Analysis Of Unmodified Stone Materials From The Cambria Site, Charles R. Watrall
Analysis Of Unmodified Stone Materials From The Cambria Site, Charles R. Watrall
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Analysis of the stone materials from the Cambria Site reinforces cultural implications about the site made on formal artifact analysis alone. Secondly, the paper illustrates a simple means of analysis to gain vital information on archaeological site culture history.
Naming Practices In South America, John Bregenzer
Naming Practices In South America, John Bregenzer
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
On the basis of previous investigation of modes of address and social structure, this study attempts to show that certain naming practices in South America are related to indicators of a postulated individualism-communalism continuum of the societies. The results suggest a relationship between some naming practices and a continuum based on mean size of the local community.
An Archaeological Survey Of Goshen Valley, Utah County, Central Utah, Leland Gilsen
An Archaeological Survey Of Goshen Valley, Utah County, Central Utah, Leland Gilsen
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a field report on the archaeological sites surveyed by the author in Goshen Valley, Utah County, Utah. The survey has the threefold objectives of: (1) surveying and recording of sites in Goshen Valley; (2) providing information on the material culture of the ancient inhabitants of the valley; and (3) discovering whether there was a dividing line during the Fremont occupation between the Provo and Sevier regions as outlined by Jones (1961), Green (1964), and Ambler (1966).
To this end, seventy-four sites are described along with the related material culture with an analysis of the material culture in …

A Folk History Of The Manti Temple: A Study Of The Folklore And Traditions Connected With The Settlement Of Manti, Utah, And The Building Of The Temple, Barbara Lee Hargis
Theses and Dissertations
For some time I have been collecting folk material of the pioneers of Sanpete County, Utah, and their subsequent building of the Manti Temple. A few of the county's senior citizens witnessed part of the construction in the late 1870's and 1880's and the dedication in 1888 of the Temple. Many more are descendants of men and women who were directly involved in the building of the Temple and in the early work done there after its construction.
The stories that these people tell are significant. A collection of them represents a rich folk history of a religious, pioneering people …

An Archaeological Survey Of West Canyon And Vicinity, Utah County Utah, Edward A. Wheeler Ii
Theses and Dissertations
This section is a statement on the reason behind my conducting archeological excavations in West Canyon. In light of the large collections which had come out of the area, it was deemed important to excavate before any further destruction of sites in the canyon took place in order to establish, if possible, the cultural affiliations of the prehistoric inhabitants of that area. It was felt before excavation began that there was enough evidence already on hand to suggest Fremont culture affiliation, but this was not sufficient to demonstrate the same with confident conclusiveness.
A second goal was to obtain a …

A Pilot Study Of Wichita Indian Archeology And Ethnohistory, Robert E. Bell, Edward B. Jelks, W., W. Newcombe
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
In 1965 several anthropologists drew up plans for a one-year pilot study of the archeology and ethnohistory of the Wichita Indian tribes. After financial support had been generously provided by the National Science Foundation, the proposed research was carried out. This is a report on the results of that study.
The pilot study was designed to: a) obtain a body of field data from the components of the Spanish Fort sites, the largest and best=documented of the historic Wichita sites in the Red River area; b) make test excavations at several other sites in order that a problem=oriented program of …

The Banks Of Newfoundland, Mabel Worcester
Maine Song and Story Sampler
"The Banks of Newfoundland" is the title of at least six different songs. These are not variations on a single tune, but entirely different songs with different airs and lyrics. All share a common theme - the dangers of fishing or sailing off the coast of Newfoundland - but none are very similar.

This newsletter will be as brief as it has been (up to now) non-existent. However, you are entitled to know what has happened to Northeast Folklore, which usually appears late in May or early in June. Well, very simply, it will appear sometime late in July or early in August. I will spare you any long and involved mea culpa at this point, although no one is to blame but me. However, all seems to be going ahead adequately now, and unless something goes very wrong you should have Northeast Folklore VIII soon. At that time we will also bill …
Economies In Bondage: An Essay On The Mining Industry In Africa, Alvin W. Wolfe
Economies In Bondage: An Essay On The Mining Industry In Africa, Alvin W. Wolfe
Anthropology Faculty Publications
Explains how mining companies are organized "in a network of overlapping groups so that even though a company may compete directly with another at one level, their higher-level supranational organization emphasizes their common interests" (p. 19). African states were constrained to use Western advisors whose counsel was "likely to be limited to the purely technical (in either law, or economics, or engineering -- and conceived in the context of status quo," whereas the crucial problems are surely political, so that "the context of African decision-making should be oriented toward a future world system quite different from today's" (p. 19).
