Frameworks For Collaboration: Articulating Information Literacy, And Rhetoric And Writing Goals In The Archives, Amy J. Lueck, Nadia Nasr
Staff publications, research, and presentations
Rhetoric and composition scholars have recently called our attention to the value of archival research in the undergraduate classroom, leading to rich collaborations with archivists and librarians at many institutions. As we engaged our own pedagogical collaboration as a university archivist and English faculty member, we realized that, though we might use slightly different language to articulate them or cite different sources in support of them, many of our learning goals overlapped. As we explored these goals together, we realized that they evidenced a correspondence in our disciplines that we had not explored—one that is reflected in our fields’ recent …

The Roots Of Community: A Local Librarian's Resource For Discovering, Documenting And Sharing The History Of Library Services To African Americans In Their Communities, Matthew R. Griffis
Publications and Other Resources
Intended for current library professionals, this toolkit provides a theoretical basis for completing public history projects about libraries and explores specific project types, selected best practices and related resources. It divides into three major sections: Part 1, “Planning,” Part 2 “Gathering” and Part 3, “Sharing.” Respectively, these sections cover the preparation, collection and communication tasks of research projects and, where appropriate, offer readers several types of potentially useful resources. Many of these resources—forms, letters, standards, examples of evidence—were used for the author’s Roots of Community project and appear as examples of resources deemed suitable for that project. In other instances, …

Data Visualization Tools For Archives And Special Collections, Kayla Harris, Andrew Harris
Marian Library Faculty Publications
As archivists, we often view ourselves as stewards of the collections, preserving materials for other researchers to use. We arrange, describe, and promote the items, but it’s not always within our job descriptions to interpret the materials we work with or to create new knowledge. Yet data visualization, or any effort that helps users see data in a visual way, can be an easy and accessible way to promote collections. This article highlights data visualization tools archivists have begun to use to enhance their digital holdings. Each tool requires a different level of technical expertise, but many are user-friendly and …

Review: 'Human Operators: A Critical Oral History On Technology In Libraries And Archives', Kayla Harris
Marian Library Faculty Publications
What is technology? Although the definition changes depending on context, editor Melissa Morrone starts off her collection of oral history interviews, Human Operators: A Critical Oral History on Technology in Libraries and Archives, by posing that question. In a unique style, Morrone compiles, edits, and connects interviews from 42 different librarians and archivists into one book that reads like a conversational narrative. Many interesting topics are covered throughout, but the book mainly provides responses from librarians and archivists about how we, as humans, use and ultimately feel about technology in different environments.

Review: 'Learner-Centered Pedagogy: Principles And Practice', Kayla Harris
Marian Library Faculty Publications
Learner-Centered Pedagogy: Principles and Practice combines theory and application to explain why “who we are as people matters” in regards to learning. Although the text is written for instructional librarians teaching information literacy, the scenarios are easily adapted to a special collections context, making this a key text for any archivist, especially those with responsibilities for outreach or instruction.

Marine History For The Environment's Future: The Archives Of The Virginia Institute Of Marine Science, Kathleen Mccallister, Carol Coughlin
Presentations
The collective body of marine information and historical knowledge is critical both for developing future studies and for evaluating changes in and threats to marine environments. Originally established in 1940, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science initially began gathering works related to the coastal and estuarine environments.
The current-day William J. Hargis, Jr. Library serves the Institute and the broader scientific community by providing access to such knowledge. Its print and expanding digital collections, and particularly its archives, furnish its patrons and scholars throughout the world with decades of information and research in the marine sciences.
The archival material not …
