Peasant Society: Economic Changes And Revolutionary Transformation [Yugoslavia], Joel Halpern, John Brode
Joel M. Halpern
This is the fourth in the series of articles on peasants in the Biennial Review (see also 150, 137, 10). It places particular stress on publications that tend to generalize and synthesize. A main emphasis is to see peasant studies from the viewpoint of other disciplines, as well as from the perspective of the societal context in which American anthropology itself exists. Specific geographical areas are dealt with in concluding summaries.

Cattle Ranching As A Cultural Ecology Problem In San Miguel County, New Mexico, Thomas J. Maloney
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Studies of cultural ecology, the adaptations of the people of a culture to a given physical and social environment, have usually dealt with a single ethnic group in a single environment. This study is concerned with an unusual situation, two fairly distinct ethnic groups in a region with large areas of distinctly different physical environments.

Young Charlotte (Or Fair Charlotte), Ernest Lord

Ritual Kinship In An Urban Setting: Martineztown, New Mexico, Maria Girard Vincent
Ritual Kinship In An Urban Setting: Martineztown, New Mexico, Maria Girard Vincent
Anthropology ETDs
The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the nature of the godparenthood institution among Spanish-Americans living in Martineztown, an urban area of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Two considerations prompted the selection of this research problem: (1) There is a dearth of historical and contemporary data on ritual kinship in New Mexico, and (2) relatively little is known about the form and function of the godparenthood institution in an urban area. The major objectives of this study are to discover whether or not ritual relationships are of functional utility among the Spanish-Americans residing in this community and to determine …

The Hallucinogens Of Meso-American: An Ethnohistorical Survey, Rosemary B. Mudd
The Hallucinogens Of Meso-American: An Ethnohistorical Survey, Rosemary B. Mudd
Anthropology ETDs
This study describes and analyzes the patterns of usage associated with the hallucinogenic plants of Meso-America prior to the conquest and during the colonial period. Although distinctive features of the utilization of specific hallucinogens are noted, primary emphasis is placed on the use of the plants in general. Both continuities and changes from the pre-conquest and colonial periods to the present are indicated by the study. Separate descriptions of each hallucinogen or group of hallucinogens based principally on data in colonial sources are presented as essential to the analysis. The specific plants discussed include the hallucinogenic mushrooms, peyote, the Daturas, …

The Blackwater Side, Bill Cramp
Maine Song and Story Sampler
"The Blackwater Side" is one of many songs that came to Maine from the British Tradition. It is, as Bill Cramp called it, a "long love song." This ballad is one in a series of songs that consist of true lovers' discussions, but none are any more good humored than "The Blackwater Side."

Use Of The Legislative Process In Protecting Animals, Hugh Mcnamee
Use Of The Legislative Process In Protecting Animals, Hugh Mcnamee
Laws and Legislation Collection
The statements that I shall make in this address are based upon experience gained by me as a lawyer, and as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives. That experience was applied to the successful pioneer attempt to enact the Ohio Rodeo Law of which I was the author and the pilot. Ohio is the first state in which a law has been passed to prohibit certain cruelty practices prevalent in rodeos and thus virtually eliminate them as a medium of public entertainment.
The origin of legislation is in some comprehension of a condition that needs correction by law. …

The Zadruga: An Anglo-American View Of Balkan Social Structures, Joel Halpern
Joel M. Halpern
This paper concentrates on the South Slav extended family as viewed by observers writing in English, principally British and American. Specifically included are the writings of nineteenth century travelers and, in the twentieth century, the observations of ethnographers, sociologists and anthropologists. These are compared to analyses made by Slavic scholars. Most of the material is from Yugoslavia, and data from Bulgaria is also included.
