The Relationship Between The Physical Activity Environment, Nature Relatedness, Anxiety, And The Psychological Well-Being Benefits Of Regular Exercisers
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
Research from a variety of scientific fields suggests that physical activity in nature and feelings of connection to nature enhance psychological health and well-being. This study investigated the psychological health and well-being impact of the physical activity environment for those already undertaking the recommended weekly amount of physical activity. This topic is important for the design of health and well-being environments and interventions involving physical activity. Participants (N = 262) aged 18–71 years (M = 34.5, SD = 13.1) who met the UK physical activity guidelines completed the Nature Relatedness Scale, the trait section of the State Trait Inventory for …
Ecopoetry As Mind Into Matter: Some Educational Possibilities
Ecopoetry As Mind Into Matter: Some Educational Possibilities
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
In part, this work draws on the revisioning of curriculum in the context of the climate crisis that occupies Chapter 8 of the author’s book on Sense of Place, Identity, and the Revisioning of Curriculum (2023: Springer Nature). The focus here is the “genre” of ecopoetry, described by Walton (2018) as “contributing to the task of repairing divisions between humanity and the ecosystems that constitute and support us” (p. 393). As a response to the Anthropocene, ecopoetry is potentially polemical and activist. However, as it is argued, it can also operate in more covert means by modelling ways in which …

The 2021 Kansas Rural Grocery Survey: Revaluating Extension’S Role In Rural Grocery Issues, Jacob A. Miller-Klugesherz, Jessica Ramirez, Rial Carver, Erica Blair, Leah J. Tsoodle, Lauren Scheufler
The Journal of Extension
Kansas State University’s Rural Grocery Initiative, housed under research and extension, surveyed rural Kansas grocery stores in 2021 (N = 48). This is the second RGI survey, following up on the ownership and customer surveys in 2008. This survey broadly assesses owner characteristics, store features, and challenges. Using descriptive and thematic analyses, we identified two topline conclusions for grocers and their respective Extension services. First, grocers need to identify transition plans earlier and more often. Second, grocers can overcome competition and distribution challenges by diversifying their sourcing, supply, and offerings.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study investigates the awareness and utilization of Open-Source Software (OSS) for library automation within the context of University Libraries in Pakistan. Through a comprehensive survey of University Librarians, the research explores the extent of OSS adoption, with a focus on specific systems such as Koha and SLiMS. The findings show a high level of awareness and active use of OSS, particularly Koha, in library automation processes. Public sector universities demonstrate a greater inclination towards OSS adoption compared to private and semi-government institutions. The study outlines the predominant purposes for utilizing OSS, emphasizing cataloging and circulation services. Furthermore, it highlights …

Imposter Participants In Online Qualitative Interviews: A Protocol For Trauma-Informed And Equitable Decision-Making, L. B. Klein, Caro Cruys
Imposter Participants In Online Qualitative Interviews: A Protocol For Trauma-Informed And Equitable Decision-Making, L. B. Klein, Caro Cruys
The Qualitative Report
Imposter participants are an emerging concern in qualitative research due to the recent increase in online recruitment and virtual interviews. Unfortunately, there is limited guidance on how to address imposter participants in an equitable, trauma-informed way. To bridge this gap, we share imposter participant red flags, challenges, and a protocol that provides questions to ask and possible activities to engage in throughout the research process from conceptualization through findings dissemination. We ground this guidance in examples from our recent study with LGBTQ+ (e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence.

Why Nigeria Needs A Femicide Law, Jessica Ojiugo Chinonye
Why Nigeria Needs A Femicide Law, Jessica Ojiugo Chinonye
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
The Federal Republic of Nigeria does not have a law against femicide or comprehensive global femicide data. The numbers currently reported at the national level are questionable, especially with the prevalence of economic-motivated harvesting of female reproductive organs in the country. The lack of a legalized femicide law has exacerbated the underreporting of such activities in Nigeria and has made the severity of the crime less visible. This article aims to name the problem by defining and advocating for a femicide law encompassing the social realities of many Nigerian females.

Factors Shaping Public Support For More Carbon Capture And Storage Projects In The United States, Mahelet G. Fikru, Nhien Nguyen
Factors Shaping Public Support For More Carbon Capture And Storage Projects In The United States, Mahelet G. Fikru, Nhien Nguyen
Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study contributes to the literature examining public acceptance of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects in the US. The examination of factors that shape public support for CCS projects provides policymakers with insights to address public concerns, balance CCS development with public sentiments, and make informed decisions about optimal locations and timing. Based on a nationally representative survey on 1850 respondents, the study finds that in the US, there is very low familiarity (6.4%) regarding CCS technology and some limited opposition (11.5%) to increased CCS development. Regression results suggest that support for increased CCS projects in the US is …

