Looking Forward To Look Back: Digital Preservation Planning, Jennifer Brancato, Kayla Harris
Looking Forward To Look Back: Digital Preservation Planning, Jennifer Brancato, Kayla Harris
Jennifer Brancato
Digital information resources are a vitally important and increasingly large component of academic libraries’ collection and preservation responsibilities. This includes content converted to and originating from digital form (born-digital). Preserving digital material, such as social media and websites, is essential for ensuring that future generations know everyone’s story, especially those groups which have been historically underrepresented in official records. This presentation will detail the steps undertaken by a digital preservation task force to first assess the weaknesses in current practice, and then develop a plan to implement a digital preservation policy and workflow. As part of the project, the task …

Reflections On Digitization, Outreach, And The Value Of Ephemera In Special Collections: A Case Study, Gregory K. Seppi
Reflections On Digitization, Outreach, And The Value Of Ephemera In Special Collections: A Case Study, Gregory K. Seppi
Journal of Western Archives
This case study describes the process L. Tom Perry Special Collections used to create and promote a digital collection of ephemera on Internet Archive. It follows the process from selection to uploading, discusses how decisions related to digitization were made, and how the collection was promoted following digitization. This paper establishes the value of digitizing ephemera related to topics known to be of interest to patrons and demonstrates one approach to special collections outreach. Data gathered during the creation of this case study demonstrates that even small efforts to promote digital collections can significantly improve usage of niche ephemera collections …

Escaping Into The Creative Imagination: A Case Study Of James J. Guthrie And The Pear Tree Press, Hayley Harlow
Escaping Into The Creative Imagination: A Case Study Of James J. Guthrie And The Pear Tree Press, Hayley Harlow
Special Collections Research Center Learning Lab Student Research
This paper focuses upon the collection of works by Scottish printmaker James J. Guthrie (1874-1952) housed in the University of Kentucky Libraries Special Collections Research Center. The collection includes numerous prints, drawings, and book plates from the Pear Tree Press, the private press Guthrie operated in England from 1899 until his death. My research will in part analyze the influence of the Romantic period in Guthrie’s work, particularly that of William Blake, as well as the connection between Guthrie’s own creative autonomy and the Romantic movement’s notion of poetic genius. It will examine this revival of Romantic poetry in …

Exploring Evolutionary Medicine Through 19Th Century Medical Collections: Applications In Archival Studies, Taylor Sturgill
Special Collections Research Center Learning Lab Student Research
Evolution has been a paradox in the field of science, but, the study of evolutionary medicine applies both the evolutionary game theory and medicine. This study was conducted to explore evolution by analyzing two 19th century collections of medical formulations and prescriptions while compared to the trend of public health and pathogenic mechanisms. Analysis of organic structure in historical prescriptions, descriptive epidemiology in Kentucky, and the idea of the germ theory will be used explicitly to show the evolutionary change of health and disease. Results of this study provided an outlook on ingredients that stimulate the body as a whole …
Personal Digital Archiving For Journalists: A “Private” Solution To A Public Problem, Rachel King
Personal Digital Archiving For Journalists: A “Private” Solution To A Public Problem, Rachel King
Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is to encourage librarians to teach digital archiving practices to journalists a) as a way of giving journalists the skills they need to save their work for future use and b) to facilitate the preservation of journalism for posterity. While personal digital archiving advocates have generally interpreted the word “personal” to be synonymous with “private,” this paper points to the need to expand the concept to include professional activities, particularly in light of the prevalence of telecommuting and freelance work arrangements, and the lack of support and training received by remote workers and independent contractors

