The papers published in this volume were presented at a symposium entitled "The Texas Archaic 11” held in San Antonio on November 2, 1975, during the annual meeting of the Texas. Archeological Society. Of those papers delivered during this symposium, only one, "Archaic Diets and Food Economies" (by V. M. Bryant, Jr.), is not presently available for publication.

The present format has been utilized to insure rapid and economical publication of the symposium papers. The papers are primarily status reports, describing the current state of regional knowledge of the Archaic or dealing with specific aspects of the Archaic lifeway. As …

This paper summarizes the prehistoric cultural manifestations found on the Rio Grande Plain of Texas. The primary goal in this paper is to briefly outline the major prehistoric cultural traditions on the Rio Grande Plain. These traditions represent ecological adaptive responses made by the prehistoric inhabitants, and are reflected in the archaeology and ethnology of the area.

This third number in the Center's Special Report series contains two papers dealing with Paleo-Indian archaeology in Texas. Two additional papers dealing with this topic have recently been submitted. One involves a detailed review of the Plainview-Golondrina typological problem (authored by Thomas C. Kelly), and a second (written by Jules A. Jaquier), describing the bifacial implements from the Johnston-Heller site (41VT15).

As a result of intensified archaeological activity in northern Belize, and specifically the work of the joint British Museum-Cambridge University research project (directed by Norman Hammond), a variety of new data have been obtained on the prehistory of this region. Of the many sites that have been mapped, tested, or otherwise investigated in the past few years, one stands out as a major center of ancient Maya lithic technology. This is the site of Colha, located south of Orange Walk Town, along the highway between that town and Belize City. The Carter Family: Traditional Sources For Song, Margaret Bulger

The recorded repertory of the original Carter Family was analyzed for traditional influences. Of the 119 songs examined, it was found that fifty-five, roughly one-fourth of their total repertory, have definite roots in one or more traditional sources. The Carters employed traditional texts within their repertory throughout their professional career. Three genres of song were analyzed: sentimental songs, religious songs, and ballads. Of these, sentimental songs was the largest category with 113 songs. These songs were found to be remarkably similar in thematic content and moral sensibilities to Victorian parlor songs (ca. 1860-1910). The religious songs were shown to be …

The collection consists of Dr. Bryant’s professional and organizational files, biographical data, correspondence, and speeches. Most of the material relates to her publishing efforts, her work as a faculty member at Brooklyn College, and her involvement with professional organizations, especially the New York branch of the American Association of University Women. Most of the material extends form 1950-1975. A list of the more prominent individuals who corresponded with Margaret Bryant has been included as an appendix to the inventory. (For more extensive and comprehensive list of correspondents, see the list included in the collection control file.)

What Are They Saying? A Study Of The Jargon Of Hilltopping, David Lyne

Taped interviews, fox hunting magazines, and a questionnaire were primary sources for collecting approximately 290 of the specialized terms employed by pedestrian fox hunters known as "hilltoppers." Once the terms were collected, they were co,pared with the terms related to formal fox hunting. The comparison revealed that hilltopper jargon and formal fox hunting jargon contain many identical terms, yet the former body of terms is significantly larger and more varied. Machismo Syndrome: A Residential Correlate Of Its Expression In A Mexican Peasant Community, J. M. Brueske

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Michaelson Goldschmidt hypothesis states that in peasant societies wherein male dominance is an ideal, matrilocal residence tends to encourage the expression of the machismo syndrome of behaviors. Recent ethnographic research in a Mexican peasant community supports the hypothesis by the finding that interpersonal violence (one measure of machismo) during a fiesta was perpetrated in every extreme instance by men who were residing matrilocally. The hypothesis thus effectively predicts, in this case, matrilocality as the variable most closely associated with the violent dimension of machismo.

Regional Data In Historic Archeology: Examples From Environmental Impact Surveys, John H. House

The emphasis on regional vs. single site data in prehistoric archeology is related to the assumption that culture is an adaptive behavioral system articulated with the natural and social environments. The testing of hypotheses and models about the nature of past societies in the historic period likewise requires regional data, not all of which may be available in the historical record. Archeological survey data--including those generated by Environmental Impact studies and other specific contract research--may be relevant to measuring cultural variables of historic period societies on a regional basis. The goals of this investigation are to investigate status and rank and to suggest a possible model of the social organization of the builders of Late Woodland burial mounds on the basis of intrasite burial patterning, to determine the pattern of relationships among a sample of East Tennessee burial mounds, and to provide a general characterization of the Hamilton burial complex. Despite previous investigations of this burial complex, earlier works have failed to provide satisfactory treatment of these problems.

The problem considered was the nature of traditional Appalachian chairmaking in a northern metropolis. The subject was an Appalachian migrant who moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Culture change was viewed through the sociological, socioeconomic, and cultural effects of urbanization. Fieldwork focused on interrelated factors of individual personality, style and creativity, and chair production. Information on the chairmaker's background was extracted from Michael Owen Jones's, "Chairmaking in Appalachia: A Study in Style and Creative Imagination In American Folk Art" (Ph.D. dissertation, Indiana University, 1970).

The culture of tobacco has been associated with the history of Kentucky almost from the beginning and remains to this day a vital force in the state’s economy. In this age of scientific and technological advances – of increasing automation – we find that in tobacco farming, hand labor still figures prominently in the production of a major staple crop. This has resulted in the retention of traditional method, technology and terminology, long since lost in the culture of other crops which lent themselves more easily to mechanization.

Paleodemographic analysis of 706 skeletons recovered from the Larson site (39WW2), Walworth County, South Dakota, is presented. The site was a protohistoric Arikara village and cemetery dating to approximately A. O. 1750-1781. Major objectives of this study were to reconstruct vital statistics of the Larson population and to determine population size of the village which contributed to the cemetery.

Analysis was accomplished using a life table methodology assuming a stationary population model. Vital statistics examined include data on mortality, survivorship, age-specific probability of death, life expectancy, and crude mortality rates. Birkby (1966) cautions against the use of discriminant functions based on American Whites and Negroes to determine the sex of American Indian skeletal material. Two problems become apparent in the application of these methods to American Indian crania; (1) the existence of population differences in craniometric means and ranges of variation between American Indians and American Whites and Negroes; (2) the influence of artificial cranial deformation characteristic of many series of American Indian skeletal material. This paper suggests that sex differences in the behavior of children exist but are not necessarily intensified under certain cultural conditions. Under conditions of culture change to a sedentary economy, certain elements of male and female differentiated behavior are exploited in the process of increasing sex differentiation.