Along For The Journey: Graduate Student Perceptions Of Research, Alissa Droog, Kari D. Weaver, Frances Brady
Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications
Graduate students’ identities and personal lives are heavily tied to their experiences of research, and many struggle to find, understand, and use information for research purposes. Using a drawing exercise rooted in visual research methods combined with semi-structured interviews, a research team in the United States and Canada explored graduate student perceptions of research with nineteen participants. Thematic analysis identified six themes: research is abstract; research is an odyssey; social support makes or breaks the student experience; research is an emotional continuum; interplay between identity/values; information is problematic. The study has implications for how librarians support graduate student research.
Computerized Cognitive Training In The Treatment Of Depression: Individual Differences And Perceptions Of Cct, Sophie Schiff
Computerized Cognitive Training In The Treatment Of Depression: Individual Differences And Perceptions Of Cct, Sophie Schiff
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Major Depressive Disorder is a serious mental health disorder that affects 8% of adults in the United States. Adults aged 18-29 are at an elevated risk with a prevalence of 12%. Depression is most often characterized by mood symptoms, however, individuals with depression often also present with cognitive weaknesses on objective neuropsychological measures across several domains. These deficits are not only associated with mood symptoms, but significantly interfere with treatment and have been found to persist even with successful treatment of affective symptoms. Research into interventions directly targeting cognition has increased in recent years. While traditional first-line treatments for depression, …

Perceptual Expectation, Rebecca Keller
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
You are currently seeing many things, and, hopefully, you are currently about to see many other things. Many of the things that you are about to see will not be surprising, because you expect to see them. Sometimes, though, when you expect to see one thing and are faced with another, that thing will look like the thing you expected it to be, and not like the thing it actually is. This dissertation is an attempt to get a handle on what is happening in the visual system in these instances. In particular, I am trying to figure out what …

Understanding Travel Behavior And Accessibility For Older Adults: A Comprehensive Framework, Andy Hong, Cathy Liu, Ja Young Kim, Zihao Wen
TREC Final Reports
This study used a mixed-method design to examine travel behavior and accessibility of older adults. The research team conducted a statewide survey and focus groups to gather travel behavior data of older adults (50+) residing in Utah. The study also employed a two-step floating catchment area method, a novel spatial technique, and integrated the survey data to accurately measure travel accessibility of older adults. Using the survey data of 724 older adults as well as the focus group interviews of 18 older individuals, we found a significant dissatisfaction and vulnerability experienced by older adults with limited mobility. The distribution patterns …

Food Insecurity Cost Estimates For El Paso: 2023, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr., Gregory S. Schober, Steven L. Fullerton, Eva Moya
Border Region Modeling Project
Food insecurity is a fairly pervasive problem throughout the United States that is especially burdensome for low-income regions. While the latter is generally recognized, there have been very few efforts to quantify the dollar costs of food insecurity, especially at the regional level. This study attempts to do so for El Paso County, Texas. This is achieved by first adjusting for inflation cost estimates in a prior national level study. Regional differences with respect to the nation are then utilized to calculate comparable costs for El Paso. Results indicate that the economic damage wrought by food insecurity in El Paso …

Strategies And Tools For Teaching Music Learners About Citations, Z. Sylvia Yang, Jessica M. Abbazio
Strategies And Tools For Teaching Music Learners About Citations, Z. Sylvia Yang, Jessica M. Abbazio
Library Faculty publications
Formatting citations is a task faced by students across all disciplines and at all stages of their academic careers, and the wide variety of content types and formats used in music-related research means that this work can be especially complex for students in music classes. How can library staff teach music students about footnotes and bibliography entries without spending entire sessions pointing out the positions of commas and parentheses, thereby leaving limited time to discuss the relationship of citations to knowledge production? The authors introduce a range of methods for providing instruction on formatting citations, including the implementation of a …

Recasting The Mould – Librarianship Of The Future: Leveraging Automation, Apis, And Ai, Samantha Seah
Research Collection Library
With leaps in artificial intelligence made in recent years redefining the information landscape and introducing new means of information production, librarianship also must evolve to include new literacies. One way librarians can equip and empower ourselves is by understanding the building blocks of how machines and automation work. Perhaps more important than learning specific programming languages, learning computational thinking provides us with more ways to spot and evaluate problems and devise solutions without extensive coding knowledge. My presentation will take the improvement of membership processing as an example using Power Automate, a low-code Microsoft tool mimicking block programming. The tool …
Attitudes When Taking Assessments Using Proctoring Software And Academic Honesty Between Students With Disabilities And General Population Students, Erin Carter
Education Doctorate Dissertations
This quantitative study explores student attitudes and academic dishonesty in online assessments using proctoring software, focusing on differences between students with disabilities and general population students, and ensuring academic integrity in online assessments. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), requires any college or university that receives federal funds to provide accommodations for students who disclose they have a disability, with the stipulation the accommodations or services do not fundamentally alter the nature of the course or program of study. The research is rooted in Kohlberg’s moral reasoning and development stages and …

(Wp 2024-04) Making Philosophy Relevant To Economists, John B. Davis
(Wp 2024-04) Making Philosophy Relevant To Economists, John B. Davis
Economics Working Papers
This chapter discusses how philosophy could influence economists in the future. It emphasizes factors affecting economists’ willingness to incorporate philosophical ideas in economics, and distinguishes a weak case and a strong case for them doing so. Both are tied to behavioral welfare economics’ ‘reconciliation problem’ regarding the relationship between positive and normative economics. The weak case concerns the nature of individual identity in connection with how present bias and weakness of will potentially pit today’s and tomorrow’s selves against one another. The strong case concerns the normative scope of economic policy and expanding policy recommendation beyond its current welfare-only basis. …