Documenting Student Life: Using Omeka To Connect Students To The University Archives, Kayla Siddell
Documenting Student Life: Using Omeka To Connect Students To The University Archives, Kayla Siddell
Faculty and Staff Publications
Many institutional archives struggle to gain and maintain student participation in documenting the student experience. The history, images, and records of students and their various organizations are fundamental to the narrative of the university. Capturing the experiences of students and campus life is a difficult task as students create organizations, plan and attend events, and maintain a social media presence, all of which are rarely documented in university archives. At this institution, the Special Collections department wanted to increase students’ use of services and resources, and increase student donations to the archives to grow student-centered collections.
Puerto Rico’S Archival Traditions In A Colonial Context, Marisol Ramos, Joel A. Blanco
Puerto Rico’S Archival Traditions In A Colonial Context, Marisol Ramos, Joel A. Blanco
Published Works
This chapter examines the historical antecedents of recordkeeping and archives in Puerto Rico, during both Spanish and U.S. colonial rules. It also explores the history and current issues of the Archivo General de Puerto Rico (General Archive of Puerto Rico). This historical analysis is made within the context of colonialism, examining the effects of Puerto Rico’s colonial status (during the Spanish colonial period and the current period under United States colonial management) on the mission and work of the AGPR. We argue that while the Archivo General was created to address the chaotic management of government records, its founding reflected …

Preserving, Digitizing, And Sustaining The Weekly Challenger, A Local African-American Newspaper., Catherine A. Cardwell, Alexandra Curran
USF St. Petersburg campus Faculty Publications
A local newspaper in Saint Petersburg, Florida, The Weekly Challenger was established in 1967 with the goal of documenting and sharing information about the African-American community at a time when other local news outlets largely ignored it. Through a special legislative appropriation from the State of Florida, the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library at the University of South Florida Saint Petersburg received funding to preserve, digitize, and sustain the newspaper. In this article, the authors discuss the steps taken to build the repository for the newspaper’s print and electronic archives, including photographs and videotaped interviews with a long-time publisher. Collaboratively Creating A Programmatic Information Literacy Strategy: Challenges And Opportunities, Tom Adam, Colleen A. Burgess Ma Mlis, Kim Mcphee, Leanne Olson, Christy Sich
Western Libraries Publications
In 2017, a team of librarians and archivists at Western University developed local Information Literacy Learning Outcomes (ILLOs). The resulting document outlined the skills and understanding that Western University students should demonstrate at the end of a four-year undergraduate degree—specifically, the skills relating to accessing, assessing, and applying information. This article focuses on the challenges and opportunities encountered during the collaborative process as well as the approach employed by the team in the development of these ILLOs.
Six librarians and archivists in very different roles formed the project team. Despite coming from diverse backgrounds, the team recognized that there could …
“No Rhyme Or Reason:” Surveying Legislative Records Retention Practices In The U.S. House Of Representatives, Nahali R. Croft
“No Rhyme Or Reason:” Surveying Legislative Records Retention Practices In The U.S. House Of Representatives, Nahali R. Croft
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
Because the records of individual Members of the House of Representatives are considered personal property, what happens to those records once a Member leaves office is up to him or her. Legislative records, particularly files and reports used to develop policy and draft bills, have historical value and are one of the types of files most used in current Congressional collections, as they point toward legislative intent. The House Records Management Manual for Members suggests that offices permanently maintain these types of files. This study reveals to what extent House offices are preserving records that provide future researchers with legislative …
Recovering From Hurricane Sandy: A Municipal Government Archives Role In Disaster Recovery, Bryan J. Dickerson
Recovering From Hurricane Sandy: A Municipal Government Archives Role In Disaster Recovery, Bryan J. Dickerson
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy struck New Jersey with catastrophic results for many communities, including Brick Township. Located on the Atlantic Coast, Brick Township suffered damage to approximately 10,000 of its 26,000 residences from the hurricane. Nearly 500 of these homes were destroyed or required demolition afterwards. Since then, the Township of Brick Archives has been using its digitized Construction and Land Use records to support the community’s recovery from this devastating storm. When the Township implemented document digitization in 2006, disaster recovery was not its intended purpose. However, having these digitized records readily available has proven to be …

Journeywoman: A Lone Arranger On The Final Frontier, Laura Frizzell
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
The state of Alaska has no shortage of fascinating history and culture. What it does lack, however, is the presence of enough trained archivists to ensure the proper treatment and preservation of historic and cultural collections across the state’s numerous, albeit small, repositories. As such, the Alaska State Historic Records Advisory Board (ASHRAB) has developed the Journeyman Archival Processing Program, which provides an interested lone arranger the opportunity to work in an Alaska archives for six weeks. In May 2017, I ventured to the 49th State in this very capacity. In this paper, I detail my experience working as …
