Wichita State University is known for its advances in STEM research for many decades, but there were few inventions patented by WSU. In recent years, commercialization of the results of applied research, especially bioengineering, became a university focus; the number of WSU owned patents increased significantly. WSU initiated several initiatives to support university inventors. These included the development of the Innovation Campus and WSU Venture. The Wichita State University Libraries decided to join these efforts by not only providing information to inventors as a Patent and Trademark Resource Center but to archive and increase awareness of their patents. The letter is brief, dated June 13, 1930, and clearly a reply to an inquiry. It is a total of four numbered paragraphs. What makes it interesting is the letter’s recipient and its explanation about the number of African American students at the University of Dayton in 1930.

With the abrupt announcement in late January 2020 that the National Archives at Seattle–placed on 10 acres in the Sand Point neighborhood since 1963–would be "eventually" closed and the records moved to facilities in Riverside, California and Kansas City, Missouri, the surprised dismay from state archivists, researchers, and Native American tribal leaders and Alaska Natives who see their ancestors and heritage directly depicted in the records was quick and loud. The facility holds one million cubic feet of federal records which are accessed by over 700 people visiting its research rooms, and which grow by about 1300 cubic feet annually. …

The digital conversion and creation of accessible records from the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament (SBS) Oral History Collection includes recorded and transcribed interviews with the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament who, in 1915, founded Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) and continue to serve today. This article reflects on the beginnings of XULA and its unique place in Southern black history as the only Roman Catholic historically black college or university (HBCU) in the United States. Archival materials can often be found in cultural heritage organizations that do not have trained special collections catalogers on staff. In this workshop, participants will learn how to catalog manuscripts, photographs, and audiovisual materials so they can be discovered in online catalogs and databases. Both item and collection-level cataloging will be discussed and participants will learn when and how to apply metadata standards like RDA and DACS. Time for hands-on practice will be included.

This presentation shares privacy challenges that librarians in the Digital Collections Center at FIU have encountered when working with the creators of content in the institutional repository and digital collections. The presenters share a brief history of privacy laws and the ethical concerns inherent in the juxtaposition between access and privacy. This presentation suggests possible solutions for other digital librarians concerned about privacy and take down requests.

Seedbanks, or so-called archival arks of the apocalypse, are addressing accelerating anthropocentric alterations to the environment by collecting, storing, and preserving seeds. These are specialized archival repositories that approach, frame, and use seeds as documents for agricultural and scientific research, classification and preservation work, and various other archival and administrative purposes. Seedbanks indeed are archives of unconventional records.

The Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and the Society for American Archivists (SAA) joint standard, Standardized Statistical Measures and Metrics for Public Services in Archival Repositories and Special Collections Libraries, provides a shared vocabulary and set of statistical measures that help archival and special collections repositories articulate their value as they share concrete evidence demonstrating the impact of their services. My name is Daardi Sizemore Mixon and I’m the University Archivist at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

The university archive holds memorabilia of campus history that is often overlooked by undergraduate students. Some university archivists have emphasized the importance of increased, intentional outreach to undergraduate students with the goals of educating students about the value of archives, providing instruction for the use of primary source materials, and presenting archival services to potential post-graduate patrons. These efforts, though student focused, do not center the perspectives or contributions of the target audience. This report presents the findings of an exploratory examination of the pedagogical practices of social sciences and humanities instructors who teach undergraduates with primary sources at the University of Kentucky (UK). Conducted in December 2019 and January 2020 by a research team from the University of Kentucky Libraries Special Collections Research Center, the study reveals areas of success within existing programs and services, the benefits and drawbacks of teaching with digitized primary sources, as well as inherent pedagogical challenges to overcome. A list of recommendations based on the findings seeks to address these challenges and concludes the report. As part …

Beginning in March of 2020, Mary Miller and Kathleen Carter coordinated the work of over 100 University of Georgia Libraries students, faculty, and staff on remote metadata projects for the Brown Media Archives. The great majority of these UGA employees were not catalogers, were not familiar with metadata concepts, and had never visited the Brown Media Archives. Yet, in a four-month period, they successfully completed a quantity of work that would have taken Brown Media two and a half years to accomplish at regular staffing levels. The Civil War Letters Of David W. Voyles, M. D., Mary K Marlatt

Dr. David W. Voyles (1834–1899) of Washington County, Indiana, served as Assistant Surgeon and Surgeon with the 66th Indiana Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The letters of Dr. Voyles to his wife Susan, dating from November 1862 to January 1864, provide a glimpse into the mind of an educated, thoughtful man. Voyles wrote eloquently about the war, his political views (Republican and antislavery), and, like so many other soldiers, the lack of letters from home. Archivist Mary K. This article contextualizes these goals with a larger discussion about anti-discriminatory public policies and laws, as well as political and social movements both past and present. The National Digital Stewardship Alliance surveyed practitioners in 2012 and again in 2017 to gauge, among other things, how satisfied they were with their organizations’ digital preservation function. This study seeks to understand what causes the high and rising levels of dissatisfaction that practitioners reported. We interviewed 21 digital stewards and asked them to describe the organizational context in which they work; to reflect on what aspects of their organizations’ approach to digital preservation are working well and which are not; and to evaluate necessary areas of improvement.
