Western Libraries Publications

In doing so, each of the partner institutions demonstrates its commitment to the stewardship of print collections for future generations while repurposing valuable space on campus. This paper describes the background, rationale, challenges, and lessons learned for this unique Canadian project that leveraged funding from the province …

Special Collections and University Archives Finding Aids: All Items

For many years, the Temple Terrace Public Library maintained copies of the Temple Terrace Beacon. This local publication, first published in 1931, focused on news and events in the City of Temple Terrace as well as the surrounding University community. Kelsey Peduzzi, a librarian at the Temple Terrace Public Library, embarked on a project to scan and digitize issues of the newspaper in the library’s possession. After this successful project led to the creation of a digital archive of more than 800 issues of the newspaper on the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative’s digital collections webpage, the library decided that …

Altmetrics And Archives, Elizabeth Joan Kelly

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Altmetrics are an alternative to traditional measurement of the impact of published resources. While altmetrics are primarily used by researchers and institutions to measure the impact of scholarly publications online, they can also be used by archives to measure the impact of their diverse online holdings, including digitized and born-digital collections, digital exhibits, repository websites, and online finding aids. Furthermore, altmetrics may fill a need for user engagement assessments for cultural heritage organizations. This article introduces the concept of altmetrics for archives and discusses barriers to adoption, best practices for collection, and potential further areas of study.

Bioethics In The Work Of Ernest Everett Just: + Missing - Some 400 Pages, Theodore Walker Jan 2017

Bioethics In The Work Of Ernest Everett Just: + Missing - Some 400 Pages, Theodore Walker

Perkins Faculty Research and Special Events

Biology + ethics = bioethics. Here we see that Howard University biologist Ernest Everett Just (born 1883, died 1941) connected biology to ethics.

According to Just, various forms of specific biology (including especially cell biology) plus “general biology” are necessary for explaining adequately the origin of ethical behaviors. Social ethical behaviors, especially mutual aid and cooperative interactions with others and the environment, are essential to evolutionary advances among living creatures, ranging from humans to cells. Accordingly, theory of ethics (moral theory) should have roots in biology.

Also, Just wrote an unpublished book-length manuscript—“some 400 typed pages” (Just 1940)—on seeking the …
