Noun-Verb Relationships In Arikara Syntax, Francesca C. Merlan May 1975

Noun-Verb Relationships In Arikara Syntax, Francesca C. Merlan

Anthropology ETDs

A partial syntactic description of Arikara is presented, with primary emphasis on the relationships of nouns to verbs in the language. Major types of surface intransitive and transitive constructions are described. A transformational description of person agreement in the verb is presented. Major types of possessive constructions are examined. Finally, the process of noun incorporation, characteristic of the Caddoan language family generally, is examined, and evidence is presented for the direct role played by nominal features in Arikara syntax.

The discussion of problems in syntax is preceded by a brief outline of Arikara phonology, which, although neither exhaustive nor definitive, …

I dedicated my book, Lawrence Doyle, first to "Big Jim Pendergast (whom I called, quite rightly, "My first friend on Prince Edward Island") and then to Joe Walsh, "my first friend in King's County." They both died within the month of January. Joe, at eighty-one, had gone down under his house to thaw out some pipes with a propane torch when some straw insulation caught on fire; the whole house went up and that was the end for Joe. Jim died very quietly at ninety-five after years of confinement. I will miss them both; in fact, I already do. — …

A Therapeutic Approach To Education: An Ethnographic Analysis Of Friendsville Academy, A Quaker Middle And Secondary School, L. Janice Campbell

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the therapeutic approach to education which was instituted at Friendsville Academy in Friendsville, Tennessee, between the years 1970 and 1973. !Kung Women: Contrasts In Sexual Egalitarianism In Foraging And Sedentary Contexts, Patricia Draper Jan 1975

!Kung Women: Contrasts In Sexual Egalitarianism In Foraging And Sedentary Contexts, Patricia Draper

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Most members of the Harvard !Kung Bushman Study Project who have thought about the subject of !Kung women's status agree that !Kung society may be the least sexist of any we have experienced. This impression contradicts some popularly held stereotypes about relations between the sexes in hunting and gathering societies. Because sex is one of the few bases for the differentiation of social and economic roles in societies of this type, it has probably been attributed more weight than it deserves. The men are commonly depicted in rather romantic terms, striving with their brothers to bring home the precious meat …
