The Digital Librarian: The Liaison Between Digital Collections And Digital Preservation, Marina Georgieva

Library Faculty Presentations

Poster session following the lightning talk at 2018 NDSA Forum Opening
Plenary about the role of the digital librarian and how it relates to digital
preservation.

It’s common misconception digital librarians are involved only in
digitizing historic materials. In fact managing digital projects is only
their visible role. Once it’s over, librarians embrace their new role of
information architects directly engaged in the digital preservation process
of archiving master files. The digital librarian is that unit in the prep
process for digital preservation that ensures meticulously organized archival
directories, easy navigation and smooth file retrieval. Part of session:
Minute Madness …

Leon Lederman, Honoring Our Founder, Christian D. Nøkkentved Oct 2018

Leon Lederman, Honoring Our Founder, Christian D. Nøkkentved

Archives Exhibits

To honor Dr. Leon Lederman (15 July 1922-3 October 2018), a Nobel Laureate and former Director of Fermi Lab, and most importantly one of the founders of IMSA. After retiring as director of Fermi Lab, Dr. Lederman served as our resident scientist. In that capacity, he organized the Great Minds Program through which he invited scientists and other scholars to campus. Typically, the visitor would interact with students in the afternoon and then hold a more formal lecture in the evening, often open to the Aurora community.

Notice especially some of his wonderful doodles and cartoons included in this exhibit.

Lessons From The Treblinka Archive: Transnational Collections And Their Implications For Historical Research, Chad S.A. Gibbs Oct 2018

Lessons From The Treblinka Archive: Transnational Collections And Their Implications For Historical Research, Chad S.A. Gibbs

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

In work for his 1979 book The Death Camp Treblinka, Alexander Donat began the process of locating survivors of the camp and recording their histories. In a telling testament to the lethality of this place, he could identify only sixty-eight survivors. Analysis of Donat’s early findings—emerging six years prior to the publication of any major academic monograph on the subject—offers a window into the difficulties of conducting research on this Nazi extermination camp and its widely-scattered witnesses.

Treblinka’s disembarkation ramp was effectively the eye of a transnational needle through which so many passed and so few emerged. Victims of …

Review Of Participatory Heritage, Allyson E. Smally

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

This review of Participatory Heritage, edited by Henriette Roued-Cunliffe and Andrea Copeland, focuses on the book's relevance to the archives field. It highlights some of the chapters that will be most relevant to archivists, provides overviews and highlights of each of the book's three sections, discusses some of the main themes that come up throughout the book, and mentions a few strengths and drawbacks to the book’s approach. It addresses some ways the book relates to important topics in the archives field today and what areas of the field it has particular relevance for. The review concludes that Participatory …

Excuses For Silence: A Review Of The Silence Of The Archive, Anna Robinson-Sweet Oct 2018

Excuses For Silence: A Review Of The Silence Of The Archive, Anna Robinson-Sweet

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

The Silence of the Archive by David Thomas, Simon Fowler, and Valerie Johnson promises to investigate the causes of archival silence, and to find solutions for dealing with these silences. The topic is timely and important at a time when distrust of power is high, and there exists a concomitant expectation of finding truth in the archives. The book is reticent in its investigation, however, shying away from calling out the way power is exercised to create silences. The exception is Valerie Johnson’s argument on the necessity of silence, which challenges the tendency toward stasis in the archive.

Appraisal Of Faculty Personal Papers In American Public University Archives: The Public Records Retention Schedule Versus Cultural And Historical Selection Criteria And The Role Of The Archives In The University, Ruth E. Bryan Oct 2018

Appraisal Of Faculty Personal Papers In American Public University Archives: The Public Records Retention Schedule Versus Cultural And Historical Selection Criteria And The Role Of The Archives In The University, Ruth E. Bryan

Library Presentations

In the United States, university archives are part of the university organizational structure. The archives can be formed strictly of permanent university records or can also include the personal papers of individuals related to the university, most often faculty, but also administrators and students/alumni. In addition, by law, the records produced by American public universities--including many of the personal papers acquired by public university archives--are also public records, which must be appraised using their specific state-mandated records retention schedule.

