Safeguarding For The Future: Managing Born-Digital Collections In Museums, Kimberly Kruse Dec 2017

Safeguarding For The Future: Managing Born-Digital Collections In Museums, Kimberly Kruse

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Over the past few decades, advancements in technology have changed society entirely. Every bit of information about world news, popular culture, and art is just a tap of a touchscreen away. So many aspects of the contemporary world have become digitized so that it was only a matter of time before museums would have to face the issue of born-digital media in their collections. From videos to web-based art, museums have to tackle how to save this new form of cultural heritage. Museums have to do so now before it gets lost forever. The challenge of born-digital objects lies in …

The Value And Problems Of Digital Preservation For Historical Documents In China, Yongsheng Chen, Huanning Su

Proceedings from the Document Academy

China has been taking on large-scale digitization of historical documents. This paper summarizes four advantages of the digital preservation of historical documents from the practice of Chinese archives. First, it is good for protecting the originals; second, it makes the historical documents more convenient to use; third, it lays a resource foundation for the construction of digital archives; last, it is beneficial for utilizing historical documents. This paper also points out problems in China's approach to the digital preservation of historical documents. First, it has been proceeding without a plan. Such a plan should be created by following the Value …

Ethical Issues In Digitization Of Cultural Heritage, Zinaida Manžuch Dec 2017

Ethical Issues In Digitization Of Cultural Heritage, Zinaida Manžuch

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

The growing number of case studies on the ethical issues faced in cultural heritage digitization calls for a discussion of this generally neglected dimension of digitization. The importance of the ethical dimension is also supported by implicit and explicit assumptions that well-established approaches to ethics in archives, libraries, and museums do not work with digitization. The aim of this paper is to determine what ethical issues arise in cultural heritage digitization and how they affect methods of decision-making and organizing digitization. The paper identifies and discusses several areas of concern that have caused ethical issues in digitization. They include contextual …

Our Digital Legacy: An Archival Perspective, Michael S. Moss, Tim J. Gollins Dec 2017

Our Digital Legacy: An Archival Perspective, Michael S. Moss, Tim J. Gollins

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Our digital memories are threatened by archival hubris, technical misdirection, and simplistic application of rules to protect privacy rights. The obsession with the technical challenge of digital preservation has blinded much of the archival community to the challenges, created by the digital transition, to the other core principles of archival science - namely, appraisal (what to keep), sensitivity review (identifying material that cannot yet be disclosed for ethical or legal reasons) and access. The essay will draw on the considerations of appraisal and sensitivity review to project a vision of some aspects of access to the Digital Archive. This essay …

Ethics In The Cloud, Corinne Rogers, Luciana Duranti Dec 2017

Ethics In The Cloud, Corinne Rogers, Luciana Duranti

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

For the past several decades, information communication technologies (ICTs) have been changing the way we create, share, and keep our records and data. How are we adapting? Today, individuals and organizations are increasingly creating, sharing, and storing information of all kinds in the cloud, some of them with the same expectations of privacy, access, intellectual rights, and control they have when storing it in in-house systems, either digital or analog. Such expectations provoke outrage when it is discovered that behavior in the cloud is not guided by long-established ethical rules guiding information creation, sharing, and use, but needs to be …

Do Archives Have A Future In The Digital Age?, Ivan Szekely Dec 2017

Do Archives Have A Future In The Digital Age?, Ivan Szekely

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

The rapid development of information and communication technologies pose significant challenges to archival theory and practice. The analysis of the dominant information operators of the archival institutions in the respective paradigms of archival history shows that today’s internet-based services can replicate all the main functions of the archival institutions, at least at the level of the fundamental information operators, on a mass scale. Despite these developments, the author argues that archives are under no direct threat of abolition or loss of function in the digital age, not only because of institutional inertia and traditions, but also their role in preserving …

Portraits, Preservation & Pedigrees: An Introduction To Photographic Portraiture, Photographs As A Means Of Genealogical Research, And A Preservation Case Study Of The Howard D. Beach Studio Collection Of Glass Plate Negatives, Kirsten Feigel

Museum Studies Theses

Photography is an established art form that combines the knowledge of chemistry, light, and optics to render an image. Initially, the image is captured on a flat surface coated with emulsion and combined with an exposure to sunlight or another illuminating source. Today, images are captured by digital methods. Artistically, the photograph may reveal sceneries of landscapes, of treasured belongings and of people, as they are seen to the human eye. Photographic portraiture is the oldest style of photography next to landscape imagery, due to commercial photographers setting up studios and experimenting with photography’s many cameras, plates, and emulsions. In …

Lois Lenski, A Friend To Children: An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of A Children's Book Author, Stephanie Evans Thomas

Master's Theses

In her lifetime, Lois Lenski wrote, illustrated, and otherwise contributed to more than one hundred books for children and preteens. This study focuses on Lenski’s regional books for preteens, novels that Lenski claimed were written from real life. Avoiding The Gambit For Our Personal Digital Archives, Matt Schultz

Matt Schultz

Personal content creation, collection, curation, and sharing are advancing into a new paradigm highly dependent on corporately controlled online platforms. Creators and cultural memory organizations are grappling with questions of ownership, control, and at-will sharing. This chapter explores curatorial strategies, advocacy efforts and grassroots initiatives that can serve as solutions.

State-It: Connecting Students To The Archives, Kayla Siddell, Katie Sutrina-Haney Nov 2017

State-It: Connecting Students To The Archives, Kayla Siddell, Katie Sutrina-Haney

Faculty and Staff Publications

The University Archives Department at Indiana State University (ISU) assists faculty, students, and the public by providing access to and preservation of primary resources and ISU history. Despite the resources and services available, archival holdings are often underused and receive few donations from students and student organizations. These students are often unaware of the function and uses of the archives. To address these concerns, Special Collections staff have created a website utilizing the Omeka platform called STATE-IT to engage students with the University Archives. This site houses digital archival materials, digital exhibits, and oral histories. STATE-IT also provides a quick …
