Making A Case For Local Relevance: Strategic Exhibition Planning For The Gordon W. Prange Collection, Yukako Tatsumi
Making A Case For Local Relevance: Strategic Exhibition Planning For The Gordon W. Prange Collection, Yukako Tatsumi
Journal of East Asian Libraries
In the changing academic libraries environment, area studies and special collections, marked by a high level of expertise in a specialized area, are faced with the challenge of articulating their value and becoming connected with a broad range of local users. This article shows that exhibitions can be a powerful instrument for making a convincing case for the relevance of these specialized collections to local users. It discusses a model case of strategic exhibition development for the Gordon W. Prange Collection, which archives Japanese-language print publications issued during the first four years of the U.S. Occupation of Japan, 1945-1949. Making …

Book Piracy And The Challenge Of Saving Nigeria's Publishing Industry, Momoh Emmanuel Omeiza, Folorunso Abubakar Lanre
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Book piracy has been an issue trending in the Nigerian publishing space recently. This is because of the ripple effects of the action on both publishers and authors alike. This action has over the years been a bottle neck for publishers and authors in achieving their aim of reaching out to the public and making sales from their respective publications.
In the light of this, this study seeks to explain certain reasons why this action has not been effectively nipped in the bud as well as the pandemic effects of this situation.
Conclusively, the study would suggest some of the …

Responsible Collaborations: Scholarship And Cultural Heritage Assets, Irene Herold
All Faculty Articles
I recently served as a national consultant on collaborations between libraries and museums. There are not that many articles published about collaborations and cultural heritage collections, although I suspect many unreported activities are being done in the field. From the 2009 program my College Libraries Section (CLS) committee developed when I was CLS chair on town/gown relationships (Our Town, Common Ground) with public and academic librarian panelists to a 2016 article, cultural heritage institutions and collaboration has been a focus of mine. My life and work experiences gave me a broad exposure to a wide variety of cultures, cultural norms, …

Data Visualization Tools For Archives And Special Collections, Kayla Harris, Andrew Harris

As archivists, we often view ourselves as stewards of the collections, preserving materials for other researchers to use. We arrange, describe, and promote the items, but it’s not always within our job descriptions to interpret the materials we work with or to create new knowledge. Yet data visualization, or any effort that helps users see data in a visual way, can be an easy and accessible way to promote collections. This article highlights data visualization tools archivists have begun to use to enhance their digital holdings. Each tool requires a different level of technical expertise, but many are user-friendly and …

In 2017, a team of librarians and archivists at Western University developed local Information Literacy Learning Outcomes (ILLOs). Promoting Inclusivity In The Archive: A Literature Review Reassessing Tradition Through Theory And Practice, Autumn Wetli
Promoting Inclusivity In The Archive: A Literature Review Reassessing Tradition Through Theory And Practice, Autumn Wetli
School of Information Student Research Journal
The call for social justice and rise of postmodernism in the second half of the 20th century forced the critical re-evaluation of the traditional archive and its presumed neutral role in the collection and creation of history. Reappraisal of traditional archive theory and practice was forced by heightened critical conscious among the field and its constituents. This literature review examines contemporary methodologies and methods influenced by the postmodern movement and call for social justice in the archive. Affect theory, radical empathy, and queer/ed methodology provide new frameworks for the thinking about the archive space and work towards the creation of …

Reprographic Services: Availability And Effective Accessibility Of University Library Materials By Students In Enugu State University Of Science And Technology, Delight Udochukwu
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Adequate resources in Libraries are not an indication of a good or well-organized Library, as availability of resources does not guarantee full accessibility. Many a time, users of University Libraries find it difficult to effectively access and reproduce the available resources in the library, owing to either complete absence or shortage of reprographic facilities, which as a matter of fact, is of great concern. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of reprographic services in enhancing the availability and accessibility of library resources to students in University Libraries, a case study of Enugu State University of Science …