The main goal of the schedule is to manage the current and non-current records of the organization in order to mitigate …

“Eminently Combustible” -- Charles Williams, The Most Interesting Inkling, Clay Waters

SLIS Connecting

The English author and lay theologian Charles Williams was an idiosyncratic, intriguing, perhaps intimidating subject. He was born in St. Albans near London in September 1886 and died in Oxford in May 1945. In that relatively brief life, his prodigious literary output encompassed virtually every form imaginable (novels, poetry, theology, critical reviews, plays, masques, detective story reviews, even a single short story). Elizabeth Wright (1962) commented on his “versatility and quantity” when describing “the size and scope of his published writings... Writing as he did in almost every form, he nevertheless maintained a consistency of theme that makes his work …

Documenting The British East India Company And Their Involvement In The East Indian Slave Trade, Bonnie Pinkston

SLIS Connecting

The histories of the British East India Company, possessions, political influence, and economic ventures have shaped the dynamics of modern history. The enormity of the British East India Company (EIC) and other European trade companies’ impact on globalized world trade has been the subject of numerous studies. Yet, as many scholars have pointed out the topic has lacked proper attention regarding the Indian Ocean slave trade, particularly when it involved the transportation of people from nations other than from the continent of Africa. As Jayasuriya (2005, 2006) stated, “Africans were not the only people to be enslaved within the boundaries …

Through The Lens: World War I Photography As Historical Record, Kimberly Holifield

SLIS Connecting

Soldiers of the First World War viewed their experience not only through the lens that surrounds a colored iris but also through the lens of a camera. World War I marked the first time that the camera traveled with amateurs to war. Unencumbered by the assortment of nineteenth-century equipment necessary to develop a single photograph, soldiers of the new century used the camera to capture their personal view of war (Carmichael, 1989). Their pictures tell a story of comradeship, the daily drudgeries of duty, and sacrifice. Words convey thoughts and emotions. A photograph captures them for display.

Inhabitants of Great Britain have been brewing and drinking ale since the Bronze Ages. The province of Britannia and its capital Londinium were ruled by the Romans almost 2,000 years ago. Romans were great builders of roads that connected tabernae, which served food, wine, and local ale. These tabernae displayed vine leaves outside to advertise their trade.

After the Romans left, alehouses became common, as ale was safer than water, which was becoming increasingly polluted with an expanding Medieval population. In 1393, King Richard II ordered: "Whosoever shall brew ale in the town with intention of selling it must …

A Change Would Do You Good: Cross-Sector Perspectives, Rebecca Katz, Kayla Harris, Marcella Huggard

Marian Library Faculty Publications

The various sectors of archives and related professions can diverge from each other in priorities, strategies, constituencies, and resource availability. Individuals changing positions across these sectors have an opportunity to bring skills learned in their previous field(s) to transform the work being done in archives and related institutions. Cross-sector experiences also provide an opportunity to reflect on how such transitions transformed an individual’s outlook on the profession as a whole and his or her role within it. Even much of the recently renewed interest in the unity among libraries, archives, and museums (LAMs) focuses on institutions and not on the …

Foreword by Professor Suzanne J. Flynn

I have taught the first-year seminar, Shakespeare’s Sisters, several times, and over the years I have brought the seminar’s students to the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. There, the wonderful librarians have treated the students to a special exhibit of early women’s manuscripts and first editions, beginning with letters written by Elizabeth I and proceeding through important works by seventeen and eighteenth-century women authors such as Aemelia Lanyer, Anne Finch, Aphra Behn, and Mary Wollstonecraft. This year I worked with Carolyn Sautter, the Director of Special Collections and College Archives, to give my …
