiners, verifies Henderson's hero status, except …

Pete Seeger, along with Gordon Bok and Sally and Lou Killen, appeared to a full gym at the University of Maine, Orono, Feb[ruary] 29. It was a benefit for poor Clearwater, Pete's Hudson River conservation-promoting sloop, now in the Stonington yards for extensive repairs. Compensating for a bad cold, Pete did many tunes on his whistle and banjo although his voice sounded just find to me when he did sing. Gordon seemed in an exceptionally good mood, adding extra sparkle to an already perfect performance. The Killens sang their songs with the gusto and clarity that has been their trademark …

An Interpretation Of The Florida Ex-Slaves' Memories Of Slavery & The Civil War, Dianna Zacharias
An Interpretation Of The Florida Ex-Slaves' Memories Of Slavery & The Civil War, Dianna Zacharias
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study is an analysis and interpretation of oral folk history preserved in the Florida Narratives, one state collection of ex-slave narratives from the larger Federal Writers' Project collection compiled in the 1930s. Fifty-four tales were extracted from this state collection and used as a basis for this study. These personal reminiscences, called memorates by folklorists, fell into two categories: slavery and the Civil war. The tales about slavery were compared to the theses and conclusions regarding slavery held by sociologists and The tales about the Civil War and emancipation were gathered by historians.
The comparison revealed that there …

Faculty & Staff Publications
The Wallace Reservoir is a Georgia Power Company generating facility currently being constructed 12 miles northwest of Sparta, Georgia. When completed (late in 1978), the Wallace Reservoir will flood 18,000 acres along the Oconee and Apalachee Rivers and their tributaries. An additional 3,000 acres of shoreline will be adversely affected by the presence of the reservoir.
Prior to 1974, three archaeological surveys were conducted in the Wallace Reservoir and its environs. In 1971, the Department of Anthropology, University of Georgia, conducted a 10 week survey of the project area with funding from the Georgia Power Company. During the summer of …

Ye'kwana Basketry: Its Cultural Context, Raymond B. Hames, Ilene Hames
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
The aim of this article is to describe an aspect of Ye'kwana (Makiritare) technology, basketry, in its overall cultural context. We will not only describe basketry as technology per se but the role it plays in Ye'kwana symbolism, ecology, economy and social organization. Also, we will discuss its role in inter-village and inter-ethnic trade and how this role has implications for understanding socio-cultural change in the immediate area of the Padamo River Basin, Territorio Federal Amazonas, Venezuela.

Archaeological Investigations At Sites In The Upper Cibolo Creek Watershed, Central Texas, Thomas C. Kelly, Thomas R. Hester
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
In August, 1976, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted an intensive archaeological survey of the proposed Floodwater Retarding Structure No.1 area, in the Upper Cibolo Creek Watershed, Kendall County, Texas. The work was carried out under the terms of a contract (135-TX-SCS-76) with the U.S.D.A. Soil Conservation Service. An initial survey of this area had been conducted in February, 1975; two historic and 17 prehistoric archaeological sites were documented at that time (Bass and Hester 1975).
The intensive survey had three major objectives: (1) to conduct additional reconnaissance, thus insuring that all possible …

In January, 1976, Hayden Whitsett, archaeologist for the Texas Water Quality Board, carried out an initial archaeological reconnaissance of areas to be affected by the construction of new sewage treatment plant and lines in Natalia, Texas (Medina County WCID #3; Whitsett 1976). As a result of Whitsett's survey, five archaeological sites (41 ME 18-ME 22) were documented, and Whitsett suggested (ibid: 1) that four of these might be eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Sites.
Subsequent to his reconnaissance, Whitsett contacted the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, regarding a …
